In part one of this thread, http://prince.org/msg/8/338046 (the sticky), the rules are if you want your votes to be counted and reflected in the poll results, you need at least ten entries. They don't have to be ranked. The new deadline is September 1st.

The 80s poll has proven to be a great success, with 31 song ballots and a whopping 64 album ballots producing wonderful lists. Next up is the 1970s! I know a lot of people here quite love the 70s- funk, glam, punk, post-punk, electronic and new wave were alive and well.

Don't worry if you didn't participate in the previous polls- I'd love to have as wide of a representation as possible. Feel free to submit ranked lists of up to 200 songs and 200 albums, and I'll post the results after the deadline at midnight, July 31st, 2010 org time! Please submit your lists to ian_renner[at]yahoo.com, replacing the [at] with the @ symbol. Make sure you tell me what your Org username is. I'll reply to your message to let you know that I got your list. I'd prefer to receive lists made in Microsoft Excel with a .xls extension with separate columns for artist, album/song and year.

I'd like to change the artist format guidelines:

I'd appreciate artist names to be submitted this way:

David Bowie (not Bowie, David)
Cure, The (not The Cure) (This is different to previous poll formats!)

Each list must contain at least 10 albums or 10 songs.

One other thing- no compilations!

Feel free to use this thread for recommendations. Last time, most people just posted their lists here and didn't send me an Excel spreadsheet. I will accept these lists, but it takes me a lot more time to compile them.

Bring on those lists!

This is MY very subjective top 50 of the 70's. I am not delusional enough to think that Switch had albums as meaningful to the culture as Stevie Wonder or Sly Stone.

I was born in 1968 so you will notice most of my top albums are from the second half of the decade as I grew into a 'little cassette & vinyl buying fiend'. I was MOVED by music and it consumed my time as a getaway from everything.

So in 1978 - when I was ten years old - the albums I bought stuck to me. This is my justification for having many albums of the period (late 70's) ahead of landmark works by superstars from the early part of the 70's.

I heard all those early 70's tunes and they are familiar but I never associated my own puppy love feelings with records when I was four (`72) or five (`73). But for certain by 1978 - I FELT Otis Stokes on Given into Love by Lakeside. Suddenly music was vital in my life.

Also - you should know that I have an older sister (by five years). Because she was the first music consumer sibling I had, I gravitated toward certain pieces of her collection. She had EWF, Switch, and Heatwave records - which eventaully led me to buying my own funkier stuff like (Parliament, Bootsy, etc...)

Once into adulthood - I'd say about my 30's - I started adding to my library with the music from pre- 75 (or anything released before my eighth birthday).

I still don't have much emotional attachment with that music and in some cases the recordings kind of irritate me. I prefer heavier bass and harder hitting drums. Much of the early 70's recordings sound "tinny". That said, I become more of a Bobby Womack fan every day. He and Stevie were clearly ahead of their time from a technical standpoint.

...Music is a great journey. I love it. ...Just was looking at Timmy84's list and I see that I have a lot to catch up on and get hip to. ...Hopefully some of you younger .orger's will look at my list for some ideas as well.

One love!

Participation has jumped in the past few days, but there are still several lists that have been promised that haven't made their way to my digital doorstep yet! Add to that the fact that I broke my thumb (that's the 2nd time I've broken something this year!), and I think it's best to postpone the deadline until September 8th. I won't have the splint off until then, and I don't think heavy amounts of typing would help it heal. lol

Impossibilite! I'll just post the TOP10 albums, so it's not too big of a copy-paste job. Some albums I've been listening to who knows how long with a few current favourites thrown in.

3. Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine

4. Weather Report - I Sing The Body Electric

6. Brian Eno - Another Green World

7. Throbbing Gristle - 20 Jazz Funk Greats

8. Herbie Hancock - Sextant

Another extension! biggrin In that case, I'll send the excel file for my albums list tonight. I know that won't change. But I'll hold off on the songs list until the 8th since I know there are a few good ones I forgot.

Feel free to add more! I won't be adding these lists until my thumb can handle it, so I'm happy to take lists as long as the limit of 200!

LOVE that you've put The Man Machine so high.

Thankfully, I only use my right thumb for the space bar, but it seems to be throwing me off to do that with my left thumb, because I'm making typos galore! lol
