Exploring the Funk Genre

- I would like to thoroughly explore the funk genre as I am already quite the fan. However, I don't know where to begin. - I was hoping to get a list of the essentials: albums and artists. Any help would be great

I was thinking starting with James Brown and possibly ending at the end of the 70s. I've checked out most of Betty Davis and George Clinton's catalog already and I'm a fan of War.

Right on with James Brown, there would be no funk without him. Sly is a must. Great job on the George Clinton but don't forget Parliment, Bootsy and Worell's solo stuff. Herbie Hancokc's headhunters period must also be explored but then you go a little funk/jazz. Then there's a fine line when everyone went disco in the 70s and that shit is not funk.
