New York's Hard Rock Café Hosts Thriller of an Auction
November 19, 2009

Four months after his death, the legend of Michael Jackson is still larger than life.

The King of Pop will be the centerpiece of Media Icon's Auction to be held at Hard Rock Café New York in Times Square Nov. 21. Julien's Auction, who will be overseeing the event, has collected an impressive array of items that represent some of music's greatest landmark moments.

Fans and serious collectors can bid on such historic pieces as Jackson's first white glittered glove worn during his monumental "Billie Jean" performance on 1983's Motown 25 television special ($40, 000-$60,000); a black "Bad" tour bondage outfit ($8,000-$10,000); a drawing of Charlie Chaplin done by the singer at the age of nine ($2,000-$4,000); an autographed copy of three gold Thriller singles ($600-$800), original handwritten lyrics to "Beat It" ($2000-$4000) and a costume Jackson wore at the famed Apollo Theater in 2002, his last stage performance in the U.S. ($4,000-$6,000). Bidding prices are suggested, with a portion of the proceeds going to various charities.

Martin Nolan, Executive Director at Julien's Auctions, says interest in all things MJ is at an all-time high. "Michael Jackson has a very loyal fan base worldwide," he explains. "We've just done four continents in four weeks touring the highlights of this auction. Certainly since Michael's death, while he is the King of Pop, he's become a truly legendary status who takes center stage with Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, and John Lennon as highly collectible and great investments. If you own something of Michael Jackson today, it will increase in value."

But the collection is not just limited to Jackson. At a Nov. 17 press preview, items ranging from a Beatles ' Sgt. Peppers outtake photo ($400-$600) and a signed concert scarf from Presley ($200-$400) to a signature 1983 electric blue cloud guitar once owned by Prince ($6,000-$8,000) were also on display.

Darren Julian, president and CEO of Julian's says a new generation of buyers is starting to make their presence felt. "It's interesting that young people are beginning to collect more from Western pop culture," he says. "It's huge all over the world. The newer generation who were fans of artists like Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna are starting to collect memorabilia."

The Music Icon exhibition will be open until Nov. 21. For more info go to juliensauctions.com. --Keith Murphy

Janet Jackson: Family Not Naive About Michael's Drug Addiction

In an exclusive interview, Janet Jackson told ABC's Robin Roberts that her family was not naive about Michael Jackson's drug problem, saying that she reached out to her brother throughout the years, but was unsuccessful.

Janet Jackson remembers her brother and talks about coping with grief.

"I did," she said. "Of course, that's what you do. Those are the things that you do when you love someone. You can't just let them continue on that way. And we did a few times. We weren't very successful."

Jackson, who stood by her brother through the low points in his life -- the molestation trial and his addiction to painkillers -- shared her private thoughts about the death of her beloved brother in an exclusive interview to air Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 10 p.m. ET.

Jackson said Michael understood that the family's motives for the interventions were out of love.

Maybe some of the family interventions would have actually worked if every other time they approached him it wasn't for money.

Look, after the trial and during the trial, the family got the opportunity of doing it good, and doing it right. During Michael stay in Bahrein, Jermaine recomended him to go there, and he went with him. His family visited in many occasions. He was weak then, his will weaker, and easier to persuade, but where was the intervention?
After him coming back in the US - his ties with his family didn't severed, they visited him, and he visited them....

They even talked about doing the J5 concert all the time with Michael, trying to persuade him....

There were talks about the Jacksons 5 reunion, many many talks - even Janet, before the talks with AEG, and even after Michael signed with them, said that she WOULD BE PLEASED to OPEN the brothers concerts.

Now, if Michael would have been that ill, that addicted, that frail - WHY MAKE SUCH BUSINESS PLANS? Why, when he was in Bahrein, Jermaine and the Prince wanted to release albums with him? Why were they planing that J5 reunion, trying to persuade Michael to give in? Why making plans for touring, for reuniting, for collaborations? Even Janet was agreeing, last year. Where were the REAL CONCERNS, the real INTERVENTION?

Jermaines the most in denial out of the whole family. Hes the one that likes to pretend the Jacksons are perfect and sweeps everything under the rug, just like his parents. He knew. He justs putting up a front like he always does.

What I got from Janet wasn't that MJ was addicted to drugs or a junkie, it was that he had a dependency to them. I think Janet really cared for MJ but her other siblings may have had other agendas. And La Toya is one to believe lol. Jermaine is definitely the one in denial.

for my Brit heads, who recalls the Latoya interview on channel 4, the Devil's advocate presented by Darcus Howle?
She was wicked on that, in a negative term, and the audience slaughtered her!
Well i know that was time ago and MJ most likely forgave her, but what sham that was.

that's what i'm sayin'. don't get it. you're concerned b/c you think he's addicted, but not so addicted that you expect he would be well enuf to get on stage? what about the kids? if the family (and nanny grace, according to deepak chopra) were so convinced of mj's addictions, witnessed them, whatever, how hard did they try for the sake of those kids to get mj to get help? and when?

for the records, we have meseareau and raymone bain stating that at least in the time they knew him, what turned out to be the last 4-5 years of his life, they did not believe he was addicted to anything. plus, you'd think that if he was addicted that would have been an issue in his custody battle with debbie rowe right after the trial. maybe it was, but it doesn't seem like it.

Poor Mickey. You can feel his pain.

As for the Janet interview, it´s hard to judge what she said about Mike cause she didn´t get into detail. I hate when peole touch on a subject like that. They should either get in detail and say exactly what happen and not just touch the subject. For me, it would have been better if she avoided talking about it completely. Well, hopefully, the police investigation reveals more.

This drives me crazy. I'd rather people say nothing than a few tidbits here and there but I knew the interview would be that way.
