Its hard for me to take some of these lists seriously.... some of yall have Whitney, Bill Withers, MJ on the list but no mention of Beyonce, Bieber, Perry or Drake??? Silly lists.

I mentioned all of those except Drake, mainly as I have never heard any of drake's material.

.

I would never mention Michael Jackson, as he is my favourite artist after Prince. Anyone who would needs their head read, MJ is incredible, he is a legend. Whitney is great too and I like the few Bill Withers songs I have heard. Don't worry man, plenty of us here know who is hot and who is not!

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I actually think a lot of people tend to underrate Michael Jackson because he was so famous so they tend to see him as more of a celebrity than anything else. But if you set that side of him apart and just look at his music and performances, the man was a one off.

How is Bill Withers even in contention for being one of the most overrated acts of the 1970's? hmm

The Jackson 5 and tHe jacksons as famous as they were in the 70's were at the same time quite underrated, just listen to their best album Destiny, that album is one of the best albums in Michael Jackson's carreer. Listen those beautiful ballads in the album, please go and listen and tell me...

AGREE. The Jacksons disography is extremely underrated. Triumph and Destiny are R&B classics. I personally think Triumph is their best but I love all of their albums actually.

I agree. Michael is actually very underrated in some ways. For example, he is underrated as a songwriter and wrote most of his music and hits himself. He is also underrated as a singer. His creativity as a dancer and entertainer tends to over shadow his other talents. Very gifted man and one of a kind for sure! I can talk for days about how amazing he is lol

For me Destiny is much better than Triumph. just the ballads alone outshine everything in Triumph.

He was talented, his songs just put me to sleep. I do have a bias towards female singers, not really into men-loving-women songs unless they are by Prince, Stevie, Sam Cooke, Louis Armstrong, Luther Vandross or Nat King Cole (may be forgetting a couple but not many).

He's only known for 2-3 songs though. He's hardly overrated considering those songs are bigger than he is himself.

To me most of Queen's hits sound like novelty songs. Freddie was charismatic and they are talented musicians, but that's about it. And Jackson was talented as well, but nowhere near as talented as Stevie Wonder, Prince, Marvin Gaye and plenty of other acts who have not sold 300 million records, which to me makes him the most overrated artist ever.

Well, it depends on what you understand for 'overrated'. I don't think Bieber or Perry are widely regarded as 'great artists'. They may be very successful right now but apart from teenage girls no one would include them on any lists of 'best artists ever'. In that sense you could say Beyoncé is overrated, as she is a lot more 'respected' than the other two that you mention (I'm avoiding Drake as I really know nothing about him).
That's why I find Michael Jackson the most overrated artist. If you ask people in the street who the best five artists of all time are, probably half or more of them wil say Jackson and, in my opinion, that's just not the case. Thriller and Off the Wall are amazing albums, but he could have never made Parade.

What do you mean in a sense? The girl is overrated as hell. Thats not even debatable. She has more grammys than MJ AND Prince as well as a number of undeserving accolades. If anybody is the most overrated "artist" its definitly her. I find it comical that this site finds any illogical reason to hate on MJ even when there is no rational to support it.

We are agreeing on Beyoncé, I really don't care about her. What I tried to say (and apparently failed to get the message across) is that she fits the 'overrated' label.
Also, assuming you were talking about what I wrote, I don't know where you got the idea that I 'hate' Michael Jackson or what was illogical about what my post. I simply consider him overrated because his talent (which I don't deny) did not justify, in my opinion, the level of popularity and success he achieved.

Well they're from different decades doncha know? There are significantly worse very popular artists today than Beysus, Bieber and Katy. They have a few decent tracks after all.

In your opinion Prince is more talented than him but I respectfully disagree and IMO Michael was way more talented in certain areas than Prince. They were two different styles of artists, why even compare? Don't even know why you compared Stevie or Marvin as well.

I gave you a number of artist which I consider more talented than Michael Jackson but are not as popular to justify why I believe he is the most overrated artist ever. It is quite a linear argument: I expressed an opinion and justified it with examples. You respectfully disagree and that's fine, but that doesn't make my reasoning comical or illogical, and it doesn't show that I hate Michael Jackson.

Chill out! This is a thread asking people's opinions - which will never all be entirely the same. I'm shocked people have said Queen but I'm not going to argue - it's their opinion. That's all. Nothing to take personally.

Okay....I'm going to say (in no particular order):

The Beatles

Led Zepplin

Stock, Aitkin & Waterman (okay not a group but everything put out by them was overrated IMO).

Iron Maiden

The Spice Girls

Celine Dion (though I do like her cover of river deep, mountain high)

Adele

He's only known for 2-3 songs though. He's hardly overrated considering those songs are bigger than he is himself.

One of my favourites, is "Just the two of us", it's credited to Grover Washington Jr., but its Bill on the vocals and wow those vocals give me chills and definitely would not put anyone to sleep. Will Smith's version maybe, but not Bill and Grover.

.

Thinking about it too, some overrated acts are all these goth alternative acts like the following (Waiting for the hatalanche) I like some of their songs, but they are gardly revolutionary and ground breaking. I think people just like them as they are 'different' and not really into commercial chart music (Not a bad thing at the end of the day).

. Tori Amos (I get it, as a gay man I am supposed to like her, okay I loved Crucify, but the rest is wtf?)

. The Cure (Just don't get it), Inbetween days is okay I guess, but the rest?

. Depeche Mode - another group I don't get.

. PJ Harvey - don't get it

. Fiona Apple - don't get it

. The Cult - snnooorrreeee!!!!

. The Smiths/ Morrisey - Overrated pablum that the music journos - particuylarly British worship at the altar of, okay the lead singer is gay and depressing, how about a lead singer who is gay and positive, but not a screaming queen too?

.

Over and out, my two cents.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Lol I am not taking it personally. I just don't "get" how you can find Michael Jackson, Bill Withers and Queen more overrated than Beyonce, and a couple others. I am entitled to that opinion as well. I think its comical actually lol To me it just seems people are pointing out acts they don't like versus acts they find overrated. There are some acts that I don't care for but I know in the bigger scheme of things they are not overrated as far as their contributions to music.

I am not sure why people get so defensive about the major names being mentioned as over.rated. If you like u2, rsdiohead, MJ, or any of the top tier of artists but really don't think they are as great as their reputation, then they fit the over- rated criteria. It doesn't mean you hate the artist or think they are necessarily untalented. It is hard to view the minor names as over rated becausethey are already not that respected.

MJ could never make a track like Batdance but that's not why people praise him: it's because he's the greatest entertainer of all time and also the most unique. Key-word: entertainer.

And, BTW, you're a typical Prince fan in the sense you're jealous MJ became way more notorious than him.

I can't take away your opinion that MJ is overrated and to an extent, I agree but I don't agree with him not being as talented as the people you mentioned when he was a different type of artist than them and had a different skill set in which case he was better than them in certain areas. They were also better than him in certain areas as well.
