Do Movies Really Make You Cry?

It's a romantic idea to cry at a movie evoking enough emotion that you weep during the movie at some point, but how realistic is it?

I ask because I DVR'd The Reader and watched it last night. I wasn't sure what it was about, or what to expect. For some reason, it got me emotional. It was such a great movie. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I'd highly recommend it.

Do you cry at a movie? What movie(s) have evoked that kind of emotion from you?

I haven't had a movie that made me cry in a while, but there are some that get me over and over. Forrest Gump usually does it. So does The Color Purple.

The beginning of Up caught me by surprise though

I cry at movies, tv, books, music, all of it. The mere thought of a song can start the tears rolling down my face.

Any kind of overwhelming emotion is going to come out of my eyes. Happy, sad, whatever. I’m a sensitive soul, I guess. That and I’m often hormonal. I take after my mom this way.

you big sob!

The older I get, the easier it gets to start bawling. From movies (Amadeus gets me e-ve-ry time) or music (The Beatles' Free As A Bird) or a fucking Oprah episode, it don't matter. Imma big bawler.

I totally agree about The Reader. I went to see it with two of my friends and afterwards we just went to a bar, sat down and stared into nowhere. And we are a group of people that are hardly ever speechless when together! Besides, I had read the book previously which also got me quite emotional.

Good Will Hunting, Ray, The Green Mile, Life is Beautiful ... these come to my mind.

I cry at movies all the time. shrug

The most recent film that turned me into a puddle was I've Loved You So Long. I also pretty much lost it on The Lives of Others.

I cry ~ release emotion ( not all emotion is sad ) ... whenever, wherever, as often as it comes up

I love that about myself and I do not really care what anyone else thinks about it

It's an important part of who I am and I adore that about myself

redface These aren't "normal," I'm afraid, but...

X-Men 2, Mutants United - That opening scene is a visual SYMPHONY! bawl
Carrie - Why'd she have to burn? All she wanted was a little respect. bawl
Fright Night, where the character Evil Ed dies - Why'd he have to get impaled? All he wanted was a little respect. bawl
The Wolfman (1941), where the werewolf gets bludgeoned with a silver cane - But he was... hairy chested!! bawl
Some forgettable yeti movie where he gets impaled by a ski -- But... but.. y'all invaded his turf... AND he was hairy chested! bawl

The Reader is a great movie! I recommend it as well but it did not make me cry. Movies that I have recently watched that made me cry were "Precious" and "Why did I get Married"

Usually old movies, rather than newer movies.

I get ugly, crying over these movies:

Dark Victory
Imitation Of Life
The English Patient

Just the opening titles of Imitation Of Life gets me choked, because I know what's coming.

And I couldn't watch the last 30 minutes of Marley & Me - I had to leave the room.

It made me cry in anger. Seriously I had seen some commercials and it came off as a Narnia like fantasy type of movie which I thought would be a fun lil romp. Boy was I wrong. sad

In general No though, I tend to stay away from the depressing movies cause I spend money to be entertained and have a good time.

I read the book as a young boy and it was the only book about humans that made me sob like a baby - I remember going upstairs to dinner and just bursting out crying in front of everybody - the film was a bit of a disappointment but it pushed an old button.
