I think it was asine fucking move. Not a good way to get into the "mainstream",(which is something I don't think she wants to do anyway.) She just wanted her "5 minutes of fame" and to stand out, and she got it.

[Edited 2/7/12 7:09am]

Exactly, its the biggest audience she is ever gonna play for in her lifetime, do something something shocking, typical BS from this generation of thinking, been there done that, dont really care if it hurts her or not, plain and simple its something SHE chose to do, i dont wanna hear her whining in 6 months on some talk show how shes sorry, because i will have another finger for her.

Or she my just blame Justine, like Janet did.... lol

I think the dumbest thing anyone could do is apologize for something that shouldn't be of real concern. I shook my head when Janet did it. Just so she can be at the Grammy's, then she had to apologize (again) and this time refused. I wouldn't have said anything then. lol M.I.A., knowing her, ain't gonna apologize, I wouldn't want her to.

Its hard to believe that people watching a game where grown men knock the shit out of each other over a ball could be so (faux) offended by a hand gesture. Its fake outrage. I DO NOT believe it.

Its just that she's brown, and they can't call her a towel-headed terrorist without sounding racist unless they are on internet message boards, so they have to pretend to be mad like they pretended to be mad during titty-gate.

It's not a race thing. I don't care what kind of artist M.I.A. is, she should know how to put on a show on local tv. U think if Eminem, Pink or Miley Cyrus did the same thing for super bowl half time people would've been ok with that? I hate this "it's not that big a deal for me, so everyone should think the same way and move on." attitude. If some people, especially parents found it offensive and unnecessary they have a right to complain. I understand how unpleasant and annoying it could be for them to see a random performer (I bet a lot of people thought it was just one of Madonna's backup dancers) giving you a middle finger out of nowhere.

I bet she doesn't mind getting all these complains though she's talked about now more than ever.

Not even that though, not even the fact that its tabloid fodder like everything else in the media, but she shouldnt apologize because she did it, its that simple, this is where artists make me sick today, they do stunts whatever and they cry on Dr Phil and we like sheep feel sorry for them and that they have suffered. This was planned, she didnt run over somebody that she didnt see while driving, im tired of these "accidents" and the media and bloggers who are nothing more than gossip freaks that cant get jobs, making this crap news, but what can be expected from the twitter and facebook generation but useless info and hyped up BS.

That's I think! I didn't mind the nipple thing on JJ performance. It was kinda partly covered with a piece o jewelry anyway. But when she apologized...I thought..c'mon girl, don't do that, u didn't do anything 2 be ashamed of...I wish she had stood 4 it. I don't think M.I.A. will apologize either...

She regrets apologizing to this day and couple with the fact that alot of people didn't even catch it when it first happened.. It was the media constantly talking about that brought on the firestorm.. i had about 15 people in my crib and i was the only 1 that realize that something actually popped out.

I see your point Timmy, but my thing is, why do it at all? If are are performer and love your art so much, then let it speak for itself. I felt the same way about Eryka's naked romp. If you as talented as you say you are, then you there is no need for it. At the end of the day, you are going to be known more for that act than for your product. People will be buying your product, because it is associated with that act....To me, the intention is twisted...

And I definitely see your point as well. Sometimes I keep wondering if someone plans something like that, that they wanted to bring attention to themselves and distract it from anyone else. In this case, M.I.A. doing this took attention away from Madonna. Most of the post-Super Bowl reviews reveled in Madonna and Nicki and avoided talking about M.I.A. Thing is in the case of M.I.A., she had already flipped the bird in the video to Madonna's song. So I'm guessing because she did it in the video, she do it in the performance too. I guess this is why people are thinking this was indeed intentional and probably poorly at that. The Janet thing was done poorly too (tit).

This just shows how utterly fucked up America is. You KNOW nobody would've had a problem with her doing the handgun motion, yet a middle finger and everybody shits their pants. One tactic that works with these fools is often to just make them explain exactly why they're so offended.

Smart person: Why did you find that offensive?

Idiot: She flipped her MIDDLE FINGER!

Smart person: Yes, but why are you offended?

Idiot: IT'S HER MIDDLE FINGER!!!11!!1111!!!1

I couldn't care less what artists do in their own concerts. (My thing was that was at NFL) I don't see anything wrong with Erykah walking down the street naked in her own music video, or Prince showing his butt cheeks at his own concert. I don't agree everyone's going to be known for that particular act more than their art, because eventually if their material's good enough, people will find the connection between the act and the product and they'll be taken as true artists.

Let me tell you what I think is stupid about the country you're talking about. It's this extreme polarization people create, as if they know everything, as if their own experience and feelings are the most important thing in the world. "It was just a joke, you're NOT supposed to get offended by that" or "It happens everyday everywhere, what's the big deal?" Everyone's entitled to their own opinions and feelings, and suggesting that local television should have some kind of standard is an opinion, especially for family friendly program like Super Bowl. I don't see anything wrong with that. It wasn't her concert, it was a freaking football game. She was only there to entertain the crowd while the players rest, and more than 90% people tune in for the game, not the performance. They have every reason to get pissed off at her.

[Edited 2/7/12 18:51pm]

OK, you know what? First of all, I wasn't referring to you AT ALL when I wrote that. And I absolutely do NOT subscribe to the idea that "It was just a joke, you're NOT supposed to get offended by that." You're putting words in my mouth, and you're doing it extremely poorly. If somebody can explain to me WHY they find something offensive, I understand and will probably agree. For instance, I think Ricky Gervais is a fucking idiot because he's just mean as hell. I'm offended by a lot of things that are REASONABLE to be offended by, such as rape jokes, jokes about somebody's weight or looks, etc., because those things are GENUINELY HURTFUL.

But you know what? Jokes and attitudes like that are perfectly acceptable at so-called family events like the SuperBowl. They run the most insanely misogynist commercials during the SuperBowl, yet we're supposed to enjoy that and get angry when a female tit or middle finger is exposed for a fraction of a second. What kind of things do you think a little girl learns watching the SuperBowl? She learns she can't do what boys do, she belongs on the sidelines cheering for the men and doing elaborate, often dangerous routines for a fraction of what the men make, she learns that parts of her body are dirty and unacceptable but those same parts are perfectly fine on boys, etc. The Super Bowl is family friendly because we CALL it family friendly. When you really look at it, an argument could certainly be made that it isn't at all.

Furthermore, a lot of things that we consider "family values" in this country are rooted in bigotry and ignorance. We get angry about certain gestures and tits (but only on women) while meanwhile the average American child will have seen 8,000 murders on TV by the time they finish elementary school. THAT'S what pisses me off, is this irrational picking and choosing of what offends us. Of course families need standards for what their children see. The problem is, we're making completely nonsensical decisions about what is and isn't OK. I realize I'm in the minority on this in the United States, but just because I don't subscribe to American norms doesn't automatically mean I'm wrong and destroying American families or some such shit. Most Europeans also think we're insane when we get angry at things like this.

The Super Bowl technically isn't family friendly at all. You're letting your kid see someone get their ass torn up by someone throwing themselves at you like a bowling ball.

I didn't think your post was towards me, I just saw something interesting, and decided to add my opinion to itwhat I wanted to. Also, "It was just a joke, you're not supposed to get offended by that." was not towards you, I was thinking of general examples I hear from Americans that I thought was silly, like I said in the beginning of my post, "this is what I think is stupid about the country you're talking about".

What are the "reasonable" things to be offended by? It's still your opinion because you consider them reasonable. You cannot speak for everyone.

But you know what? Jokes and attitudes like that are perfectly acceptable at so-called family events like the SuperBowl.

That's your opinion, I get it.

When you really look at it, an argument could certainly be made that it isn't at all

What you said is all your opinion. No one said you're supposed to get angry at M.I.A. All I'm saying is people can be offended by it and if they do, it's ok, because they have different values and standards.

Also, Football is sports. It's rather aggressive and violent I agree but kids are supposed to learn something bigger than that from watching and learning sports games. It's about teamwork, and whether you lose or win what's important is that you did your best.

Most Europeans also think we're insane when we get angry at things like this

I get what you're saying that there's definitely an irony; children are not allowed to watch strippers get naked but they enjoy watching violent films where people bleed and kill each other. But that still doesn't mean we as eeveryone shouldn't be angry at woman's tit on local television. Like I said they're entitled to their own feelings and opinions. Though I never said I was personally offended by things like that but I do find those things unnecessary.

What MIA was thinking when she flipped the bird:

"Look at me, up here playing cheerleader to Madonna, co-horting with fricken Nicki Minaj, bopping around on a stage the easily cost over a million bucks, singing on a record I'd never listen to or make and performing at an event I'd never perform at. What the hell happened to me? Boy did I sell out. Fuck you? Fuck me! *flip*
