It's true depending on who does the praising but at the same, Prince and MJ are far more deserving of the praise they are showered with than any top star now.

Yeah,that's true.

It's GREAT fun! This thread is just an excuse for folks to hate on acts they don't like. "Overrated" is simply another way of saying "I don't like this artist and I don't understand why everyone else does". I knew some idiot would put Dylan in the list and before you know it, another idiot will put The Beatles in there, so thank you, 214, for providing some comic relief! biggrin [Edited 8/19/16 8:48am]

That's true, is just a mtter of taste but yes, there are some parameters to rank music. I'm just saying that we overrate every artist we like and i think that's true, in some sense; all things i've read here about Prince's talent i've read everywhere else about any other artist out there.

Lean on Me and Ain't No Sunshine are two of the most boring hits ever.

The only version of ain't no sunshine I can listen to is Michael Jackson's cover.

1950s- Elvis. Only in America can this musical act be considered great. Here's a guy who never wrote a word for a song. A guy who can't play an instrument (the guitar was just a prop). A guy who never came up with a single idea for a song. A guy whose only musical attribute was his voice. Sure, he was charismatic but that's it. Yet he is venerated in the US. The rest of the world can't understand why.

American society is very different to Europe's. In America people like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian are venerated. If the Kardashian girl does a photoshoot showing her ass, it's news for a week and that's all talk show hosts and the entertainment written industry talk about. If Paris Hilton is seen wearing a certain shirt, said shirt will sell onehundredfold. Jay-Z, a guy who dresses like a gangster and raps about bitches and drugs, is looked upon as a staple in the American music industry. Biggie and Tupac, or whatever their names are, are seen as gods and figures of American folk. Europeans are mystified by all of this. The Hilton and Kardashian girls are seen as the epitome of a tendency to venerate futility, stupidity and intelectual emptiness. To Europeans these are good for nothing ratchets who got famous because their parents were serious, successful people and who happened to film and leak a video of them fucking, something that, here, is seen as shameful and undignified. And we're yet to understand why those three rapers are seen as musical talents let alone venerated as they are. Elvis is the epitome of that. Why exactly is the man venerated? He had a pretty sexy and charming voice, I'll give him that. And he had a great image and that's probably why he is so adored: image. The end-all-be-all to americans, it seems. Elvis was a ZERO at musicianship and a complete, utter incompetent at anything pertaining to creating a song. But because he was good looking and played the sexy card he was automatically adored by the american public. Only in a society that craves people like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian and that elevates to the musical pantheon guys like Biggie, can a musical act like Elvis Presley be adored. Apart from a dozen loonies, no one in Europe sees Elvis as anything other than a guy who was pretty good-looking with style and a good voice. Great talent though? Worthy of veneration? Music legend? No way, unless, of course, you look at Paris Hilton to have an idea of how to dress, can't wait for the lattest Kardashian papparazzi pic and find something thought provoking in Biggie's lyrics.

I'm from Europe, I like Elvis. But I don't think I'm a "loony", at least, I don't think so... But would I know it if I was?? Anyway, I'll think about that later but first, a word on Elvis;

Could he write songs or play instruments? No. But he was more than just a good voice and a pretty face, plus, he never claimed to be a songwriter or musician. He had excellent stage presence and charisma to burn. And even though he didn't write any of his songs, he performed them better than anyone else. I know that last part is debatable, every one will have their own opinions on that, but 50 million Elvis Presley fans can't be wrong. wink
Also, you have to compare him to other acts of that time. Aside from maybe Little Richard and a few others, he was head and shoulders above the rest and influenced a lot of artists that came after him.

Having said that, I do agree he is overrated.

and, believe me, there's nothing on the Beatles catalog that compares to, say, Mozart's Mass in C minor or Beethoven's ninth.

I'm not saying they're not important. I'm saying they're not on Bach's, Beethoven's, Mozart's or Wagner's level as most people tend to rate them.
BTW, I'm sincerely hurt you don't take me "serious" anymore. Like, a lot, mmmkay?

PS- I don't know who are the biggest loonies, if Elvis Presley racist fans- who swear he was a guitarrist who wrote his music (it's in the credits mmmkay?)- or the dellusions of grandeur Beatles fans who rate them as being in the same league as a towering genius like Beethoven.

I agree with most of Hudson's list up to the 2000's except I would take John Denver and Van Halen off his list. John Denver made folk/country/pop music mainstream at a time when it was rock or folk/pop music. As for Van Halen, because of Eddie's superb guitar antics (switch out with Motely Crue).

As for past 2000:

Cold Play

Beyonce

Black Eyed Peas

Jay Z.

Katy Perry

2010 all of them

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Excellent Post! This is probably the smartest thing I read in this thread!! Americans aren't really that bright! lol As you mentioned, we pretty much make "nobodys" into celebrities over dumb things that have no value.

I think you captured the superficial and dumb mentality of Americans and American culture perfectly, (I am American by the way lol). The reason why Elvis is idolized in American culture is because he represents the idealized image of what it means to be a American. He is white, tall, good looking and charismatic. That is why they elevate him like he is God despite not playing one instrument or contributing to any songwriting in any of his music. Then you have Black artists like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Dominos who really pioneered rock n roll music and were the original innovators of estabishing the genre into what it was. However,t hey get no credit at all for their contributions and a puppet act like Elvis pretty much takes all their credit all because he is white and good looking. IMO, Elvis success really showcases the dark things about our culture that is bad. A lot of his success and popularity was the result of discrimination and racism and a lot of those ideas are still continuing now.

Lauryn Hill has a unique situation.

You're right, she is not a legend.... but I definitly think she is a R&B icon. (Yea it she just has one album) but its a very iconic album that was groundbreaking musically. The Miseducation is also influential and culturally resonating. It also has influenced an entire generation but I agree she is not a legend.

[Edited 8/18/16 6:41am]

Oh I'm not saying she isn't an icon because she definitely is within R&B, hip hop and female artists but as a solo artist, she's below the level of legend, even if you count her work with The Fugees, that only increases her discography to 3 albums. When you got people saying she's one of the GOAT with only 1-3 albums to her name, the most recent of which was released in 1998, then that's where it's fair to say she is overrated. When an artist leaves you hanging at the peak of their career or with their best work (Biggie and Lauryn, respectively) then people tend to overhype said artist. 2Pac also applies here but he's got a complete discography and was on top of the world before he died so he isn't overrated to nearly the same degree as the other 2.

Okay this makes sense and I think this is a fair argument, good points!

[Edited 8/21/16 7:08am]

I consider you the wisest person here, everything you say here is the truth. Americans seem to venerate these hoes and socially irresponsible thugs and I can not understand why. Rap is not music, it is grunting to a drum machine beat. I mean anyone can be a star by turning on a drum machine beat and saying "Fuck a bitch, kill a nigga make and smoke some weed, get some ice in the trap, drink champagne, Gucci Gucci, Fiorucci and Bentley bitches" and all of a sudden they are musical and social phenomenon on the level of Coca Cola and Mickey Mouse.

.

Why is it popular, these people are paid to do it by big corporations with vested interestsin private prisons, they pay these thugs like Jay Lips and Biggie Smalls to sing songs about commiting violent crime and glamorise the thug lifestyle. Then at risk youths (Mostly poor and badly educated) emulate, end up in private jail making money for these corporations. Any rapper who wakes up and realises this is all a plot to systematically keep the brothers down and decides no more of this thug shit, is killed by their illuminati, why is it the murders of Biggie and Pac were never solved, because the Killuminati made sure they were not. Meanwhile Jay Z, Beyonce and the Kardashians are happy in their roles, but if they ever become conscious, they too will die.

.

The hoe culture of scantily clad pop singers singing about sex and walking whores like the Kardashians and the playboy girls, ensure females will have no problem copulating and producing more thugz for the money prisons after buying and consuming degenerate filth in rap music, emulating violence and drugs and ending up in the slammer, earning money for Time Warner and the state of Redneckville.

.

Also I only want to add, that Elvis was overrated in 3 decades, not just the 1950s, where he was not so bad, but the cheesy music and movies of the 1960s and then the fat bloated rhinsetone studded apparition of the 1970s Vegas stage also cement his place in history. You guys are right, he could strum a guitar and nothing more (Okay writing a few simplistic country songs, which takes little talent) and was dumb enough to give half his moolah to a Dutch conman who had no soul beyond wanting money and working the low iq star like a dog. (Tom Parker was not a Colonel and not even an American he was a Dutch man called Andreas Kornelis van Kuijk.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

No way, unless, of course, you look at Paris Hilton to have an idea of how to dress, can't wait for the lattest Kardashian papparazzi pic and find something thought provoking in Biggie's lyrics. But worshiping Prada, Chanel is just as empty as worshipping the K-Trash. Granted they bring art out in their fashions, but what are they doing to society beyond that? Prada and Chanel labels are used to be divisive and separate the elite from the commoner! K-Trash just do it on a different economic level.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

I just read 'overrated' Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Paul MacCartney in the same sentence.

I think I may have gone blind eek

White privilege? Fangirls are what made Elvis be considered the greatest thing really, they also did that with The Beatles. But didn't British artists (i.e. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin) admire Elvis? I think his death at a relatively young age added to his "iconic" image

Here are some acts that actually had some acclaim but I thought were over-rated. Some of the ones mentioned in other lists such as Bread never were acclaimed at all so I don't know how they were over-rated. I like some of my picks but still felt like they were over-rated.

1960s

The Kinks (like them okay but some considered them the 4th best behind B, RS, and the Who).

The Who (much better in the 1970s than 1960s)

The Grateful Dead (yes, a greaat jam band but studio work is subpar)

Herman Hermits (okay, they didn't have acclaim except at my grade school!)

Frank Sinatra (the 60s and before) - Never really got his brilliance. Just his sociopathic tendencies)

1970

Christopher Cross

New York Dolls (novelty act).

Bad Company (decent but too generic for the acclaim they got when they started)

Paul McCartney (some good stuff mixed with too much sugary fluff)

Bee Gees ( SNF music wasn't terrible but just not as good as the hype and it was overplayed).

1980s

Guns n' Roses

Michael Jackson - not a hater but don't thin he was amazing either -Thriller had Filler

Journey (I know, shocked )

Queen (spotty during the 80s, great in the 70s)

Janet Jackson (modest talent at best)

1990s

Garth Brooks - self hype ( 1980s too)

Mariah Carey - she stopped singing melodies and still went to #!

Brittany Spears - Not really acclaimed but better received than she should have ever been.

Bruce Springsteen - I like Bruce but didn't but thought his 1990s albums overly praised

Whitney Houston - Too commercialized for the most part.

2000s

Puff Daddy/ P Diddy - Diddly Squat

Red Hot Chili Peppers (2000s output)

D'Angelo (like but too little output and too acclaimed)

Rob Thomas - Just okay.

Usher - seemed to have the goods but never made a great album

2010s

Kayne West - I do think he is creative but this doesn't make for consistent albums.

Taylor Swift - I actually think she is okay but shocked that she wins so many awards.

Katy Perry - Perfect for my elementary school aged kids -and that's all.

Maroon Five - Not that acclaimed but too rewarded for overly calculated product.

Ariana Grande et. al. (interchangeable sexed up young females with okay voices but soulless.

This is what irritates me about this site. A lot here act like white priviledge doesn't exist in relation to certain artists success. Elvis was popular in a very racially driven/ white power culture in which a lot of the Black artists he emulated did not have any rights, freedom or priviledge. It was hard for Black artists to make a stand for their art and to be acknowledged because the society in which they lived was full of bigotry. This is why Elvis was able to profit off of emulating Black talent despite not writing a lick of his music or playing a instrument.
