What I said about the BET Awards on my MJ Fan Club Page
Alright, the BET Awards was a big let down last night.
I thought it was gonna be a big thing, it wasn't.. I saw NeYo, Jamiee Foxx, and Ciara, New Edition.. that's it. I thought it was gonna be bigger.
I think they payed more tribute to the O'Jay's and Don Corneilus.
Me personally, I never liked BET[i'm black and that really shouldn't matter]but I thought since Michael's death they would have been a HUGE thing, and it wasn't..
I did not see Janet, I turned it off by then and watched J5 Amercian Dream on TVLAND
I hate BET, Period. They should have just did their awards and made a diff night for MJ
But the reason I am "upset" is because Debra Lee said the ENTIRE night was going to be for him, and I guess I was just mislead in false adverstiment.
ALSO I really don't care if people message me saying, "OMG! He just died they already had plans for the show! So rude, be grateful they did something!" This isn't a unknown artist dying, he is HUGE! I was extremly disapointed, period. It doesn't matter how last minute it was, they should have done better. They are a big company and i'm pretty sure they did last minute things before! I don't care if he died OF the show! That was totally embarrassing.
BET is known for doing "big" things. Ugh! What do you think?
BUT thank you NeYo, Jamiee Foxx, Ciara, and New Edition for being the 3 hours of the MJ Tribute. Jamiee loved his outfit! Those pants made him look short!
And BET, shm..
ALSO! I wish they did a seperate tribute because when Drake and Lil Wayne perfomed that DISGUSTING song, I was done. I wasted 3 hours of my life, NOT EVEN becuse I turned it after a while, they were seriously pissing me off!
Beyonce came on stage I don't even think her ass was speaking in English half way through the performace! I was fucking confused to what the hell was going on with her, I though she was gonna sing Halo or something, I don't know..
BET should have got it together, period. Doesn't matter if he died 3 hours before it was to air, DEBRA LEE out her OWN mouth said the entire show was dedicated to Michael and.. I was mislead FALSE ADVERTISMENT! Don't say one thing and don't follow through, that's really crazy!
All they pretty much did was play his songs when they were about to go on commerical, show pictures. THEY LET DON TALK MORE THAN JANET! HIS SISTER! AND THEY ARE CLOOOSEE!
AND IDK what the hell Don was even talking about! I was mad! Still am!
Everyone is the world knows atleast ONE song of his songs, all they had to do was line the artists up had them pick one sang it, dance!
Again, I won't watch BET, stupid!!
Jia on YouTube wrote made a vid about it.
YES! I SAID IT!
[You know how long I been on ya? Since Prince was on Apollonia.]
R.I.P Michael! Sad, the only time he was in peace, was when he wasn't alive.

Although I like Jamie Foxx as a comedian, I felt his comments at the start of the show about Michael being a "BLACK" man and him belonging to "US" were un-called for and very separatist and IMO racist. Michael was black yes, but we don't OWN him.

clapping

I thought I was the only one that thought this way...

Anyway, I just felt the whole show was bad and not a very good tribute show. I enjoyed Ne-Yo's performance, but all in all I just got the feeling that most of those in attendence don't really understand the importance of MJ's contribution to music. Maybe it's just me but I got the sense that some of the people there were kind of nonchalant and weren't really into the tribute.

Yeah, the show just seemed very trashy and ghettoish. Tiny And Toya? Really? Is this really where black culture is headed? I'm not expecting something upscale or anything like that, but anything's gotta be better than this...
• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

BET, in general, sucks. I hate that fucking channel, there's nothing positive about it's just trashy, ghetto negros running around with very bad tributes. If had the power to get rid of that channel, I will because it's a digrace to me other black people. rolleyes wall

Jamie Foxx is an asshole if you ask me. After his sitcom, I pretty much ignore him and his so called talented singing.

It could've been structured properly

They're owned by Viacom, they have access to the vaults. They could've added clips of The Jacksons Variety show and other performances right before commercial breaks and at the ending

And as always Beyoncé had to "steal the show" by performing her song in that overblown fashion. Her behind should have kept it simple and sung a MJ song. If you ask me, everyone who peformed should have, just for one night, sung a J5 song or a MJ song, not sing their own songs. I mean this was suposed to be MICHAEL JACKSON tribute.

But maybe that was for the best. I wouldn't have wanted to see Soulja Boy or Wayne doing a MJ cover.

I completely agree with you. And the thing that's sad is that there are people, both black and white, who believe that BET is represenative of authentic black culture. That's what pisses me off! But that is a whole other topic for a different day.

I'm more than a little pissed with TVOne also! On the radio, in Detroit, they've been hyping a "Tribute To Michael Jackson", that is a "Can't Miss" tomorrow at 8pm! Yet, when I checked their program guide on their web site...it says they'll be airing the "30 Year Anniversary Special". The one that Whitney Houston was on looking all ANOREXIC! WT Bloody F Hell? confuse
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

The BET awards don't air here but I watched a clip of Foxx- WTF?

Judging by the background it was awful.

The way I would have liked to see it: The way the oscars were in 04- Black and White with hints of color- in MJ's case RED etc etc.

I know it's just a clip but it was sad.

Drake Addresses BET Awards Debacle, Performance
July 2009

Every Girl" singer/artist Drake has just become the first person to come forward and speak of Sunday's controversial performance with Lil Wayne at the BET Awards 09'.

The performance, put together prior to the shocking death and subsequent tribute to Michael Jackson, became a subject of much scrutiny -- mainly aimed at BET earlier this week.

The scrutiny, due to the fact that Lil Wayne's daughter and other teenage girls were on stage while the rapper was using immense profanity and sexually tinged lyrics, has now been addressed in Drake's fresh interview with Complex Magazine.

In his sit down with Complex, Drake takes on the backlash, stating: "That, actually—to be honest—was a terrible idea that I’ll never do to myself again. But I was being pressed from different areas to perform, and I think what really happened at the BET Awards is with the passing of Mike, the climate really changed, as far as the award show goes. I don’t think it called for us to perform “Every Girl” and “Always Strapped,” and I think it was an award show filled with tributes and music and these genuine heartfelt speeches. And to sort of climax out of a very tongue-in-cheek point, and then people misconstruing Wayne’s daughters and her friends coming out on stage."

While addressing the BET performance, Drake also confirms that he did indeed injure himself and was thus sitting on the stool for that reason alone. But it is Drake's response to a question that involves BET's planning (Watching it at home, the BET Awards seemed to be a mess. Did it seem that way in person?) that is most interesting:

"Well, I can only speak for my portion of it. I had asked for something very specific for my performance and none of those were met, as far as production value, so… I understood my situation, as far as sitting in one place, and figured there was a way to make it interesting. But when I looked around and noticed that none of that was going on, I kind of just realized that it was going to be a loss for me. But at the end of the day, it is what it is."

For any parents and other viewers offended by the performance, Drake says "To anyone who was offended, my personal apologies, it wasn’t intended to offend anybody."

In related news, Drake has signed to Lil Wayne's Young Money and will release his anticipated debut later this year.

Lil Wayne has not issued a statement in relation to the BET Awards show but has canceled a multi-city/country European tour planned for this summer.

You know, the more I think of it, I truly believe BET would have been able to pull together a better tribute, even in so short and stressful a time span if our current BET stars actually had some real talent to work with. I mean, if you think about it, could you have imagined a star of Michael's magnitude passing between the 1970's-1990'? This was before we got all lip sync autotune isolated choreographic movement obsessed in pop& r&b music. If this would have happened during the 70's, 80's, or early 90's you would have had a plethora of multi-faceted artists who would be up to the challenge: learn new lyrics and music to a song you've never performed, recite a respectful 2 or 3 tribute sentences, optional choreography, and it would have been an extravaganza worthy of Mike's cultural memory. The bar is set so low these days for what it takes to become a music and cultural phenomenon in general society, is it any wonder that this show reeked of dumb assed-ness?

I know people were ragging on New Edition because Ralph's voice wasn't in New Edition- Michael tribute condition circa the 1980's, but I honestly identified with the energy in their performance that I just couldn't with Kerri whatshername and that little Ciara girl. something in their work ethic just clicked with me somehow that reminded me of a former time...even though(outside of Johnny) their not the most elastic of vocalists.

BEST PERFORMANCE !

cool

He started off shakey, as if he was nervous from the enormity of appearing on a night like this smack dab in the middle of the press junket for his own record. But then he relaxed, gave tribute to Micheal, it worked. I also liked how the subliminal context of the song could change to decsribe Michael's very complicated love/estrangment relationship with the black community at large....it was touching...made ya think about some stuff, for real....

BET To Adjust Controversial Lil Wayne, Drake Performance
July 2009

Days after being lambasted for its 2009 awards programming BET says it "regrets" and will edit encore presentations of the show.

"BET Networks deeply regrets the performance by Young money at the BET Awards 09 (featuring Lil Wayne, Drake, Mack Maine, and Gudda Gudda)," a BET representative told AllHipHop.com.

The controversial performance, with immense sexual references and young girls, including Lil Wayne's daughter, appearing on stage, sparked a series of letters, complaints and on-air interviews with radio and television personalities earlier this week. According to BET sources, a number of elements were not to have taken place during the performance:

"Elements of the performance were unplanned and should not have happened."

While the network gains points for its apology today, a record breaking number of viewers watched the BET Awards 09' Sunday.

In its own press release, BET confirmed that its 09' ceremony pulled in a record 10.65 million total viewers.

As early as July 6, the next air date for the show, BET will have edited the performance with Lil Wayne and Drake.
