I went to BB also. Maceo may have invited Prince, but there is no way he was going to play an aftershow to that corny ass crowd. Maceo was in fine form, along with the drummers. Rest of the band was struggling to keep up. The worst part was the crowd. While Maceo was jamming, people around me were dancing to some weird shit that was playing in their head biggrin

Official afterparty or else from now on. We deserve it, Prince!

you dont like hippes dancing

Love it. I just enjoy the beat. The beat, people. That's what you follow when you dance music

since Run & Them were saying "Here we go"

Gosh, I'm so disappointed I missed the 'after party' at the Darby (although, judging from various posts here and elsewhere, I can't tell if anyone actually got in). I wanted to give it a shot, too. Oh, well, it was my first time seeing him live, there'll be others.

Prince tipped off everybody at Madison Square Garden, including Madonna, Donald Trump, Jimmy Fallon and Leighton Meester, to a party after his concert Tuesday night. Before his last number, the rocker dismissed his backup vocalists and dancers from the stage, saying, "You all go to the after-party at The Darby. I'll handle this last song!" The Purple One eventually turned up at midnight at the hot spot packed with Jay-Z, Leonardo DiCaprio, Questlove, Mos Def and Casey Affleck. Prince played keyboard with his opening band, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, before he left at about 3:30 a.m.

Oh well, at least we "non celebrity" fans know not to worry our little heads about afterparties in NYC.

They're clearly not for us.

Another reason I'll probably skip these MSG concerts (the high price is the main one).

It's a pity real fans were left out waiting in the cold or sent on a wild goose chase to another club. When the "official after show/party" is announced for Feb. 7, I hope everyone remembers what happened on Jan 18th.

Isn't it possible some celebrities are "true fans" too? It's not an either/or.

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

YEs they/actors/celebrities are fans I am sure as well. It comes with the territory and they are in the business so to speak...Business of being private. One cannot blame them in a way for having closed parties...imagine your life under a microscope all the time and you just want to unwind and relax without being 'on' all the time...or have groupies chase you down for a photo or whatnot....

And actually one may be surprised a Band/Musician/Prince etc does not have control of all of these silly logistics. He is just going to the party..done..Maybe that is where his involvement ends...

Sure an afterparty with anyone allowed would be an added attraction but hey he gave us the shows we begged for and no matter what he does fans cannot be satified? Give him a break. Don't get me wrong I would love to go to one as well someday....for an experience....But I will not bash it or cry sour milk if I cannot get in..Just my 2 cents! ;0)

Prince was walking right behind me on his way to his SUV at Darby. I heard someone grunt and I turned around, but then he quickly glided right past me and he and two chicks (not the twins - a lot taller than him) sped off down 14th St.

he told the singers/dancers at the end of the concert something like, 'go on to the darby afterparty, i'll meet u there..'

so we find out this is a restaurant come club place round the corner & go join a small queue, lots of ducking & diving going on..

leonardo di cap arrives, jay z walks by.. i shout oi! kanye & get a few laffs..

prince arrives about 1ish..he's sat between the twins, he legs it in2 the venue giggling.. not b4 i fam out & tell him 'i love ya prince!!' lol

there was never more than about 30 fans in queue, renato pops out 4 a fag, puffing away outside, shelby comes outside briefly & liv warfield left after a short while escorted toyboy..the twins are back & forth.

only selected people going in, i'm not pushing/shoving, not my style. it was all about who u know. it was fun anyway. bitter sweet experience i guess. left the line at about 2am, could hear some music from inside, defo wasn't prince at that point.

i got a pic, not great but i'll post within next couple days

[Edited 1/22/11 3:42am]

here's some pics i got from outside the darby.. like i said b4, not a great pic of prince. i don't even remember what he wore, i just saw big smiles & a flash of shimmering gold flash b4 my eyes, i'm just gutted i wasn't quick enough to capture more of his loveliness lol

i will add that the bouncers did say there was no point in waiting, no chance of getting in, invite only.. but there was a slow trickle of people from the line getting in2 the venue, so there was a little bit of hope.

a group of vip ticket holders went in & then maybe another half dozen hopefuls in front of me blagged their way in

then someone called kara/ciara.. anyway one of p's dogbody came out & was obviously calling the shots.. she loved it too.

she promised 'i'll see what i can do'... i mean honestly, that was tres spineless! twat speak if i ever did hear it.

lots of ugly goons poking their spammy heads out of that place

by this time i was at front of the queue & then lost all hope when live nation promoters had problems getting entry lol

You do make a very good point. I guess I've never been one of those crazy fans that treat famous people like they're gods and drool all over them and beg for photos. Just fun to hang out with them and chat about our mutual interests. I forget that most fans are kind of nutty, so of course one would probably rather just relax and avoid all that.

In parties like that, you don't get a chance to "chat about mutual interests" because if you're not one of them, they don't feel they have any mutual interests with you. So you end up standing around looking at them sharing mutual interests with each other. shrug

Not trying to argue either. I just don't believe in the separation between people that is based on fame. Everyone has an important contribution to make to the world (well... not all of us, hah, but we all do something for someone), and I think that should be equally respected.

I don't believe in giving an artist millions of dollars and international acclaim to perform for a crowd of people (and I say this as a singer myself), when we give people who make important social and scientific contributions to make the world a better place so little. I'm not saying I don't respect certain musicians and what they do, I just think what they give needs to be put in the proper perspective.

Basically what I'm saying is, they're not better than I am just because more people know who they are and because they make more money than me. Therefore, I feel quite comfortable going up and saying hi to any of them. =)

I agree with you 10000000%. I do also think that alot of celebrities DO think they are better than some of us hence these kinds of parties where only other celebs are invited. But I do get that they don't want a bunch of crazy fans or even just fans in general oogling them and what not when they just wanna relax and be chill. Couple that with the fact that this was an after PARTY and not an after SHOW, I can see the need to keep things kinda intimate and as private and non fan-ny as possible. Although that night at VU was PACKED. It was the furthest thing from intimate that I could imagine.

I agree with that... because I feel the same way. To me, they're just people with different careers. It'd be great if people would scream and cry and chase me because they admire my teaching skills, but our society doesn't work like that. lol

The sad fact is that some of them DO think they're better than we are, and aren't interested in having us approach them.

Very true!

Good pictures. Funny if you glance quickly at the one pic of Prince it almost looks like the black SUV in the background is not there and he took the bus to his party..haha..smile
