And am I mistaken, or is Pink Floyd NOT EVEN ON this list??!!! pissed

thank God!!!!!
My turn to hate: I absolutely loathe Pink Floyd!! I mean, whenever PF is on you better stay away from me since I might get agressive.....I can hardly imagine a band more pretentious & overrated than PF. Whiny old-fart music, boring!!!

nod

Yeah, you're one of "those" people. But I always have to ask this though, because it's such a cliche: what exactly is pretentious about them? Just curious as to why you think so. hmmm

Um, a lot of the hugely popular rock bands of the 70's did long ass guitar solos. hmm You may hate them, but I just never get when people call them pretentious. It's just become the "in" thing to say about them if you don't like them, and it doesn't really seem to be based on anything IMO. What would you prefer they sang about? Gilmour may be an asshole, but I wouldn't know as I don't know him personally. Although I don't think he's overrated at all. He is an awesome guitarist. nod In my opinion of course.

Anyway, I don't hate you. biggrin I just never understood the "pretentious" tag they seem to always get by non-fans.

To me, something's really only pretentious if you can't pull it off. Pink Floyd succeeded with ease.

Sorry, I just meant a general list. Like the Rolling Stone list of greatest Rock & Roll artists ever didn't have too many surprises in the top 10.

This top ten only has 3 pre 1980 albums. No Zeppelin, Stones, Kinks, Who. It seems like they just wanted to start arguments with it.

And Oasis over the Beatles? They don't really understand what great means. Even if Oasis has improved on what the Beatles did, their albums just can't be as great or important, because Oasis is about 90% Beatles. Greatness isn't just about quality but impact, influence, lasting effect.

I know Oasis is bigger overseas than in America, but I really doubt they've surpassed the Beatles.

Ah, I see.

And I totally agree with you with everything else.

And I doody on Oasis anyway.

I love Led Zep too, but they were probably the MOST derivative band of their day... so I don't quite get your problem with Oasis... confuse

But the genius in Pink Floyd is called Roger Waters... and if he's not a genius then NO ONE qualifies for that title... do some listening/research... it'll do you no harm...

By the way... their reunion at Live 8 actually made me cry... I'm 31 years old! It was brilliant...

Zeppelin were blues derivative, especially in their very early days, just like countless other rock bands in the 60s. But they ended up setting the mold for not just heavy rock, but for blending beautiful folk-inspired acoustics with the riff-heavy sound they are known for. Take songs like Ten Years Gone, In the Light, Stairway, What is and What Should Never Be, Over the Hills and Far Away, The Ocean, Four Sticks, Going To California, That's the Way, Out On the Tiles, Celebration Day, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, etc. They are all truly original, and very much the signature Zeppelin sound. What rock bands can you name that came before them that put out music just like this?

As far as Oasis is concerned, I never liked them from day one. Just not my thing. shrug

But just for you, I'll post this pic of Jimmy and Noel Gallagher. mr.green

Zeppelin was definitely derivative in a way, but their sound was completely original and influential. It's not like they actually sounded like Robert Johnson, despite possibly stealing some of his material. Oasis actually sounds & looks like the Beatles. That's why I don't see them as original or influential. They might have written decent songs, but they didn't really start anything new.

But on a list of the greatest blues artists, Zeppelin wouldn't be above Robert Johnson, just like Oasis shouldn't be above the Beatles on a rock list.
