Reissue Talk 9

“Respect the Classics” reissues are planned for 2013, with eight more titles announced, as well:

  • October 22: DMX’s It’s Dark and Hell is Hot and Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, both released in 1998, will get double-vinyl reissues on gold and blood-splatter colored vinyl, respectively.
  • November 12: Two Def Jam classics from 1988, Slick Rick’s The Great Adventures of Slick Rick and Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, will be reissued on vinyl. Additionally, 50 Cent’s 2003 debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ will receive a double-vinyl reissue.
  • December 13: Gang Starr’s seminal Step in the Arena (1991) gets a vinyl reissue, while hardcore group Onyx’s debut Bacdafucup (1993) is reissued on CD.
  • 2014: a host of vinyl reissues for modern hip-hop classics from the late ’90s and 2000s, including Tupac Shakur’s Greatest Hits (1998), Eminem’s major-label debut The Slim Shady LP (1999), Common’s acclaimed Like Water for Chocolate (2000), N.E.R.D.’s In Search of… (2001 – UMe indicates this will be a double-vinyl title, likely based on the 2002 rock-oriented mix/pressing), both albums by Eminem side-project D12 (Devil’s Night (2001) and D12 World (2004)), Lil Wayne’s The Carter (2004), and Kanye West’s polarizing electronic venture 808s & Heartbreak (2008).

“Respect the Classics” draws from critically-acclaimed titles in the Def Jam, Interscope, Priority, and Virgin Records discographies and represses them on CD or vinyl. Thus far, UMe’s reissued N.W.A.’s 1987 debut N.W.A. and The Posse on CD and their seminal Straight Outta Compton (1988) on 180-gram vinyl. They’ve also re-released two N.W.A. solo albums: Eazy-E’s Eazy-Duz-It (1988) gets the CD and LP treatment, while Ice Cube’s 1990 debut AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted is reissued on vinyl.

The Beatles: On Air - Live At The BBC Volume 2 cover artwork

The rumoured new Beatles album featuring previously unreleased BBC performances has been confirmed including a rare Lennon-McCartney song.

On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2 will be released in November. The album will feature 63 tracks including 37 unreleased performances and 23 previously unreleased in-studio banter and interview.

On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2 is the sequel to the 1994 The Beatles Live At The BBC which sold over 5 million copies within the first six weeks of release.

Ten songs from On Air were never recorded by The Beatles for any of their EMI albums. They include Chuck Berry’s I’m Talking About You and the standard Beautiful Dreamer. The rare Lennon-McCartney original I’ll Be On My Way will also be included on the album.

In 1980 John Lennon said, “We did a lot of tracks that were never on record for Saturday Club – they were well recorded, too.” Paul remembers, “We’d been raised on the BBC radio programs. One of the big things in our week was Saturday Club – this great show was playing the kind of music we loved, so that was something we really aspired to.”

The Beatles recorded 275 performances and 88 individual songs for the BBC between March 1962 and June 1965. In 1963 alone they performed on 39 radio shows. Their busiest day was July 16, 1963 when they recorded 18 songs in less than seven hours for the BBC. “You tend to forget that we were a working band. It’s that mono sound. There were usually no overdubs. We were in at the count-in and that was it. I get excited listening to them,” Ringo Starr said in 1994. “Everything was done instantly,” remembered George Harrison in an old interview, “But before that, we used to drive 200 miles in an old van down the M1, come into London, try and find the BBC and then set up and do the program. Then we’d probably drive back to Newcastle for a gig in the evening!”

ABBA / Ring Ring deluxe edition

ABBA‘s 1973 debut album, Ring Ring, will be issued as a CD+DVD deluxe edition on 14 October 2013.

.

The original album comes with 13 bonus tracks, four of which are new to CD, while the DVD will feature some rare TV performances and the now familiar ‘International Sleeve Gallery’.

.

Amongst the bonus cuts are the rare original versions of the album tracks I Saw It In The Mirror and I Am Just A Girl; the 1970 recording There’s A Little Man, featuring Agnetha on backing vocals (her first contribution to a recording written and produced by Björn and Benny); Man vill ju leva lite dessemellan, a 1972 hit single for Frida featuring backing vocals by her fellow ABBA members; and En hälsning till våra parkarrangörer, a spoken-word promotion single from 1972 on which the four ABBA members talk up their 1973 tour of Sweden.

.

Although the DVD looks a little thin on content, in addition to the archive footage, it features a 2012 report from Swedish television where Benny tells the story of the writing and recording of Ring Ring, and he goes in-depth on the group’s creative process, isolating the different tracks on the original multi-track tape. That sounds interesting.

.

The package also includes a 20-page illustrated booklet featuring an extensive essay on the making of the album.

.

Love Da Capo on Numbered Limited Edition SACD

.

No West Coast band put a deeper psychedelic spin on the mid-60s’ burgeoning folk-rock scene than Love. And during a twelve-month period between late 1966 and 1967, no group rivaled Arthur Lee and company’s freewheeling imagination and musical blend. Love’s tenure was brief, but its impact and influence will forever loom large. Home to the collective’s lone Top 40 hit, Da Capo is psychedelia at its best: a thoroughly original, vivid, unrestrained canvass for Lee’s beautiful, eclectic ideas and pioneering sonic journeys.

Mastered from the original master tapes, our numbered limited-edition hybrid SACD of Da Capo presents the album in living color. Interwoven textures, delicate accents, hand-stitched details, and wide-spanning dynamics integral to each song’s framework and function emerge with three-dimensional perspective. MoFi engineers painstakingly ensured that the disc breathes with tube amplifier-like warmth and transparency, characteristics tethered to the era’s finest recordings. Background woodwinds, horns, and vintage organs occupy distinct spaces, while the soundstage boasts both excellent depth of field and width.

Arriving shortly after its debut, Da Capo established Love as psychedelia visionaries. A cult classic since its original release in January 1967, the record greatly expands on the experimentation of the Beatles’ Revolver and predates the Rolling Stones’ Their Satanic Majesties Request, Fab Four’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Pink Floyd’s Piper at the Gates of Dawn by months. Executed by an expanded seven-piece lineup, Da Capo encapsulates baroque pop, proto punk, bossa nova, garage rock, and hard-driving jazz. Its limits are bounded only by Lee’s scope, and the Memphis native remains unbounded throughout.

Accurately tabbed by critic Lillian Roxon as “an amusing paradox,” Lee’s identity as an African-American channeling the sound of a white Englishman expressing the Southern blues gives Da Capo added mysticism and muscle. From the tumbling house of mirrors that is the opening “Stephanie Knows Who” to the galloping, heavy, reverb-appointed “Seven & Seven Is”—a hit tune that confirmed Love’s identity as Los Angeles’ baddest street toughs—the effort swings and surprises, each turn leading down new corridors.

Such discovery lies behind the groundbreaking “Revelation,” a 19-minute jam that occupied the entire second side of the LP and strongly rumored to have been produced by an uncredited Neil Young. Originally titled “John Lee Hooker,” it progresses as a free-for-all boogie that, according to myth, soon inspired the Stones to pen “Goin’ Home.” Similar tradition is tied to Love’s harpsichord-fragranced “She Comes In Colors,” a baroque gem that led to the Stones’ “She’s a Rainbow.”

Love Da Capo Track Listing:

1. Stephanie Knows Who
2. Orange Skies
3. Que Vida!
4. Seven & Seven Is
5. The Castle
6. She Comes In Colors
7. Revelation

Limited Edition 180-gram LP Mastered from the Original Tapes!
Don’t Cry Now, her first record for Asylum, solidified Linda Ronstadt's position as one of the day's premiere female pop vocalists and interpreters. This is one of the most exceptional sounding female vocalist recordings of the 1970s. The album spent more than a year on theBillboard charts, and peaked at No. 45. Guest appereances include guitar work by both the Eagles’ Glenn Frey and super-sessionman Larry Carlton, as well as harmonica work by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Jimmy Fadden, bass and drums by Lee Sklar and Russ Kunkel, respectively. And the legendary Sneaky Pete adds tasteful pedal steel accents throughout.
Remastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity's version sounds exquisite and reveals every nuance and shade of Ronstadt's voice. Don't Cry Now is part of Mobile Fidelity's effort to present this iconic singer's work as it was meant to be heard.
  1. I Can Almost See It
  2. Love Has No Pride
  3. Silver Threads And Golden Needles
  4. Desperado
  5. Don't Cry Now
  6. Sail Away
  7. Colorado
  8. The Fast One
  9. Everybody Loves A Winner
  10. I Believe In You

their little write up about Ladies Night is kinda funny lol

A shameless dancefloor cash-in move – but with a few nice touches! You all know the big title cut "Ladies Night", so we won't bother to describe it – but we can say that the group wisely hooked up with Deodato, who produced, mixed, and even played keyboards on the album. Deodato keeps a nice jazzy punch in the tracks, while still moving towards the slickly produced funk sound that was the group's main approach at the time of the record. JT Taylor's on vocals, and the album's even got a few mellow cuts – like the crossover easy number "Too Hot" – amidst the midtempo 80s grooves. Other tracks include "Hangin Out", "Tonight's The Night", and "Got To Get You Into My Life". And honestly, if the album was the first by a new band, we might rate it higher – but since it's one of the last semi-solid efforts from Kool & The Gang, we're not as enthusiastic.

"Got To Get You Into My Life" is a Beatles song covered by EW&F in 1978 lol the song they're talking about is actually called "Got You Into My Life".

but anyway....I'm happy to see that a remaster is on the way.
