'Musician' doesn't only apply to instrumentalists. It also applies to singers, songwriters, conductors, composers, etc. Basically, anyone that performs music.

I don't think you do if you're listing people like Nas, Ludacris, Kanye West, etc. They're great sampling other people's music, or sampling beats, or creating beats in a drum machine. I dare either of them to sit at a piano and play something worthy of listening to, or pick up a guitar and play something funky.

So fucking what???!!!!! I like them and yeah they sample music. You don't have to like them, but don't even start this bullshit.

As a musician, they are NOT musicians by any stretch. They're rappers, or entertainers, or even poets perhaps, but they are not musicians.

'Musician' doesn't only apply to instrumentalists. It also applies to singers, songwriters, conductors, composers, etc. Basically, anyone that performs music.

I have to disagree on that one. Musicians are people who play musical instruments. There's no doubt Mariah has a good voice, but is she someone who is going to sit down and play me something on the piano? Probably not. She's not a musician. Good vocalist? Totally. Good singer? Yep. She can probably arrange a song's vocals quite well too. She might even write songs from scratch, coming up with a melody and a lyric. But it's her producers and session musicians that are playing on her albums, not her. She's not in the studio laying down a bass track, then a percussion track, then a keyboard part, then a guitar part. She wouldn't even know where to start. She's no musician. She's a lot of things, but she's not a musician. Fuck, Britney fucking Spears sat at a piano for 30 seconds once in a concert, would you call HER a musician? Of course not. Anyone who did would be guilty of trying to spite those of us who say otherwise.

"Musician" isn't some general term applying to anyone who is part of music, no more than "Kleenex" is about every tissue, or "Xerox" is about every copier. Kleenex is a brand. Xerox is a brand. Musician is a role. To use it in a general sense cheapens the very nature of the title and those who have that gift.

It's okay if Mariah or Kanye never sit down and play guitar. Some people don't have it in them. Their gifts lie elsewhere, but they are not musicians.

Composers are songwriters, whether it's an orchestral piece, or a pop song. Conductors are arrangers by title. They might be a musician in that role, but a Conductor proper isn't a musician. He's leading the pack, not playing with them by hitting notes or making percussive sounds.

Call it what you will in me, but I'm guarded about the term "musician", and who it applies to. Maybe those who don't play an instrument or write music don't get that. I understand that, but don't question those of us who do. I'm not a rapper, but I talked in one of my songs. Does that mean I can call myself a rapper? Of course not. That would be stupid. I'd be overstepping my bounds.

It's not about sounding smart, it's about knowing who you are, and what goes where. I know Nas isn't a musician. I know Mariah isn't a musician. I know Prince IS, as is Jimi Hendrix, George Michael, Duran Duran. But Ludacris???? Pffft, not even close.

of course she is

Mariah is like MJ to me: She may be able to play one or two instruments (he definitely could, I'm not sure about her), but their concentration in the studio and onstage is not them being instrumentalists, but rather being vocalists, arrangers, writers, etc. Whatever people define "musician" as being, this thread seems to be only about musical artists who primarily and proficiently play/study instruments. (Otherwise, Michael would be my #1. smile)

To those who say singers aren't musicians, that is false. The voice is an instrument. You can earn a college degree in music in vocal performance. Choirs exist in music schools. Opera singers are highly trained musicians. Pop singers may or may not be highly trained musicians. Rappers are likely to not be trained musicians or virtuosos and some may be digging the bottom of the barrel in the musical realm but they're still musicians. To say someone is not a musician because they don't play an instrument is nonsense. That's about as valid as saying that you're not a musician if you don't read music or don't know music theory. Also, there are musicians that are theorist and composers but don't really perform and aren't that good at an instrument. A musician is anyone who can create music whether through an instrument, their voice, or on paper.

This is all false.

A musician pertains to anyone that creates music. It maybe through singing, rapping, songwriting, composing, etc. Basically, through the whole creation process of music anyone that contributes to it in one way or another is a musician.

I'm sure you know what the definition of music is and the prefix of musician is -ian which means "pertaining to or from". So no, a musician isn't only an instrumentalist. Therefore, Mariah Carey is a musician, Kanye West is a musician as well.

No need to act all self-righteous lol Just about everyone knows that a musician doesn't only play instruments. Maybe, you should look up the definition in the dictionary or better yet - learn more about your profession.

I'm sorry but I don't agree at all (and I'm a professional instrumental, trained musician of over 40 years)--the voice *is* a musical instrument. My sister is a professional vocal coach and that's the FIRST thing she teaches. That's why so many vocalists damage their INSTRUMENT, because they don't treat it as such. A vocalist can be very knowledgeable about music--key signatures, chords, harmony, etc, but they don't have to be proficient at playing piano, drums, and guitar and such. I know many who are. But they are still MUSICIANS.
