If You See Natalie - Love it. Off to a much slower start than I'd expected of you, but I very much enjoy the simplicity and confession in this. I too have had Eels recommended, but didn't check them out. This track would make me take a listen.

I Wonder - I can live comfortably with this. All I knew of Blind Melon was that damned "No Rain," and while I actually kinda liked it the first 10,000 times I heard it on the radio, MTV, ad infinitum, suffice it to say it wore thin. As Herman intimated, this track does sort of confirm for me that Blind Melon was the sort of college rock band I'd dreaded expected, but I gotta admit I'm impressed with the soul in this song... And, yeah, this band does remind me of my simpler undergrad years.

Pepper - Never liked this track, but I feel cool for having known it! Actually, I don't completely hate this song -- the psychedelic guitar is fantastic. I could get off on that for hours. But I've always heard this track and just really felt bad for the bite marks all over Beck Hansen's nether regions.

Hits of Sunshine - Didn't do much for me at first, but that extended jam session made for an interesting time. I do love this sort of extended vamping, but at this very slow tempo, very subdued mood and no real standout solo to speak of, I think it'd eventually lose me unless I was experiencing it live, driving as you suggested, or (as now) making it my aim to endure the entire track.

Big Day Coming - I really enjoy the sleepy soundscape here. And I'm a sucker for feedback. Would be a great song to lock myself in the bedroom and be depressed to all day. Somehow the extended guitar session here is more attention-keeping than that of the previous song... perhaps because of the overall dreamy aesthetic and some attempt at a discernible solo. I'd love to compare this to the fast version, just to see how it might be reworked.

Jenny & the Ess-Dog - Smart wake-up point in your mix. I appreciate the pep here. This is not a song that I'd likely return to, but there is something really enjoyable here. Seems carefree -- and the work of a very normal guy just having a ball being in a rock band. I can appreciate that.

Elliptical - Another interesting shift in mood. Who couldn't be carried away by such a serpentine little track like this? I've sort of slept on this one, because for me "Elliptical" gets lost a bit in the previous track on TWHMMTMOMD, "Lovely Lovely." Undeniably good stuff, though. Meshell is golden.

Son of Neckbone - I know what you mean about the energy the Beasties can produce live -- and it's especially a treat to see them on their instruments. I appreciate your selection of this track, as it fits perfectly on your mix. I personally get the jolt of energy you mention here a bit more from anything on Check Your Head. "Groove Holmes," for example, is just essential Beastie!

Reign Dub - This almost put me to sleep. ...though I'm sure it doesn't help that it's 2:10 a.m. here.

Sweet Tides - Very nice closer. The previous track really chilled me to the point of unconsciousness, but the drum track here brought me back. Love the trippy vocals, the dancing piano, the synth line, the bouncy beat, the subdued brass. This song just kinda floats along easily and, yes, there is a certain element of transfer to a nicer, sunnier place. Quite cool. I may buy this.

eels' music is all about confession and simplicity. There are hardly any instrumental solo's in his songs. Mark Oliver Everett is an exceptional man with an exceptional family-history (his dad was a secluded scientific genius), and Everett mostly writes about them. Or about birds, and other small animals..... Like I stated earlier, I find his lyrics to be multi-interpretational, somehow I can apply them to things that go on in my life.



It was only this album I liked. After this, Shannon Hoon got caught up in 'rockstardom' and substance-abuse, the follow-ups were half-assed. I'm glad you recognize the soul of this song, that's why I like it.

I don't know, who came first? Beck with 'Mellow Gold' or the Butthole Surfers with this track??

There are so many Youth-tracks to choose from, but I didn’t want a over-noisy fast track (which I do like as well) for this mix. This song shows a different side of the Youth, it more accentuates their musicianship. I like the fact that there is no stand out solo to speak of.

If you like feedback, then you should check out more stuff from Yo La Tengo! The fast version kind of lacks the atmosphere, it become a ‘plain’ guitar-track (no keyboard!).

Thievery are very diverse, yet their style is very recognizable. Do check some of their older albums as well, like i.e. The Mirror Conspiracy




I am kind of surprised that eels comes off so well so far. I always thought that I am just one of the few nerds who likes them. Also, the fact that you put Thievery Corporation at first place pleases me as well. Not many people I know like them very much or take them seriously. And really, they’re great band to see live, if you’re into something else!

PART 1!

Eels

This takes me back, since I only know that first album 'beautiful freak' well. The only other album I know a bit is the blinking lights album, from which this song comes from. I haven't been able to love Eels' music beyond that first album, but I got to give them credit for their efforts. I think the albums contain a lot of beautiful songs, thoughts, instrumentation, I think an entire album by Eels is a bit too much for me. Too sad. Too self-indulging. A track on a compilation DOES work however. Beautiful song. Great melody.

Blind melon

Ha, I used to play some songs from their debut! Also saw them live opening for Kravitz. Kinda like the band, but I love this song! Weird start of the song, but when it does start, it's brilliant!

Butthole surfers

I knew of the name, but I've never heard anything of them. It sounds very Beck to me, because of the voice. I can appreciate a lot about this song: the way it's sung (kinda like numb by U2 (the first chorus)), the asian synth motives, the cool drumbeat, the dirty guitar sound...

Sonic Youth

Without really listening much to their stuff, I disliked this band. After all these years, that immediate dislike is kinda gone. I actually like them stretching out on the song at the end (God that song is lenghty! )! I imagined Sonic Youth to be all weirded out guitars and distortion for no apparent reason, just to be thought of as cool and misunderstood.

So, in short, not my cup of tea, but pleasantly surprised!

Wow, unbelievable. He starts singing at the end. Although there's not much change, that end does hold your attention. Nice one!

Yo La Tengo

By now, I get what this mix is about. The vibe is really catching on. A mix for narcoleptics again!

This song is hypnotisingly beautiful! Trippy songs indeed. A little change in the song wouldn't have hurt though...

This song threw my ass!

I thought for sure I was gonna hear rockin notes so I was shocked at this, the opener You are such a fucking emo paj!

OK, here is the thing that is so interesting to me. My mix is all female, mostly because I love female voices but more importantly women say the things I think and feel so much better than men. I approach music from a feminine aspect as that is how I relate to myself the most. I really like hearing a male perspective, and from a Pisces no less!



I Wonder - Blind Melon (Blind Melon 1992)

Blindsided again!

I considered them a one trick pony and never explored anything beyond "No Rain". This is going to sound morbid and freakish but this song makes me want to hear the rest of the things this man was singing. Not so much out of any kind of spectacle but to honor his memory and respect the last vestiges of his "voice" that lives on even though he's gone. Clearly, in this song, he has something to say.

I agree with your assessment on the time this was released and how it was an oddball against the current of popular music at the time. I do love the familiarity of the sound of this song, like you said traditionally influenced. You can hear it



Pepper - Butthole Surfers (Electriclarryland 1996)

I have never heard anything by them but I love the middle eastern/indian influence throughout the song and how this fleshes out musically and vocally! Totally unexpected from how this begins. Fantastic As for the lyrics, it's all abstract thought and good luck for anyone to actually tie all that shit together in coherent fashion This is a cool song though!



Hits of Sunshine (for Allen Ginsberg) - Sonic Youth (A Thousand Leaves 1998)

This is alone music I see this as perfect for falling into the borders of dreamland vs driving in the desert but that could work too. Reminds me of the Doors and how they could just zone out in a song

Did you read the lyrics on this????! You say you aren't a lyrical person but so far the lyrics on each song are amazing. And this coming from the B-side freak!



Big Day Coming - Yo La Tengo (Painful 1993)

LOVE the synths and the chords that start out this song. I am instantly feel content. Like the spreading warmth of a new day This song is extremely introspective. Love it.



Jenny & The Ess-Dog - Stephen Malkmus (Stephen Malkmus 2001)

A part of this song reminds me of Rocky's Sweet Transvestite



Elliptical - Me’Shell Ndegeocello (‘The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams 2007)

This song is haunting. It reminds me of a modern take on Bowie's Ground control. She is an alien to the one thing she craves and desires the most. Connection and love. A visitor from outer space. A captain of a lonely ship with no real destination.

I'm not sure about the backing vocal. Think it might be Lallah Hathaway but not sure. People flipped out when Guitarslinger included Jill Scott but I love this inclusion just like I loved his stealth candidate in his mix There is a lot of loneliness in this mix and I think it's perfect contextually.



Son Of Neckbone - Beastie Boys (The In Sound From Way Out 2001)

I like the Beasty Boys but I really love this song because there is no distraction, just musicianship. LOVE LOVE LOVE this!



Reign Dub - Dual Tone (DJ Kicks: Thievery Corporation 1999)

Not a fan of anything Reggae but I love the chilled out vibe of this song too. This I don't mind though cuz it's spoken and not singing. I think that's my problem with that genre.



Sweet Tides - Thievery Corporation feat. LouLou (Radio Retaliation 2008)

This is a perfect song. In a way it reminds me of Sigur Ros. The first track from the album "Agaetus Byrjun". I hear musical familiarity with that track which is one of the most amazing songs EVER. Love everything about this. It strikes my heart chords and makes me look inside to the possibilities



This mix was an absolute shocker. Totally unexpected and not at all what I thought you'd create. I really appreciate this mix more than you know. Again I want to return to your notion that you aren't a lyrics person but I think really you are listening and you don't conciously know it. This mix doesn't feel indecisive at all. It's extremely cohesive musically and even lyrically, especially in the beginning.

I find it very fascinating that you enjoyed my mix so much and yet, this is so different. You can't imagine that the 2 experiences can coexist with each other but like you had an ease with my mix, so too have I with yours. I love this a lot.

I'm going to stay away from favored musical style and known artist and go with My favorite track as I Wonder. I'm always a sucker for those who have passed. It seems to make their words resonate with gravity and I look for things to celebrate even in their sadness. If I go with my favored musical style the award goes to Sweet Tides

You nailed it to the bone! To me, this song made a lot bigger impression on me than the mumbling teen-angst of Cobain in ‘Teen Spirit’, which was being hailed as :b:the:b: anthem for the Gen X youth of the early 90’s, when this song came out. Yes, do listen to the rest of the album, you’ll hear that ‘No Rain’ was the lesser song on it. This is the only Blind Melon album that reaches this high standard, after this Hoon was to strung out on drugs.....unfortunately.







I did not really listen much to the lyrics, they’re a too poetic to me to give them a meaning....maybe it has to do with the language-barrier.....I like Thurston Moore’s voice.

This album only came out 5 weeks ago, I had it immediately. Once I had heard ‘Sweet Tides’ twice, I knew it was going to be the closer of my mix!





Thanks for your words. Maybe you are right about my subconcious take on lyrics.....I swear, it was not something that I was aware of when I was compiling. The loneliness and introspectiveness you mentioned are present, my moodshifts do influence the music I choose to listen to.....something that, sometimes, my direct environment does not see the importance to me of, it’s my own little world I create and that takes me away.
Somehow I knew you were going to be appealed to the lyrics of ‘I Wonder’, but I did not expect that you’d be so taken by them.

This has been fun, and somehow this mix has gained more meaning to me since I've put it up. Funny thing is that some of you are so surprised by my choice of songs. I do like loud music as well, same with electronic & dance music....but I really wanted to put music in here that exceeded the shallow 'party-feeling' that I also like. I wanted to take it a step further.

But then we have this! Great to hear you added some jazz sensibilities here! I can almost see someone in red trousers snapping his fingers off beat... So Me'shell. Unlike you, I have lost her after her third or fourth album... I have seen her live this year and the performance was all over the place going from relaxed to punk. So I guess this is one of the more relaxed tracks on the album. Oh wait, this is an album from 2007, this is that weird jazz album! I went to this show (must have been 2007 then also) with Herman! I really dig this track. I guess I can take her when appropriately dosed...

Beastie Boys

And then the mix makes clear we have moved on and left the alternative/trippy guitar laden realm. I don't like the beastie boys when they rap, but THIS ALBUM! Wow! This track goes to show this album is classic! Thank you for reminding me this album! Brilliant track!

Dual Tone

I understand very well what you mean about the sound. I loved the whole lounge era at the beginning of the 2000's. However I do think the sound has gotten a little old/dated. I don't listen to much lounge nowadays. To sum it up, not turned off, but kinda indifferent...

Thievery Corporation

Thievery corp, Yonderboy, St.Germain. My faves of the era. This song is very much a song which keeps it from fading in the background, while keeping the dreamy atmosphere. Great dreamy end since it reminds us of the trippy, dreamy songs in the beginning.

Weird though, this song reminds me of All Saints - All Shores (you know, that song from 'the beach' soundtrack).

Aksel! I enjoyed this mix very much! Very much surprised me as well! Not only throughout the mix, but coming from you! I don't know what I expected but something more straight forward, in your face, immediate songs, if that makes sense... Excellent job, almost every track is a winner for me!

I often find the Beastie's to be the best rappers..... But I really dig their humor and their punky background.



This track is from the Thievery Corporation DJ Kicks from around that time. It is one of the best DJ Kicks released. I think Thievery always have distinguished theirselves from the whole popular lounge-scene from that time, especially as they started to experiment with dub & reggea.
'Sweet Tides' is also proof of their staying power.....Thievery is more than just a studio-project! I'd love to take you to a show when they'll come to Amsterdam, bet you'll like it and that you'll like the energy.....not loungy at all!
