lionel's can't slow down was an amazing album and appealed to everyone
well not quite everyone. I know so many who preferred funky Commodores era Lionel, over sweater and jerry curl Lionel. I guess we were the holdouts. Some of his music at the time was just downright sappy, & the music that followed sounded like a soda commercial. Compared to what Prince and MJ were doing at the time, Lionel was a cornball. Sorry Lionel.
Lionel made the commodores, they were never that funky outside of Brickhouse they didn't do much that I'm aware of. I can't give clear details on that because when you grow up on stuff you don't necessarily remember everything but I don't remember the rest of the commodores doing much. Call it sappy but Lionel was/is one of the all time great songwriters, he quietly had more number one hits in those years than anyone but Paul McCartney. But, like most talented guys they lose the desire, has he done anything since those albums? We bitch and moan about Prince but Prince has given us volumes, George Michael, Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie have done little in comparison. Anyway, lionels shit was top rate for what it was.

ya that's some funk, it's ok. I'm still not ready to put them in the Earth Wind and Fire category as far as funk. I watched docu on the commodores and they got disgruntled at lionel bringing in the ballads, I thought that was crazy, without his ballads they were dead in the water.

ya, i never liked the song machine gun and wouldn't doubt they had more funk but you know, when you grow up and the music is just everywhere around you, you sort of know what's what but you don't really analyze. Either way, my opinion, and I could be wrong without Lionel they would be remembered for one monster funk classic and that's about it. I love Lionel, he wasn't as young or good looking as Michael or Prince but he was every bit as fine a songwriter.
