My favorites were:

Jade
Envogue
SWV
Brownstone

There was another girl group called For Real.

For Real had one good track that I liked, Like I Do. There was a remix of it that benefited from a sample by the SOS Band. Good song! I really don't think a good portion of the 90's vocal groups (male or female) were really memorable. I think most of them had a decent cut here and there, but on the whole they didn't do much for me. I must admit to having a soft spot for the trashiness of Total, but in the long run the only ones that did anything for me were En Vogue and SWV.

Like I Do is a nice track off of their second album "Free" that was released in 1996. I love their debut album "It's A Natural Thang" which was released in 1994. They released the following songs:

You Don't Wanna Miss
Easy To Love
You Don't Know Nothin' (acapella)
D'Yer Mak'er

I love this whole album (great debut and they all sing lead and do it well)

It's A Natural Thang

They were either affliated or discovered by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

They were either affliated or discovered by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

Is it "Take Your Time" by Mo Thugs? Check out the lyrics below and see if you recognize them:

[Tre]
The word 'love' is a hell of a word to be sayin'
You don't know how to use it with caution
It's a death-defying game to play
And when you're thinking of the one you wanna get next to
Be sure it's a mutual feeling
'cause these are the words they'll say

'Hey, baby, you're the only one I'm on'
They kick a few lines from a slow song
having you thinking you got it going on so strong
And can't nothing in this world go wrong
They say, 'Baby, I'm yours
So go and close the bedroom door
Make sure the binds are closed'
Yo keep you comin' up out your clothes
The next day they don't know you no more
So, baby, take your time
Help me, ease my mind
Every little chance you get, you wanna do me
It's so hard to find a one-of-a-kind
And when these words are said
Don't let it get to your head
Once the lights go out
You'll hear a scream and shout
The next day somebody else is misled

Who do you love? (You have to ask yourself)
Is it someone you can count on?
Someone who's there for you
Someone who will be true
No matter what the situation may be
And are they sent from above?
This question is asked for a reason
'Cause some of them wanna play
And then go their separate ways
And hey, these are the words they'll say

[Tre]
'Hey, baby, you're the only one I'm on'
They kick a few lines from a slow song
having you thinking you got it going on so strong

And can't nothing in this world go wrong
They say, 'Baby, I'm yours

The next day somebody else is misled

[Krayzie]
Ain't never had game, I shot real, shot real
'Cause complications in your conversation
So you know it ain't real, gotta be real
So why you keep fallin' for lames and games?
Shame shame shame
How many strippings you wanna take
Until you learn the game's another definition for play?
So, won't ya ease-a your mind and block out all distraction
Take your time
Take your time
Slow down [slow down] your action
Ya see, 'cause that's your disaster

Take your time
Ease my mind (Baby, won't you take your time?)
Take your time, help me ease my mind
Every little chance you get, you wanna do me
It's so hard to find, I'm one of a kind
And when these words are said

Hey, remember Shades?

They were the group behind the ultimate golddiggers anthem "Tell Me" which would later go on to be the inspiration for LL Cool J's hit Loungin' (Remix feat. Total)

They said...

Yeah,come on Motown!
Girls help me sing it
Tell me your name
(Cauz i wanna know)
What car do you drive
(Tell me where can we go)
How much money do you make
(How can i be down)
As long as you have
(I'll be around)

Most guys they come as dime a dozen
And they always try to get with me
Don't think that i'm an opportunist
I fall in love betcha not for free
So baby tell me

(chorus)

Most guys they think that i'm a user
They think i take and then i never give
It's time for girls to make a statement
I'm going for mine, This lady's got to live
Oh! Tell Me!

(chorus twice)

If you want me
Then i must see
You'll give me any and everything that i need baby
I'll fall in love
If love was meant
Cause ain't nuthin goin' on but the rent
So Tell Me!
(chorus til out)

Shades and LL cool J both actually sampled a popular song from the 80's called "Who Do You Love" by Bernard Wright"

you took it back. Oaktown's 357 used to dance for MC Hammer and then they released their own albums. Juicy Got'em Crazy featuring B Angie B on vocals was my song. That's when the BOX was on (music channel where you could call a 900 # to request videos) and that video came on every 5 minutes. They also had that song Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah. My other song by them was Wild and Loose. The member's names were Terrible T. and Sweet LD. Tigra and Bunny were from the rap group L'Trimm - WE LIKE THE CARS, THE CARS THAT GO BOOM, WE'RE TIGRA AND BUNNY AND WE LIKE THE BOOM....WE LIKE THEM SHORT AND WE LIKE THEM TALL, WE LIKE THEM ONE AND WE LIKE THEM ALL.... biggrin

lol..I bought B Angie B's CD, she did a great remake of "I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love", she also released the pretty ballad "So Much Love". I wonder where she is these days???? lol @ Wild and Loose, I remember that guy singing on it whoa o whoa o whoooooa everybody get loose.... biggrin.

L'Trimm Cars That Go boom Lyrics (let's take a trip down memory lane):

How many kinds, where can we start?
Yeah, we like them dumb and we like them smart.
I like the ones with the pretty eyes,
Well i like all kinds of guys.
Stop. What happened, how about the ones we especially like?
Which ones?
You know the ones with the cars that go..
I hear you..
Hit it!

It was me and the posse with Bunny G
We were cruising in the Jag or the Lambourgini,
When low and behold there appeared a mirage,
He was hooking up a car in his daddy's garage.
We stopped short, did a double take,
He was looking so fly, I thought I wasn't awake.
He was obviously hooking up bass, I assume,
But then he turned a little button and the car went boom.

We like the cars, the cars that go boom,
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.
We like the cars, the cars that go boom.
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.

We like them short, and we like them tall,
We like them one, and we like them all.
They're always adding speakers when they find the room,
Coz they know we like the guys with the cars that go boom.
And see my boyfriend really knows where it's at,
He's got 50 inch woofers all along the back.
He makes a comment on going to my room,
But I'd rather stay out with his car that goes boom.

We like the cars, the cars that go boom,
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.
We like the cars, the cars that go boom.
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.

Now if your car ain't got it, go out and get it,
We like the boom and don't you forget it.
So turn down the treble, and flaunt your bass,
So your car can be heard almost any place.
Coz when you're in the street you can't go far,
Without hearing the boom pouring out your car.
So if your speaker's weak, then please turn it off,
Coz we like the cars that sound so tough.

We like the cars, the cars that go boom,
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.
We like the cars, the cars that go boom.
We're Tigre and Bunny and we like the boom.

Everybody just beep your horn
Everybody just beep your horn if you hear us,
Now clap!
Hit it!
Beep, beep beep beep beep!
Come on everybody!
Hey, hey hey hey hey!
Beep, beep beep beep beep!
Ohhh you keep saying stay the niiiiiiiiight
Just let me rock you 'til the morning liiiiiiight
It's cold outside
And much too late to driiiiiiiive
You know I need you baby

This is too funny. I have hundreds of tapes from that era and just started going through them to label and I also get excited when I come across an oldie but goodie or something I completely forgot about. Video Soul with Donnie Simpson was a must see - that's when videos were worth watching, they're crap now. Midnight Love was even better back then. Video LP was another good one I always had to check out. BET had so many good shows to watch back then. guitar music headbang

What about Ex-Girlfriend. Does anybody remember them? They sang some song about coming home and hittin' some brotha in the dome with a frying pan. The only line I really remember is "cause the e-x girlfriend ain't playin."

Y'all know what I'm talking about?

My favorites R&B girls group TLC,SWV,Jade,Brownstone,Total and En Vogue. I got to meet Dawn from En Vogue when the group were together back in the 90s. Surprise to get to meet her at the mall. She is such a sweet person. I also attended a concert when she was in Lucy Pearl group opening for D'Angelo.

I bought their CD "X Marks The Spot". I used to love their song "Why Can't You Come Home". This was Full Force's girl group. Last I heard the main singer in the group was going to release a solo album, she also lost a ton of weight. Ex-Girlfriend also sang back up on Jasmine Guy's song "Try Me".

Many in here neglected to mention Destiny's Child amongst the crowded school of R&B fish. Sure, they've had many group changes and chart-topping success in the noughties, but they're a '90s girl group nonetheless.

Video LP was another good one I always had to check out. BET had so many good shows to watch back then. guitar music headbang

Don't forget Video Vibrations and I dare say Planet Groove with the infamously despised Rachel.

I knew there was another popular show biggrin. I used to also set my timer to record "In Your Ear" mainly for the host of the show Brett Walker (talk about eye candy drooling). I also remember Screen Scene, there was also another show with Bev ?. There was also another show that came on either before or after Screen Scene...this lady would interview people and it was a 30 minute show. Teen Summit was another really good show they they took off. What the hell happened to BET??? Planet Groove was like a new version of Video Soul but not as good.
Ohhh you keep saying stay the niiiiiiiiight
Just let me rock you 'til the morning liiiiiiight
It's cold outside
And much too late to driiiiiiiive
You know I need you baby
I'm so lost without your love

Damn. That was the good old days of BET when the network really stood for something. The BEv Smith show that you were refering to was Our voices .

What about Ex-Girlfriend. Does anybody remember them? They sang some song about coming home and hittin' some brotha in the dome with a frying pan. The only line I really remember is "cause the e-x girlfriend ain't playin."

Y'all know what I'm talking about?

Just before I thought nobody would mention Ex-Girlfriend in the entire thread, Redayh saves the day....I totaly omitted them from my list of faves...them girls were bad-ass Stacey Francis could hit them crazy notes..."Why can't you come home","Your the one for me" and in 94 off of they're 2nd album "X in your sex" loved that song.....the Full Force proteges were ahead of they're time....

also got to give props to Total they had some good songs as well as hook work.

*J.J. Fad

I was just listening to their first album a few days ago. I was jammin' to "Now Really" (the Sugga & Spice diss track), "Blame It On The Muzick," "My Dope Intro" and "Let's Get Hyped." Classic west coast rap LP.

*Sugga & Spice ( two big girls,one light skin,one dark...dissed J.J.Fad)

I wish I could see a picture of this group. Anyone have?

*Def Dames (from Bakersfield CA... Set it off on the left ya'll)

Damn, Teddy, you definitely know about those west coast female acts. I give you hella (as they say in the yay) props!

*HWA (Hoez wit Attitudes)

I had a Ruthless Records compilation cassette tape with one of their tracks on it. From what I recall, it was tight.

*Terminator X. W/Bonnie & Clyde (Homie don't play dat)

I have that LP! "Homie Don't Play Dat" was the hypest cut on there! Valley of the Jeep Beats was large, y'all!

*The Conscious Daughters (bad ass duo from the bay area)

C.D. was definitely bangin' with "Fonky Expedition," but when I bought their LP "Gamers" I had to return that ish to the store and get a refund, it just wasn't bangin' like I thought it would.

Now there were some other hip hop female groups like...

Sequence (many refer to them as the first female hip hop group)

Super Nature (Salt-N-Pepa's first name, pre-"Push It." They dropped the Doug E. Fresh & Slick Rick diss "Showstoppers")
