There is no doubt about the fact the Janet does R&B. Aretha is the only woman with more R&B #1s than her. She has more R&B #1s than her brother Michael. But, all that said, in spite of her lack of Pop radio support in the past several years, she is STILL a Pop artist, and has had her greatest successes achieved on the Pop (Hot 100 singles and Billboard 200 albums) charts. No other artist in HISTORY can boast that their album spawned #1 POP singles in three different calender years (RN). No other artist in HISTORY can boast that their album is the only album to ever achieve 7 top 5 POP singles (RN). No other female artist can boast of having 5 consecutive studio albums go to #1 on the Billboard 200. No other female artist can claim being the first to garner 6 top 40 hits from one album (Control). No other female artist can say that hers was the first album during the SoundScan era to debut at #1 (janet.). Her RN tour is the biggest debut tour in history, and still holds the record for fastest sell-out at the Tokyo Dome. She has more Billboard awards than any other artist. All of these things are proof that--while she is no doubt R&B--Janet is mostly a Pop artist.

Yes, but what all of you fail to understand is that the Hot 100 and Top 200 is not a "pop" chart per se! It's just the main chart, the combination of all the different subcategories! So that hasn't really much to say, other than that she's been most successful, when everyone supported her! Also the RnB chart is not neccessarily or exlusively connected to RnB music, but to sales in urban stores... at least that's what, I think, Billboards Fred Bronson explained years ago! People get to hung up on the, falsely assumed, pop and RnB charts.

Not so. Everything on the R&B charts is either strictly R&B or Hip Hop. Open up a Jet magazine and flip to the back, and you will see this. The Hot 100 is what is POPular, and, unfortunately, by today's standards much of it is dreck. As I said before, branding a black artist as R&B is nothing short of segregation in my opinion. I can't tell you how much it bugs me to go into a record store and see ALL the black artists in the R&B bin, even if the music they put out is predominantly Pop (Prince, Janet, Michael etc).

It still is not a pop chart! Music on the RnB charts is also popular... same for the modern rock or whatever chart!
I wish I knew where I found that (Billboard) definition of the RnB chart... I don't, so I can't back that up more satisfactorily... maybe they remove the songs, which are clearly not RnB, but the data is collected from urban (or black community, speciality or whatever you want to call it) stores. This branding stuff might be unfortunate, but I didn't come up with it... I also didn't come up with the definition RnB vs. Pop, when it comes to Janet, I said that the black community is supporting her more and more likely to warm up to her... I don't think I brought Pop or RnB into this! I only said, that her music is not as broad and more in a niche as the one's you don't want mentioned!

Stop being biased. And music on the RnB charts may be popular, but it isn't as WIDELY popular as music on the POP charts and TOP 40 RADIO as a whole. This is why there is chart separation. This is why there are various radio stations that cater to different tastes. That is why Britney Spears will never be played on a predominantly RnB-Hip Hop radio station, and Kanye will never be played on country radio. And, Janet's music, to you, may not be as "broad" as some others, but if you listen to, for instance, the janet. album, you will hear everything from pop, to rock, to RnB and Hip-Hop, to scat, to jazzy, to big-band, and even a little opera. "Empty" from TVR is electronica. "Throb" from janet. is house. Her music is broad in scope. Face it.
Yawn! Again... those charts still are not the pop charts! I'm not being biased, it's just the way it is... whether you like it or not! And the Janet. album is the one were she had the biggest worldwide success... for a reason.

Talking to you is like talking to a brick fricking wall. And that's not the way it is, because you are just going to be stubborn in your boxed in beliefs that Janet's music isn't broad in scope when I've clearly laid the facts out for you. If you don't want to believe it then that's on you.

Fail.
The Hot 100 and Top 200 represent overall POPularity.
Janet's success on those charts >>>>>
Just give up. Janet isn't a huge urban artist. That's not her audience. Ask any R&B or Urban listener and they will tell you the same.
I took this quote from another forum..... it was a janet jackson thread... and seriously THIS IS WHAT i was talking about...
OK that "you should" part sounded a bit harsh but you know I am European and I view music from a European perspective. Around 1989-1990, R&B music wasn't that popular in Europe whereas pop was. And Janet's singles were simply not popular over here because they were too R&B. So maybe it's a matter of different perspectives. And borders between genres can be mind-blowing. So sorry if I upset you. But I still disagree with you lol As for being white friendly, sure she was no doubt about it. But never to the extent that she was accused of being a sell-out like Whitney or Prince after Purple Rain.
you can see for yourself.... click the link... and look for this last post at the bottom of the page
and what exactly were you trying to accomplish by posting this?
LOL LOL LOL at Janet's music being "Too R&B" what a load of BS. Her music lacked electronica sound that is popular there. That's why her music wasn't as popular over there as it were stateside.

I just proved that janet music has always been urban influenced even when she is doing pop....
pop culture is harder on older artist...
where rnb is more accepting of older artst.... which is why janet still does well on rnb charts.... the urban audience is still supporting her....
if pop supported her... she would still be at the top....
That's excellent practice. What's the goal of the project?

Jeez! So full of yourself! It still isn't a pop chart per se... it's still just a combination of all genres! They would call it Pop chart if it would be... there wouldn't be any rock and country and whatever songs, if it would be a Pop chart.

I'm not so sure about that. "Pop" comes from the word popular and the Hot 100 are songs that are most popular. You'll find songs of many genre on there too. Pop isnt easily defined. It's a fluid genre that really just means "popular"
Musicologists often identify the following characteristics as typical of the pop music genre:
an aim of appealing to a general audience, rather than to a particular sub-culture or ideology[3]
an emphasis on craftsmanship rather than formal "artistic" qualities[3]
an emphasis on recording, production, and technology, over live performance[10]
a tendency to reflect existing trends rather than progressive developments[10]
much pop music is intended to encourage dancing, or it uses dance-oriented beats or rhythms

yep.. and there is different types of pop music... some lean towards rock, country, rnb, hip hop, electra, ect....
I realize that some people do consider it as the pop chart... but technically they are wrong! It is not the pop chart, it's just the main chart, which combines all the subcategories and thus includes all the different musical genres.

Obviously Pop comes from popular, but the number 1 song on the Modern Rock chart is also the most popular (in that genre) and still it's not the pop chart... same for the number one of the Rnb, country or whatever charts...
All I wanna say is that Janet's success on the main chart still doesn't tell too much about her audience. People get too hung up on those categories.
I love this video and how it shows her personality. This is back when I enjoyed MTV. Sound quality is bad though.
