I usually don't go to the negative, but that's the dumbest rubbish I have ever heard. I am a Kanye fan but there is no comparison. LA REID should be smacked for saying stupid crap like that. He needs to chill on whatever he's smoking.

Musician? . I didn't know Kanye played instruments. What kind? I like Kanye, believe he has some talent, but I'm not convinced he's "great". I've seen great. Kanye isn't it. Even if someone pops up and tells me about an instrument Kanye plays, he still won't be great. He's not on any Prince level. I don't know why I responded to this.

I said surpassed him in terms of studio albums/work, because I think that Kanye's albums are a much stronger body of work. I did mention Kanye's excellent production yes, but nowhere did I state that Prince's production was poor, worse , or that I even preferred Kanye's to his own. I'm pretty sure I didn't say that. I also don't find my statement to be immature either.
Are you including Kanye in that statement?

No I mean Miles Davis, Rick James, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye ect. ect. Kanye's good for what he does but a lot of his songs sound the same and the alums have no flow and songs just fade out. I do admit I love My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy though.

Besides not having an Iconic movie, being able to sing, play guiter, play drums, play the bass, play the piano, dance, write music without samples, create spin-off groups using songs all written by him, create music in multiple genres, release several multi-cd song collections, create songs that have been covered by many people, and play arenas followed by small club sets on the same night they are exactly on the same level.

See what i mean? He says it all for me just before i'm about to go mental with the reply button lol. Honestly, I think that Unholy is just trying to be controversial. There's more talent in the opening 5 mins of Lotusflow3r than any Kanye CD. Also, add dancer, choreographer, director, poet, style icon and god knows what else we will eventually remember from the most versatile career of the most complete entertainer that popular music has ever seen - to that list....seriously! Reid's comments....they're so absurd i shouldn't have to say anything. [Edited 9/30/11 11:46am] This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

Alright... This has got to stop... I love Kanye...
BUT UNLESS YOU KNOW THE FUNDAMENTALS ON MICING A DRUM SET. YOU ARE NOT!!!!!! A PRODUCER. Kanye west is a beatmaker. Plain and simple. All he does is scroll through a library of samples and copies and pastes. A real Producer MAKES the samples. So everybody just calm down.

Then what did you mean by "surpass"?
You'd like all the songs to have distinct sound and you think Kanye's album does that. Yes I know you never said Prince's work is poor or worse thats why I thought you "preferred" Kanye's style. But you think Prince has 2 or 3 songs that have distinct sound per album? Is that your reasoning for saying Kanye has "stronger body of work" than prince therefore he surpassed him in terms of studio albums/work? If it is I don't see the relevance at all. Some of Prince's albums happen to have certain theme and he sticks to it throughout the album (which doesn't make the total output any weaker)and some of his albums are filled with songs that have different sounds and character from each other.

Kanye is a rapper, he doesn't do the same type of music or performing like Prince, but he is very good at what he does creatively and lyrically and he has a sense of humor, vulnerability and good visual ideas. That's what LA meant.

Kanye and his non rapping ass is not even close to the best rapper, but L.A. goes and mentions PRINCE. Prince???? L.A. Reid has got to be cray cray! Now I'm convinced.

lol ok. No need to get so mad simply, because I don't find ALL of your favorite artist's work as appealing as I do Kanye's. Plus, I mainly come here, because I enjoy the posters and the music discussions, which is why the bulk of my posts are in this subforum in the first place.
Also the whole: "always fast to throw Prince under the bus" is a huge fucking lie. There's only one artist I'm always fast to throw under the bus and that's Janelle Monae...and those OMFGWTF surburbanites or whatever they're called so I guess that's two... Actually I hold no grudge against them, personally, just their music.
Either way, no need to get so mad about it. I'm not going to suddenly leave, because you are having a huge titty attack about my personal opinions. It's really not that serious.
I was talking about actual whole studio albums rather than any particular aspect of them I thought. Example...when I listen to Controversey...I only really like one song, the title one. I have never encountered that on any of Kanye's albums, ever.
I know I'm going to get a shitload of flack for this, but I will be honest. Sometimes...when I listen to Prince's albums, it frustrates me, because I hear an awesome idea...but it just seems as if they were not fleshed out enough. A lot of it sound like incomplete ideas to me that really could have been awesome had he taken the time to actually work on them some more. They end up being forgettable. I'm also not that huge on lyrics (as long as they are not overly ridiculous) so hearing songs about jacking each other off or Nikki masturbating with a magazine they don't really have an affect on me where I think it's so shocking for an artist to sing about such things. So, when I do manage to get through an album and find a very strong song I like, coincidentally, it just so happened to be a single at the time the album was released. Before I was only aware of a few Prince songs & Purple Rain (the movie), so after being here I took the time to really collect his albums and listen to them with a keen ear. I have never heard of them prior so it's not as if I was going in with biased ears you know?
I understand having themes for an album, but in Purple Rain I think that the album sounds really cohesive and has a very strong theme. There I think a good amount of the songs on it sound as if they have their own personalities. When I go through the album I don't feel as if I listened to the same song for over an entire hour. That includes 1999 and Prince(1979) as well. For something like, Sign O' The Times...I think that's when I started to notice that a lot of Prince albums seemed to be following suit. (I do think that he has really improved a lot as a musician though as as I have gone through some of his work in the 2000s.) Some people like that...and that's ok too. It's just that I don't hold something like that in higher esteem when there are a lot of other artists/albums who don't so such things.
I don't feel this way with Kanye's albums and, especially, his latest one. I find his work to be way more 'fleshed out' and this includes the songs that I may not be particularly fond of as well. He's not really that great of a rapper either, but I enjoy his approach to the subject matter that he presents and how he goes about executing it. I remember hearing College Dropout when it first came out and was really impressed by it, especially after having abadoned rap/hip hop during the rise of Jay Z in the late 90s.
At the end of the day, I believe that no matter how gifted and talented an artist is, what I put more worth in is the end product, because it's something I have to dedicate my time listening to. Also, it's something that I will end up spending my money on. Concerts come and go and they may, forever, live in your memory. Yet my playlist can't access those fleeting memories when I'm doing something and I need music to listen to.
That being said, anyone can get mad all they want to, but it's not going to change my opinion whether one finds it to be shitty, full of shit, or whatever. At the end of the day it's subjective, because that's the nature of art.

I gotta disagree here respectfully. On a real basis? It's Apples and Oranges. Could Prince do what Kanye does? Probably not Can Kanye do what Prince does? No.
So when it comes to the end work, perhaps I have higher standards then you. But its not just the end product. The end product at times is pretty much a perfect storm of occurrences. And the sheer fact that it's ALOT easier to make good music these days then it was in the 80's is something you have to compensate for that.
The only way I can say Prince is better than Kanye, has nothing to do with the end product. It has to do with the talent. And Kanye West is a slave to his technology. The sheer fact that it takes him an hour on a beat instead of the normal 20 minutes, only shows that he cares more than other beat makers. Which is commendable. But Prince peaked in a world, where technology did not overshadow talent. Where you had to write and compose a good song, to be heard.
And we're only talking about music here. Once you add in song writing, and musicianship, it's no contest.
For me personally, in order to actually estimate this you have to take out "music" as the factor and focus on something like lyricism. And when you go to that realm, Prince wins.
Brian Eno said it best "Software and hardware have changed the rest of music dramatically in the last thirty or forty years. It's very very easy to make pretty good music... Pretty good isn't very interesting, but pretty good is possible. But writing songs is pretty much in the same place as it was in the days of Chaucer"
I'd give Kanye a lot of props cause he's exceeded, the boundaries his genre gave him. But if he wants to be Prince, he's gonna have to pick up a guitar and start writing songs not raps.

That's all fine, but the reason people are calling LA ridiculous is because he didn't say Kanye created some of the best albums of all time (which could possiby be true in some people's eyes), he said Kanye is maybe the greatest musician, performer, entertainer of all time.
Those are two very different things, at least in my mind My Legacy

Does kanye happen to release his crappiest songs as singles and leave his supposed ‘genius’ work on his albums? Because judging by his single releases which is all I’ve heard from him he doesn’t even rank in the top 20 of the new millennium. [Edited 10/1/11 2:59am]
