Madonna's Secret Garden: A discussion of her unreleased recordings

Recently, there was a thread devoted to Michael Jackson's unreleased recordings.Another discussion focused on unreleased songs by Stevie Wonder.I love discussing outtakes, alternate versions and other stuff that remains in the vaults. So,this week, let's discuss Madonna and her many unreleased songs.Since there are many other knowledgable,well-informed Madonna fans here,I'm sure you guys will correct me when I'm wrong and provide any additional info that you may have.I'll start with a long list of all the songs, then follow up with more details in each subsequent post.Okay, here we go...

A few more tidbits of information...

***This has never been confirmed, but supposedly,in 1995,Madonna and Prince recorded two duets---"Mad" and "Funk Of A Thousand Years"---for the 'From Dusk Til Dawn' movie soundtrack.Since nobody has ever heard these songs,I was reluctant to add them to my list.Could just be a rumor.

***Originally, the 'Ray Of Light' album was gonna be titled 'Mantra' or 'Sutra'.

***"Cyberraga" (the B-side of the "Music" single) was originally titled "Cyber Sadhu".

***"Intervention" was originally recorded for the 'Music' album. This song is considered a "Little Star" for her son Rocco...lol...but originally, the lyrics were about her husband Guy Ritchie.

***"X-Static Process" was originally a fast,techno-style dance track, not unlike "Impressive Instant".

***Contrary to rumor,"Can't You See My Mind" is NOT an early version of "Die Another Day".It's a completely different song.It is copyrighted so it really exists. It's a ballad that was *probably* submitted as the James Bond theme (which is why it's always linked with the "Die Another Day" theme song).

So,these Madonna/Prince duets really exist? Thanks for the info.

Btw,is it the same "Mad" that we know so well? There is a version from 1994 recorded by the NPG with Sonny T. on lead vocals.

also, you've got things like "Jitterbug" listed on there, but all this is is footage shot for A League Of Their Own where Madonna's dancing the jitterbug.

Are these songs actually in circulation, or are they just collected from articles/interviews etc. where someone has mentioned them?

There was also supposed to be 2 new songs for her GHV2 album... one of 'em was called "Veronica Electronica" (or so the article said) and was reported to be a ROL outtake.

Veronica Electronica and Sex Makes The World Go Round.

which, until they resurfaced as rumors for GHV2, both of these track titles were denounced as part of a fake tracklisting for ROL, even before it came out.

Oh yeah? I never heard that this was just a rumour... It sounded sorta official at the time. Sex Makes The World go Round was the other song listed in the article... if u remembered that Aaron... good memory! I've smoked too much crack in my day to remember.

Hmmm, interesting. I never knew she'd have so many unreleased stuff.

One that stands out is "By Alien Means" (1988) written and produced by PRINCE , what's this one like? I never heard about this one.

Must have been done around the time of Love Song, may have that bad ass Camille sound...!

Anyone want to describe it or something?

And funny but a while back, I think before the internet, I heard about Funk Of A THousand Years...and I thought, man, that must be an awesome song! But never heard from that until this thread, weird.

Funk Of A Thousand Years is one of the supposed Madonna/Prince tracks that was going to be in From Dusk Til Dawn. It wasn't. It was confirmed false by PP employees, as a joke that another PP employee had started in Prince circles. I had passed this tidbit on to the madonnacatalog site, and it was included there for years (it may still be) until I corrected it.

By Alien Means is a Prince track from around 1988/1989, and he supposedly gave it to her after seeing her Blond Ambition show in 1990. I believe, at the time, it was either going to be a one-off single (or various artists compiliation track). The rumor of it resurfaced again for the Erotica album.

From what I've gathered, no Prince fan or Madonna fan has ever heard the song, in any form (as either a Prince or Madonna outtake).

Sadly, most of these songs are NOT in circulation.I was hoping that the upcoming box set would include some of this stuff, but it doesn't seem likely. In recent years, though, the 'ROL' outtakes began circulating.

"Veronica Electronica" was the title of a proposed 'Ray Of Light' remix album that Madonna herself mentioned in a Billboard interview in 1998.I don't know if there was ever a song with that title.

Aaron,do you know of any other rumored Prince/Madonna collaborations ? When I was doing my "research",there was a mention of several songs with Prince, but the titles weren't known. What I do know is,several years ago,Madonna herself metioned in an interview that a future box set may include some unreleased tracks with Prince.Since the 'From Dusk Til Dawn' songs may not really exist,I'm now dying to know exactly what Maddy was referring to.

So far,the only circulating Madonna/Prince track is an alternate version of "Love Song".

There is a fan/collector who actually went to the Library of Commerce (or something like that...lol) and sat down and listened to a bunch of copyrighted songs, including "By Alien Means".He heard the Prince version of the song and there was no Madonna involvement whatsover. He didn't think much of the song.Don't know if his story is true, but it's been told repeatedly.

Love Song and the previously discussed By Alien Means are the only ones that I know of.

The others that have been mentioned without titles, are probably reference to the Dusk Til Dawn things, or Alien Means, with spotty info.

Sasha is a DJ/producer. he's done remixes for Ray Of Light and (with BT) Drowned World.

also, there were several 1997 outtakes with Babyface, intended for her next project (possibly what became ROL, or a soundtrack) that were shelved with titles unknown.

"Laugh To Keep from Crying" (1980)
"Crimes Of Passion" (1980)
"Ain't No Big Deal"(1982) demo version
'Stay" (1982) demo version

released on Pre-Madonna (and In The Beginning)

"Shake Your Head"(1982)

i believe it's actually "Bang Your Head (Let's Go To Bed)" and it was with Ozzy Osbourne. i *believe* this came out as a duet between Ozzy and someone like Lita Ford, but i'm not sure.

"Sidewalk Talk" (1983) demo version

turned up later as a Jellybean track, with Madonna and Catherine Buchanan on vocals

"Desperately Seeking Susan" (1984) unreleased song recorded for the movie of the same name

false. this refers only to Into The Groove. and even incorrectly at that, as she had written the song for another singer (with the title of "Get Into The Groove") before she was going to use it as her own.

"Warning Signs" (1984) recorded for the 'Vision Quest' soundtrack

and another song "Lies In Your Eyes". both have been available on bootlegs, though one of them sounds to have another singer doing lead vocals.

"Spotlight" demo (1987)

actually, this is from 1986. it was a True Blue outtake that got remixed by Jellybean for YCD.

"By Alien Means" (1988) written and produced by PRINCE

Madonna's version is post-1990, though. the story that goes along with it is that he gave it to her after seeing Blond Ambition.

"Love Song" with Prince (demo) (1988)

i imagine that the demo refers to whatever tape Prince gave her to work on initially. they traded it back and forth over the months, until it was complete. there probably isn't an actual "demo" of them doing it together, as they never worked on it in the studio together.

"Possessive Love" (1988) offered to Marilynn Martin

released, i believe.

"Dog House" (1989) outtake from 'I'm Breathless' project

was inspired by Brenda Lee's track from the *other* Dick Tracy soundtrack that was out at the time. "You're In The Dog House" it was called, i think.

"Vogue" (1989) demo contains controversial lyrics

has a "doesn't matter if you're straight or gay" instead of "black or white"

"Dick Tracy" (1989) outtake from 'I'm Breathless' project

don't know about this. she does sing a completely different, Stephen Sondheim version of "Back In Business" in the film, though.

"Get Over" (1991) offered to Nick Scotti

and released by him, also.

"Erotica" demo (1992) has a darker S&M theme than the released version

most likely the one with alternate lyrics that came with the Sex book.

"Goodbye To Innocence" (1992)

released on "Just Say Roe" .. and turned up as a b-side for Secret in Mexico, i think. is the basis for "Up Down Suite"

"Queens Pearls" (1992)

is this the Jose & Luis track? or was that "Queen's English". or something like that. i have a remix of their song that she gave them on some rare Maverick promo sampler, that has background vocals by Madonna.

"These Boots Are Made For Walking" (1992)

don't believe this was ever recorded. it was intended for 1993, and she had a whole campaign planned around it, but Billy Ray Cyrus came out with his version just as she was getting ready to do it. she was extremely pissed and scrapped the whole thing.

"This Used To Be My Playground" demo (1992)

there's also the movie version, approx. 7 minutes long. the instrumental of the movie version showed up on the import CD single, but alas, the beautiful full length vocal version has never been released.

"Jitterbug" (1992)

refers only to her scene dancing the jitterbug in A League Of Their Own

"Just A Dream" (1993)

given to Donna Deloray, I believe. and released. I believe.

""I'd Ratha Be Yo' Lover" (1994) an alternate version of "I'd Rather Be Your Lover" features a rap by Tupac Shakur

some say this is a fake.

"Love Won't Wait" (1994)

given to, and released by, Gary Barlow.

"Freedom"(1994)

on the Carnival! various artists album.

"Something's Coming Over Me" (1994) early version of "Secret"

the original version she wrote with Shep Pettibone, i imagine.

"I Want You" remix (1997) unrleased remix by Junior Vasquez

but very very easy to find, in both full length and edit form on any filesharing service.

"Love Won't Wait (remix) (1997)

i think it's a remix of the Gary Barlow version.

"To Have And Not To Hold" remix by Goldie (1998)

seriously doubt that. he was one of those pricks going around in 1998 telling anybody who'd listen that he'd turned her down to work on the album or remixes.

there is, however a track that she did with... ummm... what was his name. Robert Miles? he did that track "Children" in approx. 1996. Sky Fits Heaven sounds a lot like it.

"Can't You See My Mind" (2002)

this is a completely different song. one in her stable of remix DJ's (i forget who, probably Rauhofer or Calderone) mentioned that he was doing a remix for this song. and that it wasn't Die Another Day

"Forbidden Fruit" (2002) offered to Jessica Simpson

and to be released on her forthcoming album.

also, there's that track she gave to Kylie for a b-side that never did turn up. forget the title though.

RUMORED SESSIONS with SASHA (not sure exactly who "Sasha" is,but reportedly Madonna recorded a bunch of songs with him, probably for the 'American Life' album)

Sasha is a DJ/producer. he's done remixes for Ray Of Light and (with BT) Drowned World.

also, there were several 1997 outtakes with Babyface, intended for her next project (possibly what became ROL, or a soundtrack) that were shelved with titles unknown.

That's correct. One of these Madonna/Babyface tunes is called "Never Trust A Stranger" and it is said to be in the style of "Take A Bow".When Madonna didn't use it for her own album, there were rumors that Babyface was gonna add it to his own album, but that never happened.

And funny but a while back, I think before the internet, I heard about Funk Of A THousand Years...and I thought, man, that must be an awesome song! But never heard from that until this thread, weird.

I first heard about "Funk Of A Thousand Years" and "Mad" in a 1995 issue of The Prince Family newsletter, reported by Diana Dawkins.I remember getting really excited about it,but when the 'From Dusk Til Dawn' soundtrack came out in early 1996,the rumored Prince/Madonna duets were nowhere to be found.Since these songs are not circulating,I have my doubts about whether they really exist.
