A good friend of mine was very high on Manson early on. After listening to Portrait of an American Family and Smells Like Children I was not impressed and it was not until I heard Mechanical Animals that I became a fan. Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood are a pretty solid trio of albums. The Golden Age of Grotesque is nearly as good but he kind of lost me a bit with the last two albums. Still, he was certainly one of the better and more interesting hard rock acts of the late '90s/early '00s.

This.

And despite being a diehard NIN fan, Antichrist isn't my favorite - Mechanical Animals is. Some stellar industro-goth-glam stuff going on on that album smile

Quite possibly my favorite song on my favorite Manson album! I wish more people would give their stuff a chance rather than just parroting what other people (with admittedly no experience listening to the music) say.

I just listened to the entire Holy Wood album and I'll tell ya, it's a work of fucking GENIUS! Marilyn, I always loved his music, but I went to further investigate, that guy knows how to write and produce a song. Boss shit! headbang

"Holy Wood", the title has one "l":

I like that cover art. I don't think Marilyn Manson has ever done a "brilliant album", but this is the one where the theme and the musicianship (by the other guys in the band) work together the best. He was still challenging his audiences by the imagery and the lyrics, whereas the albums that followed it slipped into music for girls that shop in Hot Topic territory. I suppose a shock rocker has to pay his rent too.

"Love Song" is one of the best songs he / they ever did.

Looking at their catalog, it's safe to say their material from Portrait of an American Family to Holy Wood were their best.

That's okay. The other week I was discussing with my friend what was the best The Cure album in retrospect - we've both been fans of the band for some 15 years - and he said "The Head On The Outdoor" was their best. I just stared at him and said, "Dude, it's 'The Head On The Door'". He had to go check the record cover.

At least it didn't take 15 years for you to figure it out.

I saw him live during this tour, which was a good performance. I just felt like he ran out of ideas after this album. Or maybe even during this album as the video to "The Nobodies" already didn't have the same vibe as the earlier Marilyn Manson. Sort of what happened to Tim Burton movies at the same time. lol

For me the great thing about those three albums is that they each have a fairly unique sound to them. He hit on a winning formula with Antichrist Superstar but he was not afraid to go in a different direction on the next album. Maybe some of the difference in sound was due to each album having a different producer/collaborators but ultimately the vision was down to Manson.

Agreed. Grotesque was his last great album. I'm a big Manson fan, but he needs to thank Alice for coming up with the schtick, 40 years ago...lol.. Kinda like most of Children and Portrait cds, and all his stuff, up through Grotesque is great!

Whenever you say that you can't, that's when you need to be trying.

I think Mechanical Animals is his best album.

I don't like a lot of his material, but Mechanical Animals is so Bowie-esch (in a good way), that I can't help but love it.

Manson is in my top three artists, along with Tori Amos and Prince.
