I remember watching it and would swear on my life that when it was first broadcast it even ran with a SUPER that read Artist of the Millenium Award. Then I think after the flack they got because of the award they decided to change it.

Normally I reject conspiracy theories, but I think MJ probably did his "I'll turn up if they give me an award" and either MTV of his people told him he was winning the artist of the millenium award - thus the prepared speech.

All things aside, it was a ridiculous award to have anyway, and when there was a bit of instant flack thrown MTV's way they changed it saying Michael must have misheard.

Funny how after his death they had it back up on their site saying he was awarded it.

yeahthat

There's no way that whole fiasco was a misunderstanding. I always thought this was tied to MJ's public disagreements with Sony and Tommy Mottola. Just another way to make Michael look ridiculous so that people wouldn't take his other comments seriously.

I remember seeing or reading that somewhere before that show back then too. hmmm

That's very true. MTV DID advertise it like that back then. Then it was changed...They made him look silly on purpose.

it made no sense to bring him up there and hand him that lil cheesy thing for his birthday, all they had to do was say happy birthday michael. they did all that to embarrass that man, i sure thought he was getting some kinda award because thats how it looked.

And here's another incident that really made me suspect that the industry is messing with him. Remember the 2006 WMA awards. The audience thought that he was supposed to sing that day, but it turns out that's not the case. In order to not disappoint his fans, he sung "We Are The World".

Why is it always someone else who gets the blame? MJ came from backstage and bumped in to the wall as if he had just got threw sippin on some Jack Daniels in the dressing room. Maybe he was a little tipsy and thought he was getting artist of the milenium and did not quite understand what Britney was saying.

He was most definetely tipsy before 2001 MSG concerts on that red carpet with Liz Taylor slurring his speech. MJ got his drank on alright.

And STILL got criticised lol So much planning goes into these things, I find it very hard to believe no one explicitly says this is what is going to happen. I still don't understand why anyone thought he was going to perform as he didn't have anything to promote. It was just the WMA trying to hype up their show because otherwise no-one would have paid any attention to it.

As for the VMA's; MTV did what they did, because MTV is all about being POPular, and at that time mocking Michael was just that (and repetition it seems; Jack Black did a sketch on it the following year). Least he got some love the next year at the BET awards, probably one of the last times everyone saw MJ truly happy on stage (and damn he looked fine in those jeans!).

Believe it or not, I thought Michael was attractive until 1996. I didn't mind him white and with the thin nose. It was different, but still attractive. I had no snobbery about his surgery, hair, or makeup, and I didn't mind him changing, as long as he stayed attractive. I paritcularly liked how he looked in the Bucharest DVD. Very beautiful. nod

But whatever was goin on with his face when Invisible came out? I just couldn't... sigh

I actually thought he always looked attractive, when I saw promo pictures for Invincible I thought I was finally getting over my crush. Then when I watched the 2001 MSG show I realised I was always going to be attracted to that man, probably because he did look so different and unique.
