Robyn Does A Prince Cover.

The only time added bass to "When Doves Cry" sounded right to my ears was MC Hammer "Pray".
Seriously what are they playing?
I like her singing though.

Before opening the thread, I thought it was going to be her old cover of "Jack U Off". I was ready to shout "LATE" hehe.

Well, it;s still late LOL

Yep, this has already been discussed on the Prince forum
Apparently, some people there LOVED the version...
I guess it's an okish karaoke-like version, but as I've said, the voice of this lady is completely random, in fact I didn't know her until some people started to praise her here on the Music forum...I still don't like her, and that's remarkable considering that I dig many european 00s acts... Don't know how you managed to miss Robyn if your ear is even remotely pointing towards Europe.

She makes fun music but her voice is awful! I think Robyn should stick to her own songs.

i like her, but i don't think she did a good job here.

I'm trying to give even marginal talent a break these days (slim pickins). Like the girl's energy, but this cover just doesn't work. Something about it reeks of "dorky". Funk Is It's Own Reward

The band is all wrong, and I'm not sure I'm hearing the right emotions in her voice.
Here's a good cover by Robyn:

^^better. The material suits her voice far more than the Doves cover. Funk Is It's Own Reward

SOOO much better than her When Doves Cry cover. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

It sounds like something they enjoyed doing more than what anyone would enjoy listening to it. Nothing wrong with trying out things, they're often worth putting on youtube nevertheless.
I've tried to record this song for fun and it just didn't work out at all. It's really hard to make it work. Prince just sings it in a manner that is completely his own. There have been enough cover versions of this song to suggest that it really doesn't suit that well anyone else than Prince.
It's funny to observe how the synths are used on the track. What the keyboardist first plays on that modern controller sounds pretty bad, but when he switches over to that JX-8P it all of a sudden sounds right. Instant 80s.

Cover artists always try to add a bassline which really changes what people might have been filling in with their own minds for years.
Then there is the matter of drum programming, of which "When Doves Cry" is not easy to duplicate but is a very important basis of the track. It's almost the whole damn track.
Also, people never sing it with the same intensity, which only Prince can do I suppose. Those lyrics are really raw, and I never once heard a vocal that came close.
All of the above is the reason why I never tire of this song either. There's nothing else like it, even in Prince's own catalog.

I've tried to record it for fun too! But I didn't post it on Youtube

This is like the bored and lazy discount version of WDC. Amazing how lackluster this version is. Really cheapens such an amazing song.
So far the only cover of WDC that does it justice is the Romeo & Juliet version by that Trever kid.

"E" for effort.
Should'a left it alone though. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Love her and like this. I don't think she's going for anything remarkable here.

They played this song on a radio show I listened to the other day for kicks and giggles. They even played flatulence noises over the track and it fit right in. Plum awful... "Be glad for what you had baby, what you've got..."
