Yeah, they're cool mixes, the 2013 ones.

I just feel that it's tinkering with Prince's vision. If anyone was to do a new mix of an album, it would be him. But, sadly, that's not going to happen...

Not really... Sometimes Prince had different people do mixes of his albums and he just chose the one he liked the most to be released...

If there is than that would be perfect for the Purple Rain deluxe!

We got just that with the tracks on Crystal Ball that had previously appeared on bootleg.
Some of them had circulated in excellent quality, but still, the official releases tended to sound better.

Most of CB sounded godawful. Brickwalled to death. One of the abundance of reasons to dislike that set.

I like the production, especially the big phat beats. Even though I consider it his most uneven album, it's by no means his worst. Phuk.

The production and mixing even are perfectly fine, its just the overuse of compression in the mastering process for these recording that are to me imperfect, even the tune CB has some audible clipping to me

I dont know if this is an actual reel of Prince music or a phot example of what can happen, but reading about how reels of audio recording are gone forever with no backups makes me sick to my stomach. I really feel like crying just seeing this picture. Damn, if some of this greatness is truely gone forever it's a damn shame.

Militant wasn't Moonbeam being mentioned by Susan Rogers on that documentary on the Vault a couple of years ago before April 21,2016?

To me it was sounding like a hype promotion and that it was going to get a release before his death.

That's definitely not the case.

Susan had had nothing to do with Prince for many years before that documentary, and she's been semi-regularly talking about her time with him for years, and regularly brought up songs like Moonbeam Levels (and Wally too).

In fact, at one point following one of her talks, Prince had commented on it, saying "Susan Rogers knows nothing about my music".

There's no evidence that Prince had pulled Moonbeam Levels out of the vault in recent years. And given the conversation I had with Manuela recently plus the version of the track that ended up on 4Ever, I strongly suspect that the original tapes are damaged beyond repair. Even if Prince had thought about resurrecting the track, he likely would have re-recorded, as with Xtraloveable, In A Large Room With No Light, If I Could Get Your Attention, 1000 X's and O's.......

Thanks for that response.

I was wondering about that whole episode and the whole thing just looked fishy to me then and even more so now.

Let's be clear. Bootleg quality of studio recordings is still superior to bootleg quality of live stuff. Some people I know go mad for the non-soundboard live stuff - personally recorded- with the talk shit audience bits between songs and tinnier than Tin-Man-on-steroids sound quality.

Point being, noone should complain about sound quality of Moonbeam Levels or any other song not properly mixed. And that's why I asked question about 'damaged beyond repair'. Bc that doesn't say to what extent confused

I don't think any tapes are going to be in that state. They're only in that state found in the scrap yard.

I'm 99% sure that's a standard, consumer-grade 8-track tape from the 60s/70s. Probably rotted like that sitting in someone's basement or garage.

Pro-grade analog audio recording tape, especially the 24-track variety that Prince would have used in the 1980s, is much larger and is typically stored in metal or plastic cases.

I did a quick Google search and came across this page on baking tapes for archival purposes. It has a photo of a 16-track 2" tape that went through a flood and doesn't look as bad as the image posted earlier in this thread:

damaged 24-track tape

BTW, another image on that page shows that same tape fully restored.

Yup there it is. So now, does someone want to give Comerica a call? and tell them the full rundown on how you preserve P's tapes, starting with his earliest releases. wink

Sharon Nelson filed an affidavit yesterday saying they the heirs are pissed off with Comerica and want to get rid of them because they were promised control/input and as of their last meeting, Comerica are now stating the heirs will have no say in any business affairs. She's also saying Comerica told them they had an entertainment division and that now doesn't appear to be the case at all.

Total, total mess. neutral

I'm really getting the feeling that actually putting in the work and doing what needs to be done (ie, preservation, proper appraisals, and all that stuff) isn't at the forefront of these people's minds right now.

But like I said - good people are fighting and trying to get their voices heard. I'm trying to make sure our voices are heard, but frankly there's way too many chefs in the kitchen and they're all arguing with each other instead of cooking the food.

The struggle continues......

The star wars fans went and made their own despecialized version of the original trilogy on digital ... concluded george would never put the work in .. came out pretty good ... rumour has it disney would finally release the OT in digital but still hasn't happened ... star wars is far more profitable than prince and it still has not happened .. i'll keep my faith in the bootleggers to supply any real treats or cleaned up releases ... we will see if wb can change my mind with pr deluxe .. but with no tracklist in sight it could be brutal .. the fans are where its at in preserving the legacy .. the industry is a shit show

Oh for fuck's sake, what is it with you lot? Why do you lot always think up these ridiculous conspiracies? We've had numerous soundboards all through history; were those the result of WBR sending time travelers?

.

Sheesh, IIRC several of those recordings have been circulating for years. I bet "elite" collectors are still sitting on plenty of goodies that we've only heard rumors of or only have in deliberately downgraded quality, and occasionally some of them slip out.

Because the bootleg labels are seeing an opportunity? There have been numerous bootleg releases of PR-era soundboards in the past 20+ years, did you ask this question every time?

.

For years we only had audience recordings of Prince's 26th birthday gig and severly altered excerpts from the soundboard which sounded so bad it made you wonder if they were really from a soundboard source. And then one day, up pops the crystal clear soundboard. Shit happens. Stuff leaks.

.

Years ago we suddenly saw a flood of soundboard recordings from the Japan Lovesexy gigs. Shit happens. Stuff leaks.

.

The PR soundboards that are about to be released aren't all new, IIRC one of the Nassau gigs and the Purple Bowl rehearsal has been circulating for a long while. It's just that now a label decides to cash in on the upcoming PR deluxe. Seeing some kind of absurd masterplan by WBR in this is just ridiculous. As if they've got anything to gain by such leaks.

Wow, really? 1984 he had the number 1 movie, album, single(s) and teh start of a tour that went on in 1985 and he was even everywhere outside of the US except for concerts. 2004 only had musicology and a tour. I would think Prince gained more fans in 1984 than in 2004. Maybe he was more succesful in finances in 2004.

He gets a free pass. Everyone else has to abide by the rules.

This is one of the org rules :

Be civilized
Don't create offensive, vulgar, obscene, threatening, abusive or excessively profane posts. Do not instigate, engage in, or encourage 'flame wars'. If you insult someone "jokingly", be prepared to have it not interpreted that way by the Moderators. A good general rule: "criticize ideas, not people." Any language which encourages conduct that would constitute a criminal offense is grounds for immediate account deletion.

No, they weren't asking a simple question. They were claiming WB were behind the upcoming bootleg release of several PR soundboards.
