Anyway, maybe 3 or 4 months later I met him again in London in the BBC studios. And he remembered me from before. A real class act and a true gent. But like I said in one of the posts above. As much as I love December Song, I find it hard to listen to. Especially since my mum passed on. | |

I like a lot of the usual ones, Slade, Lennon, McCartney, Pogues etc but I also like particular versions better than others. For example, 'Christmas Wrapping' by The Waitresses is wonderful, but only in the single version, the album version (which has crept on to loads of xmas compilations) has extra superflous lyrics and is (possibly) a different mix. The single is Christmas Eve: bright, perky, fun and festive, the album version is Boxing day: hungover, tedious, still a little festive - but by the end of it, you're just not in the mood anymore. But my main bugbear is what the bastards have done to Greg Lake's 'I Believe In Father Christmas'. The original single starts off very quietly and steadily builds to a raucous finale whilst still retaining that hint of darkness and betrayal. When it appears on compilations (especially digital ones) it has been 'normalised' to within an inch of it's life. It's still a fabulous song of course, but the 'magic' of the track has been completely obliterated.

This one's very heartfelt... There's an original by the songs writer, William Bell, but I prefer this cover. This one for the novelty and feel of nostalgia. I tend to like the ancient stuff in arrangements that don't attempt to be contemporary or that incorporate Latin verse. Sting's take on ""Gabriel's Message," The Sixteen's "Coventry Carol," and traditional arrangements of "Angels We Have Heard on High" come to mind.
