nod I think that SOTT- the song, the MPLS sounds ( Lady cab Driver, Controversy, Automatic..) have heavily influenced Electro artist in fact Prince may be considered as one of the creators of the Techno. MJ I can see his influence only on Usher, Timberlake.. not on great creative musicians.

I'd say when it comes to dancing, Michael. When it comes to being a really gifted musicain, Prince.
Some people think I'm kinda cute

He has imitators but I can's see his influence like let's say the Beatles, Bob Marley or Jimi Hendrix, I think that he's mostly famous for Billie Jean the song & video, tons of expensive video music like Scream, moonwalking and his err private life ( I'm sure that the circus freakshow will start again soon).

Honestly I've never seen MJ dance like Prince live ( the birthday Parade concert, SOTT, Baby i'm a star on the PR tour..) since maybe the Bad tour concerts, almost everything since then is mechanic 0 sensuality, no energy.

I see his influences in several ppl because of the "Jackson sound" mixture of traditional Motown structure with the edge of modern music.People like Pharrell, Fefe Dobson, Maroon 5, John Legend as in terms of sound and structure while they were influenced by Prince in terms of passion and delivery

Maybe there'd be no Janet without Prince's influence either .She says on the "Design of a Decade" liner notes,"When I was in Junior high, I was crazy about Prince's grooves.Raw funk touched the most sensitive part of my soul.Funk was what I wanted" , so lets not give MJ soul credit for influencing Janet eh !

As others have said , Prince is hugely influential as a musician and visionary , MJ hugely infuential as a performer . The artists Prince influenced
are proper ARTISTS , music makers , they can play instruments and compose and perform .MJ's influenced some too of course , but hes mainly influenced your manufactured acts , good voices , good moves , but no real musical talent under the surface.

But would Prince fans be willing to admit that Prince was influence by J5? They obviously weren't his sole influence but it has been said again and again they did influence him.

No, by Prince's owm biographers. And lets face it like most young black kids in 1969 when the J5 first emerged I wouldn't be surprise if the 11 year old Prince was inspired and in awe of the little Michael Jackson.

Because of the negativity surrounding MJ nowadays People like to forget that MJ was around well before both Prince and Madonna, they talk about all three of them as if they all emerged in the 80s at the same time. By the time MJ brought out Thriller he had already broken records with Off The Wall and had been apart as one of the most popular and influence groups for over 10 years. I just think people should remember that before they dismiss Michael legeacy.

The title of this thread ask a simple question.....and my answer is this...

If you look back at interviews, performances etc. over the years by other artists in the industry, one name remains dominant as their influence.....Michael Jackson!

To each his own, but the answer to this question is evident.

Thanks. I am not Michael biggest fan nowadays, he has done too many crazy things with his life in the last 20 years, however, I can't stand it when people try to downplay his legacy. I can't stand it when people try to make it seem that MJ emerged in the 80s with Prince and Madonna, when he was out influencing and contributing to music when Prince and Madonna were still in Junior school, (ok Michael was suppose to be Junior school too)

I think when Prince fans write him off with just being a one hit, or one hit album wonder, that smacks of resentment more than anything else. It's like they are scared to admit that long before Prince came along Michael was there doing his thing and leaving his mark, thanks to Youtube everything is there to see. now.

lol

Don't take it bad, but when it comes to dancing Prince don't even come close to MJ... I won't even try to put Prince and Michael Jackson in the same sentence.

As a dancer and stage performer Michael Jackon's only rival was himself.

IMO very very few people come close to MJ as far as influence goes and Prince is not one of them.

MJ influenced vocal styles, he influenced a music genre, he influenced dancers and clothing/stage presence/ what ever blah blah...

Probably the most multi-dimensional musical entertainer ever.

I can't believe you people. Is this a prince site or what. Mj is more influential to who but nontalented artist like usher (yuk), chris brown, justin timberlake (who seems to be distancing himself from mj though), lolyd (need I say more). If real artists like van hunt were given exposure you might be hearing prince's name being cited a lot more, As for the general public citing mj more, many of these poor souls don't know anything about music, try asking the average person what a bass is and see what response you get. Also, dancing is not music. Many of these artists would be better suited on broadway, doing musical plays, or musical movies including mj (should have stuck to doing things like the wiz). This would allow real artists to be the focal point of the industry.
Prince believes he is a musical prophet that has been chosen by Jehova to guide his fans to the "truth".

I agree. It's always the "Prince is a real artist" argument. There are SEVERAL legends who didn't play instruments or write their own material all the time. Does that make them any less of a great artist? HELL NO!

People don't cite Michael as more influential because they don't know about music is totally untrue, it's because Michael changed popular music and entertainment. The guy was making music and touring YEARS before Prince was even known, so it's funny how some(not all) Prince fans try the write the brotha off because they want to make Mr. Nelson seem like the music equal to God or something lol

Just like people try to write Prince out of music history, they shouldn't try to write Michael out either.

Two entertaining brothas who have an innate ability to make good music, and that's damn rare these days. It's all about talent, and Michael and Prince have it!
