Just out of Prince-related curiosity, what's up with Lenny Kravitz' new CD? It's only been on the chart 3 weeks, but has dropped from #14, to #55. It's a good CD, and should be doing better, I think. Any speculations on this?

I still have this unsettling feeling in the pit of my stomach that somehow the industry will downplay his success and call it "cheating." In other words, they will continuously imply that people don't want to buy Prince's shit, so he uses trickery to get them to "buy" it by bundling the price with the concert ticket.

Either way, Prince can't win for losing. Yes, he'll make money, but he'll forever have an *asterisk* by his name and the "artist who formerly could sell records...without bundling tactic."

VERY SAD indeed! sad sad

- Well, it´s ´cheating´ in a way. He didnt get to be number 3 at Billboard because of the Musicology song (it happened with Most Beautiful Girl). I want ´Call my name´ to be a hit because this way it would be an ´authentic´ way of getting there...

- Hehehe...come on...Lenny was never a Prince wanna-be.....he is one of his idols....but Lenny was a straight rocker most of the time. I would say Jimi is more an influience to him. But I admit he looks so much like Prince on his new cover.

He first wore G-strings on stage to get people's attention, he's always been trying to get people's attention, do you have any idea how many times I have explained to people that he's NOT a froot loop for changing his name, & then surprisingly they look at me like "Wow that was kinda smart". this is no surprise to me at all, & I don't blame him, I hate to say it, that little brain of his scares me of what it's capacity is. No mountain too high for him, No valley to low for him. I'll bet he plays some good mind games with his women.

Do you really think Prince actually cares about Billboard? If he does, isn't that a little contradictory to the "artist" mentality? I'm all for making money and I'm sure he is too. But if you look at it, you can make the case that it's actually Columbia that is pushing for Billboard to count the CD giveaways and not so much Prince himself (at the very least Columbia ain't mad at it). Applying traditional industry practices, Prince gets paid off the concert takedown...as usual. Columbia gets paid (directly and indirectly) mostly on the distribution of the CD and it's sheer numbers...which is what Billboard charts reflect. Prince has enough fans and enough music to have 10 completely different 2.5 hour concert sets and would STILL pack every single concert for the next 20 years. So he really doesn't need record sales, he needs fans. He literally could stop recording music today and still take down huge cash by perfoming his catalog alone AND he could still keep it fresh (retire all of the pre-1986 tunes and I'd still be there...you?). So is he a genius for the marketing ploy? Yes and no..."yes" because few have done it before and apparently no one has ever had it lumped into Billboard...and "no" because he probably truly could care less about what Billboard does. Plus there's Catch-22 at play in the industry: you can't get radio play without showing significant sales and you can't get good shelf placement in a record store without significant radio play. In a way he wins twice. He's jump-started that cycle by creating instant sales. He nurtures an already deep fan base and boosts "sales" by giving the current music away (mimicking the distribution and exposure that only a machine like the old fam at WBR can provide). The distribution partner is happy because of the inflated chart #'s. The ensuing platinum plaque from boosted sales means FAR more to the distributor than it does to Prince because they can just add it to their track record (they can call it a successful "comeback"), hang it on their wall (in the waiting area no doubt), to woo the next artist into a deal (muhahahaha!). So who's pimpin who?

I cant believe the hooplah about an included CD!!!
When I heard about this tour I was prepared to pay a couple hundred dollars for a ticket
just like those madanna fans!

Then when I go to buy my ticket and discover it was only a mere $75 I peed my pants.
And oh goodness when the Ticket lady told me that I would receive a free CDas well
I literally thrusted my six foot body over the counter and practically had a lesbian encounter with the poor woman! Her response"Damn Prince has some intense fans"

So I wonder why is there not an article on the great bargin that P is giving the fams???

Ok so I will have 2 CDs WHO CARES! Im giving one to a friend of mine who is just discovering her love for Prince. Introducing him to someone else is my way of sharing the love and thanking Prince for all the good music!
If you will, so will I

Who gives a flying f*ck how the industry spins it. From it's very inception the music business has ripped off artists, especially the black ones, so their credibility and opinions are pretty low in my book. Prince came up with a great idea, Billboard agreed to it, and now that it's been successful beyond anyone's expectations, some folks want to complain.
So if you want to worry how some people are gonna view Musicology, fine. I'm gonna continue to celebrate the fact that a unique performer came up with a unique idea, that Musicology is a hit even without the concert CDs, and that after more than 26 years in the music business Prince is still going strong, even when so many people thought his career was dead and buried.
So, without further ado: dancing jig

Girl i think that u are reading my mind!
U,ME,WE!....2FUNKY!
