how do u feel about sharing your music collection? Has anyone ever given away (by that I mean copied) their entire music collection for someone, using their ipod or whatever? Today I copying an album onto someone's hardrive and he asked for everything. I didn't have time but that's not the point.
I have 40 gigs of music on my iRiver which is about 90% of my entire music collection, consisting of about 500 albums. That's about 8000 euros worth of music which I've poured a lot of time, thought and energy into. So how should I feel when someone justs asks me to copy everything from my iRiver onto their hardrive? I don't mind lending albums to people, they can rip them or whatever... but I have deep reservations about just giving it all away at once..I love to share my taste in music, but quite frankly I doubt they'd bother listening to half of it. Am I greedy or what? I just feel it's kinda cheeky. I'm happy to start them off with a few albums of whatever artist they're interested in but don't ask me to quadruple your entire music collectionm that just ain't fair.

when i can really feel that someone's enjoying the stuff in my music collection, i truly enjoy sharing it with them. i have a couple of friends who have come over to my place and "raided" my CDs and burned stuff on my computer to take home. i think it's great!

hmmm. yeah, some of my music collection is kinda sacred. still, if i know someone would appreciate it, i'd want them to have it to listen to.

Entire collection??? I think it would depend on the friend. My best friend and I have been sharing music with each other 4 the last 16 years, but that's him. A casual friend? I'd have 2 think about it. The older I get, the less I tend 2 care about the whole "Who ever dies with the most toys wins" attitude that I had in my younger days. I'm usually very happy 2 share what I've got, but my entire collection (as I'm sure is the case with many of U as well) would b an enormous undertaking. The only way I see this as being feasible is data transfer, and all my shit is on CDs I have bought.

Depends on how you feel about the person. If you feel this person is trying to take advantage of your kindness or is just hording music, then you should consider not doing it. If this person is genuine and simply doesn't have anything and want to get off to a good start, that's on you. Generally speaking, anything easily acquired is often lessly apreciated. Most large music collections, at the very least, have required a great deal of time (which translates into $$$ when you count hours spent) to compose. I share lots of stuff, but if someone asked me to share everything I had acquired, I would ask them "why". "Why do you want everything I have acquired?". The answer to this question is the answer to your question. How they answer you will give you the answer to whether or not you should do it.
In my opinion. | |

The part of your post I related most to kinaldo, was when you said they probably wouldn't listen to half of it. I have relatives who will call and ask for Tori or Tricky for example. When I ask what they would like to hear, they respond "oh, just copy everything for me". It annoys me becuase there is never feedback from them about whether they loved it, hated it, or even listened to it. For me, sharing and receiving new music back is a gift and an emotional experience. When I've given or recieved music from gangsta for example, there is exciting dialogue ~ an exchange of ideas about what we heard, how we felt, the dimension the sharing added to our personal musical landscape. It isn't about the time or money ~ it is about the communal relationship, growth and appreciation of the art and toward the person sharing it. Just my point of view but like Anxiety, parts of my collection are sacred and are shared sparingly. Another area I'm cautious about ~ when someone takes the time to make an amazing compilation like Gangsta's 4 disc Tori Beekeeper set or my friend Sebastian who made a beautiful 3 disc set of Dead Can Dance ~ many people want copies and I always ask the person who originally made it if they mind. Just out of respect. It works for me and I have one beautiful and diverse collection!

You can fit every note of officially released Prince music onto one dual layered DVD disc at 192. That included the madhouse stuff, every remix, 12" and bside.
You can also fit every circlulating unreleased track, or rehearsal session onto another Dual layer disc. Add a third disc, and you can capture every circluating soundboard live recording, plus the the EX+ shows, + the mpeg video promos. A fourth disc gets you every associate album and track available. Thats the mans life on four discs. I just did a backup of them all, and they sound great all stacked up! .

I usually give the people what they want when they want and they wont sit all the time
Never give them what they dont want never give too much at a time Only give them what they REALLY ask 4. When my boss said, "oh yeah The Time I love them! I wish I had a CD with all their hits on it..." that's when I did what I had 2 do. And in return I got lots of goodies from him. Like when i would say, "oh yeah I wish I had that new John Legend..." I had it the next evening Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

That's kinda selfish on your friends part.
I'm sure he must realize that you put a lot of time and money into your own music collection, and to give it all away would be foolish. A few here or there is cool. Some of the fun of this is doing it yourself or searching for other music. Sharing is cool but just asking for it???? Tell him simply-- "I don't think so!" "
First I need a picture of your mother, to verify the fact that there's not another one in the universe so supreme!!"
