I'm trying not to. I'm always trying not to.

So about 4-5yrs ago, I had Christmas fever. I had 2 trees, I had outside lights, Christmas was in every room of the house like when I was young. I was buying quality Christmas albums, going on ornament hunts. Man it was horribly wonderful. And I was looking for ways to draw it out. I did the 7 Fishes / 7 Kings celebration and I also make New Years more prominent. I had parties and gathers for the whole month. After I finally let it go(it seemed a lot of people were having a hard time letting it go that year. I was watching to see when other people in the neighborhood took down their trees and they just weren't lol. But when it was finally over, I told myself I need a fix until then. So I do the Patriotic months big, but I thought why not hook it up for the Harvest-Thanksgiving season. I bought some cool glass pumpkins and straw/wood/metal pumpkins and some cool decorations themed for Thanksgiving, and it is helping me keep Christmas at Bay.

But 2 week ago I did see a Christmas album by Eric Clapton and bought it.
And last weekend I saw a dark blue glass Christmas tree, I needed to go with a royal blue one I had.

So it is trickling in slowly lol

Yes - because I work in a company for which Christmas sales are make or break. It is CRAZY here from November 1 to December 21 (when the final orders go out), so I am always thrilled when Christmas gets here and things quiet down.

Plus, I love, love, LOVE classic Christmas movies. Going to try to see It's A Wonderful Life and White Christmas on the big screen this year - and watch googobs more on TCM.

This Christmas card by American illustator Saul Steinberg was first published in a book in 1951 (see The Story of the Christmas Card by George Buday, London: Oldhams, p. 43), but the design itself was likely created three years earlier, in color, when Saul Steinberg was commissioned to draw a ten-foot Christmas tree for the front hall of the Museum of Modern Art. From a press release sent by the MoMA on December 15, 1948:


Museum Exhibits Christmas Tree Drawn By Saul Steinberg―A ten-foot Christmas tree drawn and colored by Saul Steinberg, well-known cartoonist, is on view for the holiday season in the front hall of the Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53 Street. Since the Museum did not want a conventional Christmas tree, Mr. Steinberg was commissioned to draw his idea of one. The tree turned out to have a Santa CLaus head and feet, with birds and candles on his beard and a bell hanging from his cap. The branches of the tree are covered with toys and 60 varieties of Steinberg birds which he selected as his favorite from over 1,000 preliminary sketches. (PDF)

The design was most likely used the following year to create the much smaller drawing for a Christmas card sold by the museum. However, it was hardly the first collaboration between Steinberg and the MoMA. The celebrated illustrator had started designing Christmas cards for the museum as early as 1945. Joel Smith explains in Saul Steinberg: Illuminations:


When Steinberg began designing Christmas cards for The Museum of Modern Art in 1945, his inaugural effort featured Santa Claus riding a reindeer bareback amid a flurry of snowflakey abstractions. His line casually united contemporary high style and the popular cartoon ―a formula ideally suited to the wares of an institution trying to sell the American public on modernism― and he stuck with it in the cards he designed for MoMA and for Brentano’s Books through 1952. The formula had not been his invention, however. In 1944 while he was off at war, his friend Alexander Calder got the ball rolling with line illustrations for the nursery rhyme collection Three Young Rats, a collaboration with then MoMA curator James Johnson Sweeney.[…]

To this already engaging formula, Steinberg added a line as virtuosic as Calder’s was “primitive” and a mind bursting with unspent cartoon ideas. In cards for MoMA, his Santa went on to figure-skate, play the violin, surmount a monument, shake hands with his own double, and become one with the Yule tree. I've read that Christmas isn't as big a deal in the USA as it is in UK ... is that the case?

We weren't a well off family growing but my Mum somehow always found the money to make sure we had a great Christmas (though it was probably still frugal compared to other) ... and I use to love it!

Now I'm adult and much better off, its not the same. The treats we only had at Xmas we have all year so it doesn't feel as special. And as an adult the stuff you have to do, like naff office parties, pretending to get on with relatives you hardly ever see, etc make Xmas a bit of a chore. As a kid all you had to do was eat, open presents and play with toys.

people still have whole blocks of street homes decorated and lit. People go on drives through neighborhoods to look at the lights decorations. Lots of events centered around the holidays.

I hear you. I learned you have to really dedicate yourself to holding onto that 'magic' the innocence of the holidays. I see so many people get overrun by the overbloated expressions that numb people.

It's hard, but I try to stay away from foods that I enjoy for certain holidays and seasons whether it is the Memorial Day or the 4th of July / Summertime, Thanksgiving foods or Christmas

Even when it comes to office parties (looks like we are going to be forced to go to a new Bureau Christmas Party this year) I seek out people who are happy and enjoy the season.

Classic Christmas cartoons STILL lol, especially Charlie Browns(my brothers and I always call each other to remind each other when a cartoon is on tv) Christmas, cheesy Christmas movies, small gatherings for the month.. instead of putting everything on that 25th day. Sometimes I do a Cmas eve party

I'm not the least bit religious, but this is one amazing church. So beautiful. Not really looking forward to christmas, but it's always nice to see friends and family.
