I'ma just say this: Although the show could have been a whole lot better, in BET's defense there were many issues, beyond their control, that occurred behind the scenes that hampered their ability to do a better show. It's really easy for the public to sit back and judge yet not have any clue whatsoever of what their intentions were and why they failed to deliver. And of course there's no way for them to publically defend themselves because they'd risk ruining relationships with various celebrities. There was a WHOLE lot going on and knowing this I'm willing to cut BET some slack. They had their hearts in the right place.

Not 2 mention 3 days 2 prep the show with the changes.

Actually just two, considering that everything had been in planning for the last YEAR. disbelief

I can't really cut BET slack. OK, the tributes seem cool but it would've been better to do a tribute show the following week rather than change everything around. That's why to me it seemed as if even if they were honoring him they were sorta pissing on him too. Just in my mind.

You're so diplomatic when you want to be. lol

What sort of stuff was going on? Have you heard things?

Lots of internal drama but I'ma keep it general on here. They plan this show for a year and everything was set. They basically tossed it out and started from scratch due to MJ's passing, so of course it was rushed. What do you expect when you re-do a show in two days that took a whole year to plan? A lot of back and forth about what's gonna happen, people agreeing to do something, then deciding at the last minute not to do what had been re-planned for them to do. Hot.mess. all around and for ONCE it wasn't all BET's fault. But the details won't come out cuz they still gotta deal with these people. But a lot of ya'll would be giving these mofos the side-eye confused neutral

It just stands to reason that to throw the production completely out of whack like that it would be a logistical nightmare. Just think, 48 hours to completely change the musical numbers, assemble and edit tribute footage, get everyone choreographed, costumed, & rehearsed, getting the musicians together with learning new music sheets, re-vamped sound checks, extra burden on the production coordinators to accomadate new press, setup new interviews, keep everything in tune with the magnaimity of what was supposed to be both solemn and a celebration. Film & tv production sucks and is a masochistic job....but that still doesn't excuse Kerri W/Hilson for not being the best choice for one of his songs, or Bouncy's tribute to Ceasar's Palace, er um, I mean, Michael lurking

A year? Seriously? Wow.

Also, I think in this instance, if you had someone like Foxx and Bouncy making outrageous demands, you tell 'em - look. this ain't about YOU. This is about Mike. If you can't deal with that buh bye. Of course, like you said they still gotta deal with these people. But just once that would be nice...

I find the younger artists much more boring. No originality like the older artists. Absolutely no real creativity.

agreed. i enjoyed beyonce despite her my little pony dress, because i actually found her singing to be pretty and not 100% over the top, and her choice of music was really nice. i liked maxwell because he came off like a true professional and for that show, it was really refreshing. otherwise, it felt like they were trying to burn their candle at both ends - awards show and MJ tribute - and came up short on both counts. they should have kept the awards show as-is with maybe one added MJ tribute, because his name was going to be all over that ceremony no matter what. they could have taken their time with a more fitting tribute broadcast, instead of slapping together what they did. and they need to know when to tell people to get the hell off the stage. i realize don cornelius is a legend, but my god. i felt like i was in a college lecture hall listening to all his pontification. and the o'jays tribute lasted way too long in general. i realize they're important, but jeez...give them their own tribute special, then! they should have been given ONE song or a 5/6 minute medley, and one tribute song by other performers. period. and they should have been given way less time to talk. let them ramble on in the aftershow or tape an interview for bet.com. something. sheesh.

and don't even get me started on soulja boy or whatever the hell his name is. that may be the worst vocal performance i've ever heard on an awards show, and there have been some stinkers.

for some reason, her outfit and all reminded me of when she was on the grammys a few years back, the joint with her holding her hand out and oversinging and the dove flying over to her. lol

I gotta say that i could really dig the direction which acts like Gnarls Barkley and Outkast have been going so far,
and missing something like that on the event with mainly the "dirdy souf" sound which is currently the hippest
thing for listeners, but imo not an innovating direction from what i've heard so far.

Exactly. People have no idea what goes into putting on these shows, all of them take a year to plan not just this one. I'm usually the first one to clown BET but knowing what they were dealing with regarding these "artists" put this fiasco in perspective for me. And that damn Beyonce needs to get gone. If her performance was not the epitome of deluded self-indulgence and inappropriateness I don't know what is. disbelief

With the 6 hour EST time dfference I usually catch the Tom Joyner Morning show online in the afternoon. BET called in maybe 7 or 8am EST to announce they were changing the show. From the interview it really did sound like the heart for doing the right thing was there, but the more I thought about it, I was like "oh lawd, Noah coulda built the ark, got it boarded and sailed the 7 seas before you pull this off confuse"

Oh, I can imagine. First they have to call and find an available date for the theater. Then they have to book the acts, plan the order in which they are going to perform, build the stage sets, place the lighting and get it set just right, do the sound checks and get the sound just right.

And that's just for the good shows. For the bullshit shows like these, they have to do even more. They have to do additional adjusting of the sound to get the volume just right on the microphones so it will match the pre-recorded track for dead asses that either don't have the talent to play live instruments or don't have the good taste to even want them. Then they have to plead and beg with the older artists to sellout and perform with these younger artists or even be in the same room with them. Not to mention the extra security and metal detectors needed for a show like this because there's a lot of dangerous thug trash attending the event...and I'm not talking about the general public, I'm talking about the artists. lol

I didn't think she was horrible, but she definitely didn't sound as good as she thought she did.

Prime example of someone who would sound wonderful if only they had singing lessons. Just b/c u sound slightly better than the drunk folks at karaoke doesn't mean you can sing boo boo.

Loved Maxwell & Ne-Yo's performances, even rather enjoyed Jamie Foxx's antics & performance. In my opinion, he kept the event from being sad, kept spirits up & the mood silly. Can't understand how "Soulja Boy Tell Em" ever got a record deal (I dunno, is sounding & looking like crap his thing?), and can completely do without T-Pain and/or Lil Wayne. Again-IMHO, and perhaps judgmentally so, their musical appeal falls way short of compensating for their appearance (Lil Wayne more so than T-Pain). The bar has really been lowered since last I checked in on the current "talent".

But again, blown away by Maxwell, and glad to see that Ne-Yo has figured this was a good time to finally lose the hats and embrace the head.

Why are there so few videos of award-performances from the BET-event on their site ? Can't find anything from the Maxwell moment or a good quality of Ne-Yo singing "Lady In My Life".
Same thing was going on last year. I don't think it will take up much space for them to upload some more footage ? Ever since last year i'm trying to find & see again online the Al Green-tribute including Anthony Hamilton doing his thang.
