Alrighty then, I'll make an effort just for your lovely self. Here's some stuff I like that I believe haven't been mentioned yet... I'm in a Cary Grant kind of mood today: His Girl Friday Notorious (Best Hitchcock EVER, and I loved this outfit she's wearing) The Philadelphia Story That said, I'm looking for a decent still from "The Magnificent Ambersons." Another great Welles I haven't seen in many a moon... I could spend my entire day posting on this thread... just think of all the great Bergmans, Hepburns, Garbos, Hayworths, Davises...etc etc... Oh but the mind boggles... THAT is why I should not even start!

I mentioned Notorious very early on--just didn't post a pic for it. You forgot a HUGE Grant film, some would say his best: [i] Bringing Up Baby

Cary Grant is one of my favorite actors. I don`t think he was the most talented (and i can`t stand his voice), but he had that extra something, and i like many of his movies, like "The bishops`s wife", "Bringing up baby" and the charming "Topper"

It's so boring when people try to be all natural and realistic. For that, I don't need to see a movie!

StoneCrib said: Lammastide said: Why did I list Griffith's Birth of a Nation? Well...
I didn't list it because I thought it was fun or comfortable. The movie's historical bias is absolutely revolting. BUT, as art goes, that movie changed the entire paradigm of the motion picture. I'll defer to heartbeocean's link to get into details, but that film changed everything! It showed the world, perhaps for the first time, the immense power that cinema can have not only in the movie-going world, but over the psyche of its audiences and in the overarching culture altogether. And thanks, heartbeatocean for reminding us of Riefenstahl's later and terrifying Triumph of the Will, which I'd also place among my favorites, in the same vein. ...As for Intolerance, also by Griffith: No, it definitely wasn't an apology for BOAN. In fact, as I recall, it made no reference to the American Negro at all, which is amazingly ironic given the human message of the film. Again, though, the sheer cinematic innovation of that film -- and it's enormous scale (Just look at how HUGE Griffith's images of ancient Babylon are!! And remember this was in 1916!!) -- cements its place in world cinematic history, let alone my personal appreciation. [Edited 4/2/06 19:15pm] I'm not surprised to read immature comments like that, especially from the org, because there are some people who will never know what it's like to be the victim of racism so they truly don't care who they offend. it's already been commented that the blatant sexist and exploitive avatar you have is offensive, but you don't seem to care. It's so boring when people try to be all natural and realistic. For that, I don't need to see a movie! He was also a kingsmaker. Countless people won Oscars acting alongside him because he made everyone better. The tragedy was that his only Oscar was a life-time achievement award. And one of my favorite Cary Grant films(I am a big fan): The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer Shirley Temple is really cute in this. Cary Grant is this awesome artist and Temple is a high school girl who crushes on him big-time. Her mom's a real ball-buster(she's a judge) and to get back at her, he basically starts dating Temple. Really funny. I've never seen any of her goodship lollipop-type movies. She must've stopped acting pretty soon after this film, because she's damn good and I've never seen her in a film in which she's older than this(15 or 16, I'm guessing).

u2prnce approved Cary Grant films (that haven't been mentioned yet):
Every Girl Should be Married Incredibly sexist--although probably considered somewhat progressive at the time--but also pretty damn funny. An ordinary girl tries to corral Grant's pediatrician(who says he doesn't like children) into marriage. I liked the twist on Grant's caddish role. And I love the way the lead girl speaks in this, it's very mannered, so it's a battle of stitled vocal techniques. Mr. Lucky Grant plays a criminal who tries to turn a WWII fundraising organization into another racquet. This is actually kind of a dramedy. With an outstanding ending, which I will absolutely not ruin. People Will Talk Very progressive film about a gynecologist who falls in love with a young unwed woman who is his patient. An unusual film in Grant's oeuvre(for its tone) and all the more remarkable for it. Monkey Business A screwball comedy. Very much a 50s sensibility with Grant playing a scientist who invents a serum which regresses those who imbibe it with a teenager's mentality. Also features a young Marilyn Monroe. *sigh* She just plays a supporting role here--Ginger Rogers plays Grant's wife. I wish Cary and Marilyn has made more than one one film together. Although, if you count Tony Curtis' Grant impression in Some Like it Hot, they made two films!

I think I saw it on AMC once.Just rent or buy it, I highly recommend it.This is the only film that British actor Charles Laughton directed, a classic American Gothic film. I think of it as a precursor to Blue Velvet because of the surreal imagery, Shelly Winters' corpse's hair floating in the water, the children's escape down the river , these images stay with you, but it's Robert Mitchem acting that's the best part of the movie, imo.

It's hilarious at how people can say my avatar is offensive yet NO ONE has stepped forward to tell me who is in my avie and what's offensive about it? Hmm? A model in lingerie...yeah, that's offensive. So since you chimed in for no apparent reason whatsoever, do YOU care to take a shot at who's the woman in my avatar, sunshine? I din't think so. The arrogance of the org is always a great laugh for the day. People think they rule the world by being a member of a message board. Go figure.
