Last time he toured, there was a date scheduled for Hamburg, Germany, too. That one was cancelled, I guess probably because the venue was MUCH to big for him. This time, the venue is much smaller but to charge 50 - 70€ for that venue... I'm really undecided.

confused The last time I saw him in Hamburg I think I paid half of that. And it was great. But...I´d be more than willing to pay 50-70 € . I think he´s worth it. I paid 38 for Mos Def(Yassin Bey), and while the concert was good, it was much cheaper to

.....cheaper to organize and arrange, i.e a DJ and a microphone and a bunch of samples. Still great show, but then again after two bad shows ( in Amsterdam and Munich) Mos Def just HAD to deliver. D´Angelo on the other hand comes with a band, lots of roadies, stage technicians, etc. etc.

So in comparison , it´s not that expensive....or rap concerts are just too damn expensive. lol

I'd go for that price, no questions asked. He killed it here in Auckland last week and his band is of the finest calibre!

D has three big problems.

Number one-old boy is an ARTIST. Not the way Prince is an Artist-D is 20x times more sensitive than P is-I love P, but I wouldn't call him sensitive. Many, many, many people have said D is not cut out for fame. He doesn't have the skil set. Too shy, too sensitive.

Number two- D is stubborn. He cannot and will not be told what to do. It doesn't help that he came into prominence very early and was pretty much able to do what he wanted-got a sweet publishing deal, acolades and he took no shit from his record company or ignored them. D operates on his on time.

Number three- Boy is an addict. That really doesn't help.

Agreed. Read Marvin Gaye's autobiography "Divided Soul" and one will clearly be able to see the parallels between those two. D's sensitivity, stubborness, and low tolerance for industry bs is very akin to Marvin's ways and I'm sure that plays a huge part as to why he hasn't dropped this record yet. He's a human being with issues (like us all), so I get it and I'm still gonna be patient with the brother until that day comes. I've been just as frustrated as everyone else as to why he hasn't come with a new record in so long, but that man deals with life and all the crap that comes with it in a way that most could never relate to. The industry is a mf and it can really mess with certain folks heads the wrong way and truth be told - we really don't know his story other than what's been shared by him and those close to him. We all knew in the aftermath that Marvin had a serious story..one that affected what he did creatively all the way up until he died and it's sorta the same thing with D. D is probably battling certain demons that none of us have a clue about and no doubt it probably affects his progress AND motivation. And don't think for one second that dude don't have a problem with his self-esteem and such; especially with the on-going battle to keep that weight off. That's probably something he hid for years and struggled to cope with and it messes with his head in ways that none of us could fully understand. Thank you for Scriptgirl for posting such a genuinely honest defense about D'Angelo. He still has his music chops and that's been more than evident when you see him today. Let's keep him in our prayers and hope he's able to get it together enough to deliver the 3rd chapter of his musical journey in a triumphant fashion..

Jrodndigo, you are welcome. I love D to death. If you go back to the 90s and read any of his interviews, etc, you can see that he struggled with fame and money. D never thought he would blow up as he did. He wasn't expecting and could do without the fame. D really is the last person who became a superstar before social media blew up everybody's game. He is a rara avis-no one really knows shit about D. He keeps it tight-that is when Grandma Jenkins, Aka Questlove, Aka Mouth Almighty Tongue Everlasting, isn't putting D on Front Street and Blast Avenue.

D genuinely does not want fame. His hiatus from the music biz was eerily prescient-it came right before the music industry really went to shit and right before social media transformed how we look at and deal with music and musicians. Old Boy was ahead of his time. I still have faith.

It feels good to know that there are people out there who really seem to care about D´Angelo´s wellbeing and who take him this seriously as an artist regardless of the industry´s and the audience´s expectations.-

If he needed a long break and he took it, then so be it. To me, he was never really gone (soundtrack songs, a duet or feature here and there, live shows etc.etc.)

-

I´m glad he´s still alive and out there doing shows and making music, and I´m relieved to hear his alright and did a show recently. That´s good news.

-

I´ve read Divided Soul many, many, times, I bought it more than twenty years ago because I´m also a huge Marvin Gaye fan. D´Angelo spoke about Marvin in the GQ interview and I agree that there are so many parallels.

I ´m looking forward to seeing him again, if possible, and I believe his next album, if it ever comes out, will be an enjoyable listen because to this day I´ve never heard a D´Angelo song that I really disliked, and I never skip a single song on his albums.

-

Nice to finally see some compassion among fellow D´Angelo enthusiasts.

I really enjoyed reading your positive post.

thumbs up!

Have you read the new Dave Chapelle interview in GQ yet?

I liked what he said about D´Angelo, especially coming from Dave Chapelle:

"I know you used to live near D'Angelo. Do you think his album will ever come out?
I'd like to think so. I haven't talked to him personally in a while, but the last time I called him, he had a long outgoing message on his machine. It was like a Malcolm X speech. And the last part was so intense. He was like, "The price of freedom is death!" Beeeep! I didn't even leave that dude a message. I just hung up the phone. Like, just listening to D'Angelo's answering machine puts you on the no-fly list, it's so militant. When a guy goes away like that, they might not come back for any number of reasons. Yesterday I was watching this YouTube video, and it's William F. Buckley interviewing Muhammad Ali when Ali was banned from boxing. And one of the guys on the panel asks Ali, "Do you miss being the heavyweight champion of the world?" Ali is like, "What makes you think I'm not still the champ? I'm still the champ." The guy replied, "Wait, no, no, no—that's not what I mean. Do you miss boxing and blah blah blah?" And Ali is like, "Nah, I don't miss boxing. As a matter of fact, I could call my sparring partner today. I could box all afternoon. I miss boxing for money." In other words, in his mind, just because he wasn't in the public eye, his title was no less legitimate. And his capabilities were no less legitimate. He looked at it like, "I'm just being separated from my livelihood, not what I love." So I look at a guy like D'Angelo and I'm like, I'm sure he's still making music. It's just a matter of whether or not he wants to share that with us or not."

Kool, I already made a post about what Dave said in GQ.

The only D song I ever heard that I hated was that awful Glass Mountain song and I think that has to do with one of the cowriters of the song. Not mentioning names, though.

Really? For some reason I didn´t see your post, and I just scrolled through this thread again to see if it´s here.

I´m not familiar with Glass Mountain. Was it on a soundtrack? And....who´s the co-writer?

Glass Mountain is on Mark Ronson's cid that came out a few years back. The cowriter-one of many, it seems on that song-is someone who is in D's current band.

"KF". This person did a lot of co-writing on the new album as well; very much in the way that he had Angie do for him on both Brown Sugar and Voodoo. I think the co-writer in his band is an excellent addtion to what he's currently doing though and I'm gonna give her a chance. I dig the lyrics of GMT, but the vocal production doesn't do the overall song much justice. My biggest concern is why RS isn't contributing to the new LP. It's like..MJ had Rod Temperton and after Rod..his thing didn't have that magic anymore and I surely hope that doesn't happen with D. I liken D's transition to how Prince did away with the Revolution altogether right before he dropped his opus "Sign Of The Time" - meaning there will be some old flavor and a LOT of new flavor on this next joint. And as most know, SOTT is still his greatest album (bold statement I know, but I'm stadning on it lol). We'll have to wait and see I guess.. #fingerscrossed

The problem is, Angie is 10x more talented than KF and a MUCH better singer. I have heard most of KF's music-nothing special in the least. Hoping the material KF wrote does not make the album cut.

See, as usual, Ms Trina is talking some damn sense! (I see you, Ms Trina). I don't much mind Chappelle flapping them gums, but Questlove needs to shut it. Granny Jenkins (aka Questlove) takes credit for everything from the birth of neo soul to D changing his underwear. I'm sick of it. That fool needs a muzzle.

And I agree with Ms Trina-I love how D keeps himself to himself. Shows he has some damn class, self-respect and sense.

I feel you on that..most definitely. I think D working with KF has a lot to do with his P-Funk obsession. And I say "obsession" in a nice way; not a critical one. He's a hardcore P-Funk head and D is way funked out at the present and his connection with George led to his connection with her. I think a part of his creative process is his co-writes with certain people who's really connected and in tune with him such as Angie, his brother Luther, Ray, and now KF. But the thing with D is..he can flip anyone's rough draft into something dope and I think that may be the case here. Dude has a blessed ear and knows how to get what he needs outta certain situation involving co-writers. Plus, it was probably way cheaper to do his thing with KF than any of the aforementioned LOL. But yeah...in all seriousness, I am going to patiently wait and see what he brings with the new stuff. I wouldn't worry too much on what she brings to the table. I trust D'Angelo

There's a lot about this KF thing that I could say and I don't think it has to do necessarily with PFunk. I think it has to do with other things and I think there is a pattern, although that pattern has less to do with D than it does with KF. There is a lot more I can say, but I don't want to, in part, because a lot of stuff has been played out on social media already and I don't want to hurt any feelings, because D's people kind of watch stuff and so do people surrounding him.

I think D should stick with Angie and Luther-I was pleased to see them onstage together reunited at Soulfest and hope this leads to more collabos. I am fine with D's Pfunk leanings, but maybe he should go to the source, George. George loves D to death.

I trust D as well. HE isn't the problem, let's put it that way.

Let's also say that D's Pfunk obsession is the only way a door got opened for some people. Now whether it is because it was a result of D's obsession with Pfunk or because an individual had been trying to access that door for ages and finally got in through luck and circumstance, well...

PS. What I mean by "Other people" are the Chapple and folks how claim they are in D's circle.

It's this exact 'shut up and get over it/stop being a crybaby' attitude that exacerbates situations like D's. If we could all just shut off our issues by volition then there wouldn't be any in the first place. If shaming/guilt-tripping people out of issues like addiction, depression etc was worth anything then we'd sure has hell have none of that by now.

As for the claims regarding D's album, I'd say Russ Elevado, the man who is producing the thing could be considered a somewhat reliable source of info. Too much is being made out of missed deadlines though, especially as it's obvious that there have been issues behind the scenes, so all we can do is wait. Easy enough to take the rest with a grain of salt.

Regarding KF: What's the source for her co-writing credits? I can't find any indication of her working with D in any area other than touring vocalist? I see her name in the long list of writers for GMT (i.e. no way to know exactly what kind of input she gave) but it's a bit of a leap to assume she's heavily influencing D's writing in any way, or that it's necessarily a bad thing.

I throw shade all day that co-writing credit for Glass Mountain, because there are a TON of writers on that song, which is not very D-like. KF could literally have written like a consonant on it.

Allegedly, KF co-wrote Sugar Daddy, which might be one of the reasons she had a bit of a solo on the part in concert.

KF is the first one to say and only one, as far as I know, to say she has been cowriting or cowritten with D. She's been harping on that for years and I might be impressed if there were less writers on GM or more examples of what she has written.

I just think her style doesn't mesh with D's and I am in no way impressed with her solo efforts. Her indiegogo type effort for her album didn't go well at-fell far short of her goals.

Anyhoo, I hope that D at least collabed with Raphael this time around. They make magic! And I agree with Russell being a good source. He is also truthful, cause he will make it clear that while he loves D, he doesn't love a lot of the stuff that comes with D.

If a lot of people curled up in a ball, sucked their thumbs, or self-medicated everytime issues arise, I doubt if some folks, would've survived the shit they had to endured for centuries. Irrespective of what path a life takes; there's an amount of b.s., doubt, and trials & tribulations that goes with it. You either find the fortitude deal with whatever or the world will roll right over you. But it seems everything is a trama these days... you have a loaf of bread under your arm and yet some people still find something to whine about or self-destruct.

You missed the point. It's one thing to just say 'find the strength/fortitude/whatever' to get over something and then to actually do it. And even then, the issues might just lie dormant or be repressed. Instead of pressuring people like D to 'man up/stop sucking your thumb/self-medicating/whatever', how about actually supporting them through it? It's kind of ridiculous to get caught up on something as petty as dramatics when someone's wellbeing/livelihood is at stake.

There's obviously some weird taboo going on here, but I'm going to bite: who is KF? I've tried to follow the clues provided but I've come up with nothing. Feel free to pm me if you feel speaking the name in public will bring about a curse upon you and your descendants.

lol KF = Kendra Foster. I guess we've become so used to abbreviating D'Angelo as D that the habit's caught on to his collaborators!

I tried to keep it on the low out of respect to her, but yeah lol. Sounds like you have more info as to what's really up than most regarding her. I've heard things as well, but yeah...maybe it'll all come out in a book someday lol. You guys should check out this Facebook page called "D'Angelo Connect" that really shows D love a unique way that really goes deeper than being just a mere fan page. Super informative and it's ran by this young brother outta Florida who champions D in such a genuinely dope way and this really kid knows his stuff musically. Thanks again to Scriptgirl for keeping it all the way real. I love it. D's gonna be alright and again, I so look forward to this new album dropping soon and blowing our minds smile

Got no problem with keeping it real, thanks for listening. Check your PM, Jrod.
