Maxwell...EMBRYA

I notice that Maxwell's EMBRYA CD gets ignored compared to his other albums...what do you all think of that CD?

My favorite Maxwell album, period. Don't care what others say about Urban Hang Suite, Now or BLACKsummersnight (not that I dislike those). There's something about the vibe on Embrya (and the obscure lyrics). Luxury: Cococure is my favorite on that album... pure groove bliss.

I just got it on Saturday. I don't dislike it... boxed

I got tix to the Jill Scott/Maxwell concert in Philly in June, and I realized that I only owned the 1st one.
I borrowed the latest one from my Dad (yes!), and ordered "Now" and "Embrya".

I have to get back to you...

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

It's a bit long, but it's still up there as some of the best work in the past 10 years from an artist.

It's definitely one that you have to listen several times before you get it, and it's worth it. I'm listening to "Know These Things: Shouldn't You" right now. cloud9

omg, eek
my favorites too!

And though you cause my callin,
And though you know I'm haunting
And though you smell I'm crawlin,
And though you taste I'm stalking

You still ignore me watching every move babe
Every move babe

On you babe

And though you taste I'm stalking,
And though you smell I'm crawlin
And though you know I'm haunting
And though you cause my callin,
You still ignore my atmosphere on you babe
On you babe

Word! I swear if this was on vinyl, I would have worn this joint out so much it would be skipping by now. It's so hypnotic and smooth, you can't deny that GROOVE. Gets mad spins whenever I listen. I've used it well... cool

I LOVE 'Embrya'.. Only second to 'Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite'(and waaayyy better than 'Now' or 'BSM'...
I love the 'aerial' atmosphere in it (the synth layer and his breezy falsetto just give me goosebumps: Good for lovemaking AND weed-smoking too lol ...). I think it's his best work VOCALLY speaking... That voice just soothe me..
My favorite tracks are "Drowndeep" - "Maybe You" and...

(Just found ou there was a video for this one few weeks ago!! My favorite from the album)

it's true. nod it's "Gestation: Mythos". there's not much singing; it's more of a poem. it sets the mood for the entire album though.

Yes. You can buy it on iTunes, and Rhapsody. If you put your CD in a regular CD player, cue up track 1, then hit the Rewind button, as if you're scanning for an earlier part of the song (opposed to Previous Track or Next Track buttons). Most CD players will scan into the negative numbers. It's just over 3 minutes long. Your CD player should ring -03:15 or so. It's considered track :00 in the CD jacket, if you take a peek.

Embrya is the only maxwell cd i own. have heard the others in part or full and i believe this is his best work. extremely cohesive and sophisticated. at the time, it was panned critically by many, most noticeably VIBE. they felt it wasn't "accesssible" enough and lacked "radio friendliness". i think maxwell was asserting himself as an artist and giving us a heads up not to pigeonhole him and that he wasn't in this thing for Billboard, etc. i love the way he lets the band play and the songs build. his albums are just that, ALBUMS. These Things is arguably the most beautifully written and sung songs in the last decade.

Totally with U on this.

'Embrya' and 'Urban Hang Suite' R both timeless albums. I don't find myself listening 2 'Now' very much.

I liked "Now" too, it had some pretty good stuff on there, but compared to the first two albums as well as the unplugged album, it's Maxi's weakest album to date, IMO.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I don't think it's a perfect album, but there are several great moments on there. Very smooth and soothing album overall.

Unfortunately, I think Maxwell's albums have been getting steadily worse with each release. So I think 'Embrya' is quite good. smile

But your logic would dictate that Embrya is worse than Urban Hang Suite.
