Come on, it is plainly obvious, Prince was utterly friendly towards Mel all the time.

i have to agree with you completely. Prince was having fun. you could tell he was just happy to be face to face with Mel, Mel Gibson. Mel seemed a little put off or nervous, about what, i'm not so sure. almost like he was dad that didn't let his children listen to the early Prince stuff kinda thing . . .

and as far as Prince slapping hands and plopping in that seat - merely a cue he was trying to hit, when the band stopped, in his mind, he was supposed to be in his seat . . . how did he know they were going to be standing there as a greeting crew wink

I don't imagine that Prince, given his personal theological doctrine, would not respect Gibson for swinging for the fences. Plus, Mel spent his own money to make it...something Prince knows a little about!

I'm suprised to see you are the only one who has mentioned the fact the Mel Gibson seemed nervous as hell. Also, when P went to sit down, Mel Gibson slide waaaaay over so he wouldn't be anywhere close to prince once he sat down. During the interview, they kept cutting to Mel Gibson's face and caught some really weird, nervous type expressions. That dude was acting mad strange if you ask me.

It did seem kinda weird. I don't know if he was being genuinely friendly, or sarcastic. I hope they got along for real. It would suck if Prince was an asshole to him.

I heard Prince ate a whole lotta beans before the show, just so he could cut "silent but violent" cheese the whole time he was next to Mel! That's the real reason Mel scooted over so far on the couch! Prince was rippin' more than one type of funk!!!

prince can be an ass easily enough but i don't think this was one of those times. people forget that there is a green room and p and mel probably chatted back there. for all we know, 's comments were in reference to an earlier conversation. regardless, i didn't get any feeling that there was arrogance...just playing around.

That was classic.
I think Mel was just upset that he had to give up his seat. I didn't really like him from the moment he sat down... cocky, somewhat arrogant and those K-mart socks had to go.

I haven´t seen the Leno show since it no longer gets broadcasted here in Germany...NBC Europe turned into GIGA, a 24 hour interactive computer geek channel, which means no more Leno, no Conan O´Brien , no Friends...but, to get back to the topic, I don´t think there´s animosity between Prince and Mel Gibson. Morris Hayes once told me a story about how he met Mel Gibson in a hotel elevator when the NPG was going to do a show ( aftershow, if I remember correctly) and somehow Mel got invited to the show...I didn´t really ask him if it was because of Morris or Prince, but Mel obviously enjoyed it.

In a pre-show commercial, Prince, Mel and Jay all stood together as Jay announced the show's line-up. Prince took the big, white hanky out of his own jacket pocket, placed it in Mel's and smoothed it out a la Jerome Benton. If there was any beef between these guys, it certainly wouldn't have looked like this.

Prince was just having a good time and being playful. If he seemed awkward, I think it's because sitting down and being interviewed along with other stars in front of an entire studio audience is a new and odd thing for him. Did you notice how restless he was and how many times he "drank" from that mug? He was simply being silly and quick-witted; and any comments he made toward Mel were geared at comic relief and ice breaking.

I don't like Mel much, but he isn't stupid... and he certainly ain't a punk. If Prince (of all people) tried to start some crap with him on national TV -- especially after the week Mel's endured -- he'd certainly have stepped up the fight. As for his own discomfort, yes, I sensed that a tad bit. He did move WAY over on that couch! But let's face it: Mel's a meat-and-potatoes man, and Prince is a pretty freaky little guy. lol If there was any poking fun between them it was only because they're sort of an odd pairing -- sort of like the playful Christopher Tracy in the company of the stuffy French bourgeoisie.

I dont think he outright said anything insulting, but he treated Mel to a little sarcasm and awkward humour, perhaps at his expense

Why do I think this? Well..

When P danced over to the stage, he plopped down into his seat cutting right past Mel not greeting him with a handshake or anything.

Later when Jay referred to Mel, Prince was pretty condescending to him. In mock awe, he exclaimed "Mel Gibson, whats shakin' bro? Hey what you doin after the show?"
to which a confused Mel said "I dont know, dancing I guess"
"Wanna, uh, maybe catch a movie?"

It wasnt very funny but it was pretty sarcastic.

It could mean 1 of two things i think
1 he was expressing his disagreement with the movie...hey this is a total assumption
2. he could sarcastically be referring to the treatment Mel has been getting in the press.

What do y'all think?

He then tried to sort of slap his hand, the back of his hand whern it rested on the couch, and when Mel responded, Prince was already facing the other way!

I thought the song was OK but the performance kicked ass! his outfit, the moves, the dancing, and his overall good mood were amazing. Band was tight.

To be honest, Musicology sounded very bland, by the book funk. Sorry, I wasnt very moved, but it wasnt bad

bat

I thought he was being cool to Mel. It didn't seem negative at all.

I'm gonna go along with you guys and say that Prince didn't diss Mel and was in fact pretty nice and respectful to him. I have said it once and I'll say it again. I love Prince to death, but just because you are in religion now don't go snubbing your nose and looking down on people and trying to send them straight to hell, because whenever you get through with it, you the so-called holy person is probably taking your ass to hell too. I don't think Prince would like it if people was disrespecting him and constantly throwing up his past and I'm not talking just about the sexual stuff, but cheating employees out of money and songwriting credits and really I think the latter I just mentioned hasn't changed about him. Plus we're not around Prince 24/7, not even his wife. Who's to say he's still not screwing around with other women and then tryin' to put on a front like he is so saved from all that now. I personally don't like the religion, if someone is a JW fine, but don't think that's the ultimate denomination that gets you a ticket to heaven. We all have a judgement day for everything we have done in our lives and Mel Gibson felt like he had to tell a story and I have no desire to see the movie, but I don't have a problem with it. As far as the violence or anything else it ain't no worse than The Sopranos, Sex in the City, Queer as Folk, Oz, or even alot of primetime shows. If you can deal with that, you can deal with The Passion of the Christ.

I just saw the performance, and I don't think P was dissing Mel at all. He was just kidding around with him. He caught Mel off guard when he asked if he wanted to check out a movie, but that's all it was. As for Mel scooting over on the couch, he just looked like he was getting comfortable. He never once seemed like he was freaked-out by Prince, and P certainly didn't seem like he had anything against Mel.

Now some folks have tried to say that Prince would take issue with Mel over the subject matter of the film, since it clashes with his JW beliefs. I don't think this is so at all. Prince was a huge fan of kevin Smith's "Dogma", which contained MANY things that don't jive with JW doctrine. I think P repects when an artist is addressing these kind of issues, even if they aren't 100% in line with his own.
