Euro 2016

I'm surprised nobody has made a thread about this already so I thought I'd do it. I know this tournament probably won't mean much to the non Europeans of the org but the NFL ones don't mean much to the non Americans so let's see how it goes wink

So, as some of you may or may not know, I'm Irish and I will of course be supporting Ireland in Euro 2016. Obviously, we have no hope of winning (I seriously doubt we'll pick up a single point) but it's rare for Ireland to even qualify for these things so as long as the players don't embarrass themselves, it'll be drinks all 'round (though not for me, I don't drink)

Germany is who I'm predicting to win, though if it won't be Ireland (and it WON'T be Ireland) I'd like to see England or Wales go all the way.

Can't wait! I'm rooting for Germany, as my son blogs about Bayern Munich and hosts a podcast about them.

I love the Euro tournament. It's awesome, I wish that more Americans tuned in. But what I love almost as much as the Euro are the Heineken commercials! They're always the coolest!

LOL. Every time I'm abroad and it comes up that I don't drink people are like "I thought you were Irish?". In truth, I haven't noticed Ireland being any different to any other country I've been to when it comes to alcohol consumption. Its just one of those stereotypes like how English people like tea, Americans are stupid and Germans have no sense of humour. None of those stereotypes have been proven true in my experience but it is what it is.

But stereotypes and their negative implications are a thread for another day. wink

You mean the team Ireland beat the last time they played?

To misquote Eamon Dunphy, there are no world class players any more, every team is capable of being the best.

I don't really expect Ireland do very well either, but then I didn't expect Brazil to be embarrassed by Germany the way they were in Rio, I didn't expect England to go out so early, I didn't expect so many supposedly good teams to be so ordinary, and I certainly didn't expect the world champions to be beaten by Ireland a few months later (albeit in relatively unimportant game to them), so if Germany get trounced and an unexpected team get to the semis or the final, I won't be too surprised.

The reason I think Germany will win is based on the process of elimination. Spain aren't as good as they were and they're missing Costa. Torres, Mata etc. So they won't win. I remember growing up in the 90's, Italy was always regarded as among the favourites for the Euro's and world cups but you don't hear so much about them anymore. Now, I don't follow club football so maybe Italy still have great players at Juventus, Inter, Roma etc but they're not tye same level they were. Portugal are a team based around one player, same with Sweden. England will probably go out on penalties and after watching France last night, they don't stand a chance. That only leaves Germany. I know we beat them but like you say that game was a nothing game for them. When it matters, they'll win.

The Dutch ain't playin' this year.

So, I met with my friends with whom I normally watch the Euro. I decided to back up Emma and cheer for Ireland. And when Iceland plays, I'm for Iceland.

Another friend is for Wales.

The other two were undecided.

There has been a tv show over here, figuring out what country we have to cheer for. I think it was Belgium. But I, and many other Dutchies, automatically cheer for Belgium. Being it football, Eurovision song festival or when they have no government.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Can't say I've been following Euro 2016 yet; I've got my own thing going on with Copa America right here in the good ol' USA. flag woot! The media is still trying to get Americans excited about the possibility of us advancing to the quaterfinals tonight with a win or draw against Paraguay, but frankly we aren't all that good. We looked good against Costa Rica, but Colombia kicked our ass earlier, and how are we going to advance past them, Mexico, or god forbid Lionel Messi and Argentina? We could possibly squeak by Brazil, but that's only because Neymar isn't playing in this tournament.

Now that is interesting. Why Turkey and Northern Ireland?

(I´m Turkish, by the way. But....I couldn´t care less about the Euro 2016 or soccer in general lol).

If I recall correctly, you wanted to travel to Istanbul a few years ago, right?

That´s one of the main reasons why I never really got into that sport. The fanatics, the hooligans, the nationalism, all the ugliness outside the arena.

During my teenage years, basketball was the polar opposite of that.

Welldressed coaches in suits, wellbehaved players (well, at least up until the early 90s), and wellbehaved fans who just enjoyed their sport.

What these fanatics are trying to achieve ....acting like that....is totally beyond my comprehension.

I'm not a huge sports fan, so when I root for a national team, it's usually due to some sociopolitical affinity. I'll leave it at that. wink

And, yes, I did mention an intent to travel to Istanbul, though more recently than you recall. I visited both Turkey and Italy in January. Awesome excursion.

Yeah the hooliganism is crazy. I dont follow soccer but will usually watch a few games of the euros. Its nice to see the atmosphere at these tournaments when its a colorful, goodnatured and celebratory coming together of peoples from different countries, but the violence that emerges from certain fan(atics) is beyond comprehension.

It's about time FIFA banned England from international competition until they sort out the hooligan element of their support. This kind of violence happens at every single tournament they play in. Enough is enough.
