Arctic Monkeys is definitely 10-times more awesome than David Bowie. nod

Or not. They always just make themselves ridiculous with these lists.

Screamadelica should be higher.

Blur's Parklife should be on there.

The Charlatans' self-titled should be on there.

Parklife's not on there?! omfg I'm listening to it now actually. cloud9

I haven't looked at the whole thing yet really. boxed

edit to say it's at #89. nod

And why are there even numbers on this thing anyway? What did they get a bunch of people together to deliberate for days and finally come to an agreement as to what should be #52 and what should go in as #9, etc.? neutral

For a country with more tradition & history than America, they give more weight to recent stuff than American lists would. Rolling Stone would pick the standbys--Elvis, Beatles, Zeppelin, Jimi, Etc.

confuse What do you mean by this actually? Rolling Stone would choose Elvis, The Beatles, Zeppelin, Jimi, etc. for a list of the best British albums, or the best American albums? Because Elvis and Hendrix are American of course, and the other two British acts, so I'm confused. hmm You mean just in general? Overall great albums by anyone?

Sorry, I just meant a general list. Like the Rolling Stone list of greatest Rock & Roll artists ever didn't have too many surprises in the top 10.

This top ten only has 3 pre 1980 albums. No Zeppelin, Stones, Kinks, Who. It seems like they just wanted to start arguments with it.

And Oasis over the Beatles? They don't really understand what great means. Even if Oasis has improved on what the Beatles did, their albums just can't be as great or important, because Oasis is about 90% Beatles. Greatness isn't just about quality but impact, influence, lasting effect.

I know Oasis is bigger overseas than in America, but I really doubt they've surpassed the Beatles.

This is a problem, but it is just as much of a problem when lists (and there are many more of this type) have nothing from after 1979 in the top echelon.

You're right. There should be some in between. Some people are outraged when Nirvana is put up there with the greats (I'm not). I actually heard someone say "Nirvana is like the Doors? No way! Nobody's going to care about Kurt Cobain after ten years." He said that last year!

I actually like the spirit of emphasis on new music. It's not like I think everything in the 60's can't be improved upon. But I think this list is a bit ridiculous.

What I've come to realize is... if you can just ignore the rankings and choose for yourself, lists like these can be a good resource for music to check out.

Good way of looking at it... hmmm

I was just going to say "I am NOT looking at this!". These lists are usually way off the mark - but I have to read them, just to annoy myself. smile

I MUCH prefer Beat Surrender. NME just being ridiculously snobby as usual coupled with the just plain ridiculous with some of their positions and overrating of newer albums.

What about "Sound Affects"? That to me was their best album.

um, you know... Revolver is consistently voted the top album of all time. so, by default, wouldn't that make it the best BRITISH album of all time too? (or i'm guessing at least higher than #9 confuse )

My turn to hate: I absolutely loathe Pink Floyd!! I mean, whenever PF is on you better stay away from me since I might get agressive.....I can hardly imagine a band more pretentious & overrated than PF. Whiny old-fart music, boring!!!

And that's a relatively new phenomenon, too. I think Sgt. Pepper was the one for years. I think that's too obvious for people now. Revolver is like the Beatles alternative record.

The notion that this list is good except for the order is a valid one, except that the order is so laughable that it's hard to take any of it seriously.
