A pair of 80s classics from the great Patrice Rushen! First up is Straight From The Heart – a huge album for Patrice Rushen – thanks largely to the track "Forget Me Nots", which is a perfect blend of jazz and soul, in that warm sweet style she was forging after her early days as more of a fusion artist. The rest of the album's every bit as great – and the songwriting and quality of the work shows that Patrice, like other jazz funkateers of her generation, was every bit as capable of changing round her styles and still staying strong. Titles include "I Was Tired Of Being Alone", "Where There Is Love", "Breakout", "If Only", and "Remind Me". Also features bonus tracks – "Forget Me Nots (special dance mix 12")", "Breakout (12" version)", "Number One (inst 12" version)", "Forget Me Nots (single)", and "I Was Tired Of Being Alone (Byron Clark rmx)". The album Now is filled with sweet grooves from the lovely lady – one of Patrice Rushen's last truly great albums, and a masterpiece of 80s groove with lots of jazzy touches! The keyboard sound has evolved a bit here – compressed with more electronic percussion than on Patrice's earlier records, but still done with a degree of soul that sets it apart from work by most of her contemporaries! Three wonderful albums – all wrapped up in a sweet single packag! First up is the self-titled Patrice album – a sweeeeeet groover by Patrice Rushen – her first album for Elektra, and a stunning blend of funky jazz and soul! The record really has Patrice stepping out from her earlier years at Prestige – working in some surprisingly great vocals next to tight lines on Fender Rhodes, synth, and clavinet, handled with a smooth and soulful quality that's wonderful all the way through – a blend of soul and jazz that few other players could do this well – no matter how many others tried to copy her style over the years! Rhythms are as hard and heavy as on the Prestige years, and the keyboards have a great sort of focus too – just the right mix of jazz to offset the vocals – which themselves are a wonderful discovery. The whole album's a gem – and tracks include the great funky classic "Hang It Up", plus "Changes (In Your Life)", "When I Found You", "Play", "Didn't You Know?", and "Music Of The Earth". Features bonus tracks "Hang It Up (12" version)" and "Play (12" version)". Next is Pizzazz – one of the records that not only broke Patrice out of the jazz funk ghetto, but which also had a pretty profound influence on the progression of soul in the early 80s – really pushing the use of jazzy elements that would help take R&B to a new level with bigger artists. Patrice plays keyboards and sings, and the sound's a sweet mix of funk and soul, smoothed down to get everything in the door at the same time. Titles include "Givin It Up Is Givin Up", "Call On me", "Haven't You Heard", and "Let The Music Take Me". On Posh, Patrice is at the height of her powers – equally magic on keyboards and vocals, and coming up with groove after groove in a sublime blend of 70s jazz funk and Minnie Riperton-esque soul! The whole album's a winner – real magic that never gets old, and the kind of LP that makes you understand why you'll find Patrice's records in just about any soul collection from the time! Yep! I have the Rhino reissue of "Straight From the Heart" and the Japan pressing of "Now". I hate to purchase titles that I already have. But, I gotta have those "Now" bonus tracks. The "Feel So Real" (Dub) is the BOMB! I have an excellent vinyl rip of it but now I'm getting it straight from the master tapes (hopefully). And I've never heard the "Get Off" (Extended Version) before so that will be a treat.

Columbia/Legacy will release a 2-CD overview of the 44-year recording career of Boz Scaggs. The Essential Boz Scaggs will be out on October 29.

The album opens with I'll Be Long Gone from Scaggs' self-titled 1969 debut and ends with Gone Baby Gone from this year's Memphis. In between are the hits (Lowdown, Lido Shuffle, Look What You've Done to Me) the classic album cuts (Loan Me a Dime, Dinah Flo) and a number of other tracks from throughout his career.

The liner notes are written by Rolling Stone contributing editor Anthony DeCurtis. He analyzes Scaggs' Texas rhythm & blues-flavored vocal mastery, and points to his hitmaking years at Columbia as "a seemingly unstoppable roll."

The juggernaut began with Slow Dancer in 1974 (produced by Johnny Bristol), and reached cruising speed in the spring of 1976, with the release of Silk Degrees. That album's string of four hits kept him inside the Top 40 on pop and R&B lists for more than a year: It's Over, Lowdown (Grammy Award® for Best R&B Song), What Can I Say and Lido Shuffle. All four of those touchstones are included on the album, along with the Silk Degrees album tracks We're All Alone (which served as a B-side on two separate singles) and Harbor Lights.

Silk Degrees was aided immeasurably by pre-Toto musicians Jeff Porcaro on drums, bassist David Hungate, and 21-year old David Paich on keyboards, Scaggs' backing rhythm section on the road for more than two years. Silk Degrees remains an iconic album which set the stage for much of what followed in the late '70s, with sales over 5 million copies to date in the U.S. alone. For Scaggs, it was the kickoff of the "seemingly unstoppable roll" that propelled him through the rest of that first decade with Columbia and his next three albums:

• Down Two Then Left (RIAA platinum, 1977, with Hard Times)
• Middle Man (RIAA platinum, early 1980, with Breakdown Dead Ahead and JoJo, both Top 20 hits co-written by Scaggs and David Foster, plus album tracks Isn't It Time and another Foster co-write, Simone)
• Hits! (RIAA platinum, late 1980, with another pair of Top 15 hits, Look What You've Done To Me with the Eagles' Glenn Frey, Don Henley and Tim Schmit on backing vocals, from the Urban Cowboy movie soundtrack, and Miss Sun)

After more than six years of non-stop touring and recording, Boz Scaggs took a well-earned sabbatical that turned into an eight year hiatus.

Scaggs' final Columbia album (and his first in the CD era) arrived in 1988, Other Roads, featuring the Top 40 chart hit, Heart Of Mine. In 1994, he was the guest of the syndicated Columbia Records Radio Hour. One of the show's highlights was his version of the vintage blues As The Years Go Passing By, backed by Booker T. & the MG's.

That same year (1994), Scaggs began his three album stint on Virgin Records with Some Change. Critics praised the co-production (his first official time behind the console) with Ricky Fataar of the Beach Boys, and the album became the source of Some Change and Sierra. Come On Home, a thematic album of Scaggs' favorite soul and R&B numbers followed in 1997, featuring Earl King's It All Went Down The Drain.

Twenty years after Silk Degrees and Toto, David Paich returned to co-produce (with Danny Kortchmar) Dig, Scaggs' final Virgin album, the source of Miss Riddle, Thanks To You (both co-written by Scaggs and Paich), and I Just Go. The Essential Boz Scaggs concludes with Gone Baby Gone (produced by Steve Jordan), the opening track on Memphis, released on the Los Angeles-based roots-rock label, 429 Records.

"Scaggs feels more conviction about the quality of work he is doing than ever before," DeCurtis writes of the artist. "There's a point at which you rely on inspiration, which is there from the beginning, but as with any career that has any kind of arc, I eventually began to recognize my own style. I really began to find out what I was doing here."

Yes, I posted the question on their FB page and they said they would probably know this week whether or not they will be able to license those deleted tracks or not. I think they are posting these titles 3 months in advance because they may have been trying to beat BBR to the punch. When BBR began to reissue some Evelyn titles a couple years ago, they made a statement that they were committed to reissuing her entire RCA catalog. FTG obviously was able to get the licensing first.

One of my favorite 90's albums. Think I'm going to skip the reissue, tho. I already have the CD maxi single for "Save Me" and it's crazy to do a reissue of this album without the B-Side "Reaching 4 U".

LISA FISCHER: So Intense CD (Deluxe Edition)

Anybody who has seen the documentary 20 Feet from Stardom knows that the title of this album is an apt one when it comes to Lisa Fischer. Fischer, who is one of the featured backup singers in the film, comes across as a pretty mellow person when not practicing her art, but get her in front of the mic either in the studio or on stage, and what pours out is just pure, deep magic. You can see the respect the other musicians and singers in the film have for her; there’s a reason she has sung with the Rolling Stones on every tour they’ve taken since the ‘80s, and sung backup for everybody from Sting to Tina Turner to Luther Vandross (who produces about half of So Intense). An outsized talent like hers would seem destined for stardom; but after she recorded this album for Elektra in 1991, she retreated from the spotlight, never to cut an album under her own name again, even though the record spawned three hits including “How Can I Ease the Pain,” which went to #1 on the charts and won a Grammy. Our Real Gone Music reissue features liner notes by Pat Thomas and four bonus tracks. You need to hear this woman sing.

Peter Gabriel Releases Remixed Version of ‘So’ Outtake

Peter Gabriel’s landmark album ‘So’ reached its 25 anniversary a couple of years ago, when fans were treated to a deluxe reissue. Among the bonus tracks on that release was a demo of a previously unreleased song called ‘Courage.’ But Gabriel isn’t done with it yet: He recently remixed the song for a brand new single.

The new version was produced by Tchad Blake and features new backing tracks added by Gabriel and guitarist David Rhodes, making it a more complete vision of the song than the one found on the ‘So’ reissue two years ago.

“When ‘So’ drew to a close, I didn’t feel the song was delivering in the way I had hoped, so decided not to include it,” Gabriel wrote on his website. “When we were reviewing all the material from that time, we wanted to take a fresh look at it and get it finished. I always liked the track and very much enjoyed the playing on it, especially the energy of the drums.”

Due Dec. 24, the sensibly titled ‘The Studio Albums 1969-87′ rounds up remastered and expanded versions of the 12 albums the band released over that span, starting with 1969′s ‘Yes’ and concluding with 1987′s ‘Big Generator.’ Rhino Records, the label behind the ‘Studio Albums’ box, gave the band’s catalog the reissue treatment in 2003-04, and the vast majority of this set’s contents debuted during that series; the lone exception is the remastered and expanded ‘Big Generator,’ previously available only as a Japanese import.

If the bulk of the music is nothing new to import-shy Yes enthusiasts, the package will still offer something new: artwork from Roger Dean, the artist who created the covers for many of the band’s most popular albums (and whose work has become largely synonymous with prog-rock records in general).

Housed in a clamshell package, the box also includes a fold-out poster of Dean’s latest creation. It seems rather likely that most Yes fans already have these albums — and these versions of these albums — but if you’re looking to jump-start your Yes collection in one fell swoop, then ‘The Studio Albums 1969-87′ is obviously the way to go.
