Nelly ''I Put On A Movement The Whole Game Sounds Like Me Right Now''

I usually stay from making threads like these... but this is a general question. WTF Is Nelly talking about? what movement did he create? the band aid on the face that was big in 2002 and early 03? like... what movement? and what rappers sound like him? lol

He said the whole game sounds like him... but who exactly has been biting his style? where the fuck is he getting this info lol

well, I think Nelly has/had a point. I mentally disengaged hip hop years ago, but Flo-Rida for starters bit Nelly's steez. When i found out Get Low WASN'T a Nelly song, even WITH the Apple Bottoms reference (Nelly's clothing line) i was like dayum, dude is going to need stitches! He should've given Nelly a nice check on GP. But yeah, there's probably some delusions of grandeur in Nelly's comments, but maybe he meant the continued "pop-ification" of hip hop and sampling kiddie songs and nursery rhyme production. Chingy (Right Thurr) is another one and the whole "urrrrr" rhyme scheme that bit Nelly.

But, to make matters worse he bit Flo Rida with his Hey, Porche song lol lol lol

That shit sounds like it's trying to be a Flo Rida song confused i will admit the Nellyville and Country Grammer albums are guility pleasures. And he was BIG when i was in elementry going into middle school no doubt.

He hasn't had a huge thing going on outside of a few hit singles here and there from 04-10 and it seems he has a tiny bit of an identity crisis.

wow, you were in elementary/middle school when Nelly came out?!?! (i'm mentally filing this away for possible future reference LOL). so you won't be able to appreciate my Das EFX reference. when they came out, cats bit their style, (wiggity, diggity word play) so quick and hard that when it was time to follow up their debut (They Want EFX), they'd played out. Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, and Kriss Kross were the biggest culprits.

but to your point about "identity crises" - isn't that what hip hop IS, cats working thru their identity crisis on wax for thd world to hear? actually, it would be the same i guess for a wall st. banker or computer tech if they had a platform and a record deal! perhaps that's why we identify and like who we do

But Nells had to explain his abrupt descent right, cause Country Grammar is probably 50 copies short of being Diamond if it isn't already, and Nellyville was in the 7 mil range if i'm not mistaken! So yeah, a few scattered hits thereafter is a blow to the ego. His Sweat/Suit concept tanked

I love how some '90s/early millennium pop stars act like they did something historic or something. No your style was just trendy, that's it. It wasn't on some classic rock and soul shit. Sit your ass down.

Das EFX was a straight up gimmick lol

But yeah Country Grammar is inching on reaching ten million in sales. I think it was certified Diamond but I'm not sure. I'll check.

Nelly may have not been first, but he was the one who brought that sing-songy rap style to the masses. And sadly he is right. Everyone kinda sings their verses now.

I kinda agree with him (to a certain point). All of this country-rap, pop-rap, dance-rap, and Flo-Rida kinda stuff is what Nelly has been doing since the "Sweat" and "Suit" albums. IE, pop-rap music hasn't changed much since 2004.

I think the difference is before hip hop artists would have the "integrity" to not water down their styles by fusing it with these radio-friendly genres. Realness died with Nelly.

The formula works because most listeners who aren't a hip hop fan FIRST totally tune out the raps and only know the melodic hooks, so Nelly made the hooks singy, and the verses too.

He used to make totally hip hop shit, but he came out of the Jiggy era. Nelly probably hit his glass ceiling with this 1997 local hit:

After this, he was probably like "f--- it, I'll do anything" and added the singing fusion.

Gimmie what you got is a banger smile always liked that one.

But, i would say honestly Kanye popularized the sing-song thing. And guys like Bone, Thugs & Harmony did the sing-song thing beforehand.

Only reason i say Yeezy popularized it... is cause think of post 808's and heartbreaks... dozens of rappers Lil Wayne, Drake, Flo Rida, Waka Flaka, P. Diddy, Chingy, Jay Sean, Sean Paul, T.I etc. Al started having sing-rap songs... and more love songs... and some with auto-tune.

So, i don't know if i would say Nelly popularized the sing-rap style personally. I will give him props as mentioned his first 2 albums are guility pleasures! and were beyond huge.

I remember My Place, Over and Over, Grills etc. Getting a lot of play in the Sweat, Suit era. But really.. the hits came from Suit. None of the singles released from Sweat went anywhere lol

You're right, Bone Thugs brought it to the masses before Nelly, and Kanye is probably the reason for all that shit now.

Well, IMO, he was one of the last big hip hop stars to bring a regional sound to the mainstream. I give him that.

He's full of it.He was hot for a few years, just like his ex-boo, but outside of Flo Rida who is absolutely trash, I have to disagree.
