ORG MIXTAPE PROJECT: Bboy87: The Overimagination of A Young Romantic

Listen here: http://8tracks.com/jaywon...g-romantic

Introduction....
As a kid and teenager, I moved around alot, resulting in me becoming painfully shy. I spent much of my adolescensce writing songs, reading, and most of all, listening to music. I was definitely a dreamer. I tried to make this mix with my dreams and experiences (and dreams of experiences) as a teenager, Several of these songs were part of my playlist or would've been part of my playlist at the time. Not really trying to show my eclectic side or what I've been listening to lately....just a glimpse of me as a teenager and now as a young adult....I hope you like it

1. Lupe Fiasco- Sunshine (Lupe Fiasco and Soundtrakk) (2006): Born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco from Chicago, Lupe Fiasco is one of the
more progressive artists in Hip Hop today. This album track from "Lupe Fiasco's Food and Liquor" centers a bout a chance meeting at a party
that turns into something more. Experiences like the one described in the song was one I wish would happen to me, but being the shy and quiet kid that I was,
it wasn't meant to be for that day...

2. Windimoto- Please Don't Let Me Leave Alone (Trackademicks Remix) (2007): Based out of Chicago, Scorpeze and Sean Haley began working together in 2005 and are based in Deep House,
with influences ranging from Frankie Knuckles, Larry Heard, Michael Jackson, Steve Hurley, Prince and others. This particular track features Phonte Coleman of Little Brother and Foreign Exchange fame under the moniker
Victor St. Clair. From "The Travels of Windimoto"

3. N.E.R.D.- Run To The Sun (2001)- From Virginia Beach, childhood friends Chad Hugo, Pharrell Williams, and Shay Haley released their debut LP in 2001, blending
Hip Hop, Rock, R&B, with a hints of Funk. "Run To The Sun", about wanting to take your partner and leave everything behind, has been a personal favorite of mine
when I first heard it back in 2002.

4. Darien Brockington- He Will Break Your Heart (2006): From his album "Someone To Love". I wasn't too sure about including this song in the mix because I was going
for a smooth and melodic approach but I began to remember hearing this song in 2007 and how it perfectly described my feelings the day I heard it.....maybe a bit TOO perfectly.
Remembering my initial reaction along with the feeling of being the "nice guy" and seeing the girl you want with another guy is a very common situation when you're young and looking
for love, I felt I HAD to include it

5. Go West- Goodbye Girl (1985): I've always been a fan of 80s British pop acts and Go West is no exception. This song in particular is a favorite of mine. I was either going to include the original or the remake by up and coming artist 1 O.A.K but because the latter doesn't have much
dynamic (although I'm very fond of it), I felt the emotion Peter Cox exudes in the original, I know I made the right choice.

6. Carlitta Durand- Doug's Funny Love (2010): Carlitta Durand, a 24 year old from Minneapolis, has been generating buzz in the indie R&B scene with her collaborations with Nicolay, Little Brother, and 9th Wonder. This song is from the concept mixtape,
"The Doug and Patty EP", inspired by the early 90s Nicktoon about preteen daydreamer, Doug Funnie, his imaginary world, and his crush on the prettiest girl in the school, Patty Mayonnaise. Without saying too much, the lyrics can be considered autobiographical for me.
and because of how the lyrics relate to experiences I've had, it got a place on this mixtape

7. Slum Village feat. Dwele- Closer (2004)- From the group's album "Detroit Deli", and the first album after member Baatin (RIP) left the group. I had stumbled upon this album a year ago when listening to this mix compilation titled "The Backstroke Series" and was blown away, not only by the production but also by the guest vocals by Dwele.
The chorus "There's something I wanted to know, can we get closer?" is a simple plea for intimacy and love, which anyone with strong feelings can understand. The verses although very "playa" esque, coincides with the
chorus of longing for that particular someone: their touch, their embrace, their love, their affection.....

8. J*Davey- Finer Things (2006)- From the EP "The Beauty In Division" by the Los Angeles based electrosoul duo who STILL haven't released their major debut album. Slow and Smooth, this reminds of me of seduction and wanting.
Everyone knows that feeling that with love,
lust also follows. You think of it, you dream of it. You imagine exactly how you show that particular person how you feel about them.....

9. Mos Def- The Panties (2004)- Dante Terrell Smith-Bey, better known as Mos Def, is one of the most ambitious figures in hip hop in my opinion. This song speaks to
the same subject as "Finer Things", which I put before this song to make it somewhat as a "Act 1" of this 2 part daydream. From the album, "The New Danger"

10. Crystal Kay- My Everything (2005)- Crystal Kay, a multicultural R&B/pop singer hailing from Yokohama Japan, released her first album in 1999 at the age of 13.
This particular cut, the english version of her album track from "Crystal Style" was the B-side to the single "Two As One". The production reminded me of the smooth stylings of
The Isley Brothers, which may some agree or disagree. The lyrics deal with someone trying to get their love to understand their feelings and how much they mean to them, although
with problems in a relationship, those feelings may be briefly forgotten

Lots of newer stuff here. Somewhat of a change for the mixtape crowd.

I'm majorly backed up, but I look forward to listening to this.

This is a nice mix, since most of the songs are in this decade, they sound like a smooth evening groove mix. Good job Bboy.

Nice mix. smile Good to put on when you just want to chill & kick it or even while getting ready for a night out.

Don't Let Me Leave Alone: I like the smooth vocals against those kickin' beats. It was a nice contrast where you don't know whether to sit back with some wine or get that booty on the dance floor.

Goodbye Girl: I hadn't heard this song in ages! Such raw emotion delivered.

Doug's Funny Love: Wow. I've never heard that song. Loved it & used to love the cartoon! Oh those feelings of yearning for the one you love.

The Panties: This has got a nice groove to it that I am truly diggin.

My Everything: Lovely voice. I think this song was a great way to end the mix. Such beautiful lyrics. I'm interested in hearing her sing in Japanese now. smile

My cuts on the mix was "The Panties" by Mos Def and J*Davey's "Finer Things".

Go West's "Goodbye Girl" is a classic. Go West was the kind of act you couldn't "color". nod

1) Sunshine-Lupe Fiasco. Nice track. Nice and breezy opener. I like this one
2) Don't Let Me Leave Alone (Trackademicks Remix)-Windimoto. Too modern LOL. It’s OK though.
3) Run to the Sun-N.E.R.D- I hated the Pharrel era of pop/rnb more then the current Timbaland one LOL. I like the guitar on the verses though. Is that a sample LOL. Other then that, I don’t like it much. I don’t dig the vocals on the chorus, but the verses are OK though. Certainly a grower.
4) He Will Break Your Heart-Darien Brockington- Nope LOL. Sounds too modern again. Sorry again LOL.
5) Goodbye Girl-Go West. Suddenly, out of nowhere we are back in the 80’s LOL. And boy how 80’s it is lol Iam a fan of Go West. Own their first 3 albums (missing their 2nd remix album though) and own a best of aswell. Their debut was OK (preferred "faithful" though), and infact, their songs for OST's contain some of their best work for me LOL ("Never let them see you sweat" "One way street" and of course "King of wishful thinking"). Anyway, always dug this song. Great choice!
6) Doug's Funny Love-Carlitta Durand- The play on words in the title is the best thing about it for me LOL. I don’t dig the production at all. Too jazzy or whatever.
7) Closer Slum Village- Again, abit too jazzy/lo fi/underground, whatever you call it, but I do dig the chorus though. Nice track.
8) Finer Things-J*Davey. Nah. Waaaay too jazzy and lo-fi. Sorry. Catchy enough chorus. I ain’t gonna lie, most of this sorta music I do not like LOL.
9) The Panties-Mos Def- nope LOL. Can’t get into it.
10) My Everything (english)-Crystal Kay. Love the vocal on this. Such a nice change of pace from the last couple of tracks LOL. Sounds old (70’s). Again, I wouldn’t usually listen to this stuff, but this is a cool track, even if the verses take abit too long to get to the chorus (a minor quibble). Nice simple and clear production. Abit long maybe

1 - Sunshine - This reminds me how hard it must be sometimes for a boy to love a girl. Love hearing poetic musings for a rapper mushy

2 - Don't Leave Me Alone - I love the unguarded heart. Open and vulnerable. I need you.

I have been a fan of San Francisco House. Is this guy a local? I hear similarities in the production and sounds. Not that this is house music but there is a feel that makes it feel like it's from the same family.

3 - Run to the Sun - LOVE this vibe. Would love to hear this song sung by a straight out sanger!. Love the lyrics but this song is groovin and love that too. What's up with that "eh"? Just to rhyme with "yeah"? lol

4 -He Will Break Your Heart Did she break up with you? sigh Oh no, heffa shows up at the end hammer lol

OK, total sidebar but I had facebook open and thought I was toggling back to the 8 tracks and saw my cousin's name and thought Oh my god, the guy who sings this song has the same name as my cousin! eyepop lol

5 - Goodbye Girl And here I thought this was going to be all romantic but it's really sad so far sad sound pretty typical for one of my mixes lol

Ok, WOW, the change in production/decades caught me off guard but it's nice to hear that singer I yearned for earlier. Although not quite as throwdown as I would prefer.

6 -Doug's Funny Love That stupid ass autotune Cher effect disbelief This girl can't sing? lol Ok, listening to the lyrics and this mix is full of longing sigh

7 -Closer - I like this one musically.

8 - Finer Things love Love LOVE LOVE this! See, don't need that stupid ass autotune to make a great track! This is my favorite song by far.

9 -The Panties I just LOVE the way he utilizes that old school sound. I love the way he uses sampling. But that title lol Love this on the heels of Finer things.

My Everything Well alright then. Let's end with some SINGING! clapping This is a very sweet and tender song. Makes me wish for a dark room with candelight, being in love with no limits on what tomorrow will bring sigh

Let me say I think that cover is Precious! love love2 Sweet young love cloud9 It was refreshing to hear rapping without the total degredation of women, the glorification of crime and weaponry and the sacrificing of the community for the sake of some stupid asses personal gain clapping

This mix made me nostalgic, remembering the days when I used to hang in East LA. Different vibe than over on the Westside lol : This mix was kind of depressing. But it's nice to hear something from a cute young boy that isn't about T&A but about that place inside that still needs to be loved touched I think this was a great addition to the mix-off for the sound that you brought to it. I dug this mix very much smile

The singer is Phonte Coleman, member of hip hop groups Little Brother and The Foreign Exchange, and hails from North Carolina. You should hear the original mix, which is more House-esque. Windimoto does a lot of house and fusion inspired tunes

My story behind this song..... lol I liked this girl who was (still is) one of my best friends, but after it was revealed that I had feelings for her, she started dating a guy who was a dickhead, and that hurt pretty bad. He's changed and I've become friends with him and she and I are still great friends. We've never talked about me liking her...but we both know

lol I wish that there was a mix without the effect on it because Carlitta has a beautiful voice. I had another song of hers that I was going to put here but when I really listened to the lyrics, I could relate to them and knew the choice I had to make. Here's some more songs by her

1) Sunshine- Very cool mellow track. I know what you mean about wanting random stuff like this to happen to you in real life. I'm not a big fan of Lupe, but I do like this song.

2) Don't Let Me Leave Alone - Okay, this is very modern and cool sounding. I kind of like and kind of don't like how the vocals don't seem to match the tempo of the music lol

3) Run to the Sun-When I got this album, I initially considered it one of my favorites off the album. Although, I've heard his singing called weak, I still like it. This song makes me want to hold hands on a sunny day.

4) He Will Break Your Heart-His voice reminds me of Case a lot. This song makes me mad at ll the girls in the world that ignore the 'nice guys' to chase jerks lol If I had hot nice guys pursing me, I would not waste time chasing someone who'd break my heart.

5) Goodbye Girl- OMG, this mix so far, is painting you out as a very sensitive guy Jai! razz Do you need a shoulder to cry on?
J/K, this is a nice 80's slow jam, but this is just a tad too sappy for my current low mood. I'll revisit this one another time.

6) Doug's Funny Love- Well, this is very new to me. This has a really different sound that I can appreciate. I don't love this right away, but it does make me curious to hear the rest of the EP since it's a concept album.

7) Closer Slum Village- Again, another sweet and sensitive track mushy ....Can I clone you bboy and give copies of you to all my girlfriends? I like this song very much. I first heard it while sitting in the backseat of my friend's boyfriend's car as us 3 were coming home from a concert. They looked so in love, and it was a sweet moment...To bad they didn't date that long. Oh, and I like the line "There's something I wanted to know, can we get closer?" I have felt that way a lot. Not so much physically closer, but just closer.

8) Finer Things- Not one of my favorite J*Davey songs, but definitely still good, and it fits well with the vibe here

9) The Panties - Mos Def is one of my favorite hip-hop artists. This song is A-Okay with me

10) My Everything (english)- - You have been famming about Crystal Kay for years now, so I'm glad you included this so I'm forced to listen to here. This track does not sound at all what I expected her to sound like. She has a much more soulful voice than I thought she would. This sounds like it should be getting played on my local oldies/slow jams radio station lol
If you will, so will I

I listened to this last week, but I didn't respond. Don't ask me why, because I don't know. lol

I really enjoyed this mixtape bboy. It has such a nice groove. Plus there are a couple songs from artists that I know and from albums I know, that I didn't particularly care for at one point, and for life of me I can't understand why. confuse Nonetheless I love it, plus it's got my boy LUPE!! woot! highfive
