Quincy Jones Interview- Prince, MJ and John Nelson

Quincy Jones has given a new interview in which he gives mostly rehashed recollections of the potential collaboration with Michael Jackson.

A couple new bits of information:

*Quincy states he was friends with John Nelson. I find this extraordinary. Someone should do more research on John N. and his musical history and imprint on Prince. His music should be recovered.

*Prince gave MJ "Camille" gifts

Which as a Prince fan I find hysterical. biggrin Oh I am also so glad Prince walked away from that crazy ass Bad video.

"According to Jones – who was a good friend of Prince’s father, the jazz musician John L Nelson – the rivalry dates back to the very beginning of Prince’s career, first surfacing during the recording of former child-star Jackson’s first hit solo album.

"[Prince] came by the studio when we were doing Off the Wall in 1979," says Jones. "Prince looked like a deer in the headlight – clothes and shirt off – but he was always competing with Michael."

Yes, Prince walked in the studio buck naked.

"In 2002 Jackson named his youngest son Prince Michael Jackson II. Jackson died seven years later, while Prince passed away in April 2016."

Prince was MJ's grandfather's name it has nothing to do with Prince Rogers.

A recently uncovered Prince interview with Chris Rock revealed that it was the idea of Jackson singing Bad’s opening line, "Your Butt is Mine", that put Prince off the duet.

"Now, who is going to sing that to whom? Cause [he] sure ain’t singing that to me, and I sure ain’t singing it to [him]," Prince told Rock.

This was broadcast on VH1 it was not recently discovered.

"For the first time, Jones confirmed the swipe may have been deliberate.

"‘Your butt is mine’ – that was designed for [Prince]," added the producer."

No surprise both Jackson and Quincy were trying to make Prince look like an idiot.

What kills me is he was working on "Sign Of The Times" which blows "Bad" out of the fucking water.

"Just think, with a subtly edited lyric, the duet might have gone ahead – and an otherwise unimaginable musical moment would have been documented forever.

"That’s why I wanted to do it," adds Jones with a smile. "

Unimaginable and embarrassing for both artist.

Lol...that was the right career move. Prince was too smart for that.

Another interesting recollection was that Prince was in the studio with MJ during 1979's Off the Wall. Sheila E was a session drummer for that album. She claims that she should've received songwriting credits.

Maybe Prince was around Sheila did not mention that in her book but I doubt he was standing around with no clothes on looking amazed. The second Prince album is really underated and very good. Of course he would then come out swinging with Dirty Mind.

It is going to be something when Q dies and we get to see all his bullshit on display. I know of some fucked up stories about him.

This is new, and a sickly humorous twist when you consider Prince acknowledged during an interview the "character" might be a hermaphrodite. All the while he was calling MJ "Camille".

.

Please spill the Tea on Q! - he always seemed like a Don Corleone manipulator.

The bit in bold I'm not sure I believe. I don't think this is the first time it's been mentioned that Prince went to the studio to see MJ while he was recording... It's never been mentioned that Prince walked into the studio naked.

Surely if that happened then there should be a number of people who were working at the studio talking about "That time Prince visited MJ naked"?

There was definitely a bit of rivalry between MJ & P - mostly coming from Prince - but it was only ever professional. There is that Press Conference where a reporter asks Prince "Hypothetically who would win in a fist fight between you and MJ" Prince jokes with the audience that the reporter was a plant, and Prince planted him himself... the crowd gets a bit lively and you can visibly see Prince's expression change from jovial to feeling bad about how the conversation turned.

Quincy versus Prince - so many incidents, at least a few...

Do u girls & boys remember the Chris Rock interview with Prince, 1997?

ok.... I do like MJ's music (some of it, 1979-1995), and I own the Bad album, the Cd-reissue with bonus where Quincy Jones tells the story about the "your butt is mine" lyric - based on the VH-1/ Chris Rock Prince-interview from 1997.(?)

Quincy, so skilled a producer, but why was he on this edition of Bad, telling this (briefly) ?

Hmmmm... confuse

Back in '97 I found the Chris Rock interview so funny, Prince really had a great sense of humour - AND it did make Chris Rock laugh, at the song "Bad".. haha, memories. lol cool

-/The buck naked comments are me being sarcastic. I don't believe for one minute no one would not notice Prince walking around with no clothes on. This is Quincy being stupid. The rivalry was on Mike's part did you not hear what AGE live people said Mike wanted to do 50 shows to top Prince at the Q2. He told Kenny Ortega if he stopped working God would give all the ideas to Prince. Prince said he never saw Mike as a rival because other musicians were his rival. The press conference was Prince joking with a Howard Stern staffer that planted in the crowd and Prince filled the script on him and made a joke out it. It was cool.

Hi everybody - I read this article this morning...for whatever reason it did not feel authenic to me. I had never read before that Prince's father was a friend of Quincy Jones. Has any one else seen this reported in the past? They were both jazz musicians ... but how did their paths cross? I find it difficult to believe that this fact would not have been widely reported through the years since it would provide an interesting link between Prince and Quincy Jones. And, I would think that this was a connection that Prince would have tried to capitalize on... I'm interested in what others think on this topic.

/-Could be Q going senile or the paper making crap up. I do remember Etta James saying that she used the Prince Rogers Nelson Trio when she had gigs in Minneapolis in the 60s.

I agree.

I think Q may have "known of" John Nelson back in the day, but I don't think they were friends on any great level. I'd even go as far as to wonder if Q deliberately manipulated MJ into being spiteful to P in retaliation for some slight Q might have felt from John Nelson when John was already an established musician and Q was the younger guy trying to get into the music business. John is 17 yrs older than Q. If John somehow kept a young Q out of certain circles way back when, then maybe Q was still harboring ill feelings that poured out onto P when he was starting out. Just a thought.

I think Q noticed P early on after P got to LA to do his first studio work and had an agenda that included trying to get P on his roster, but while MJ was malleable and fell into Q's plans, thankfully P never did.

I also think that when P first appeared on the scene MJ had a natural curiosity about what he felt was his competition, and Q encouraged MJ's feelings and turning them into a manufactured rivalry in MJ's mind.

I think P, being a newcomer on the scene might have been drawn to the idea of another young Black male on the rise as a possible friend, but was dissappointed that a Q-influenced MJ often tried to make P the "bad guy" to the Q-invention of a MJ "good guy. I think over time it did turn into P being petty towards Q/MJ but I think it was in self defense mostly and in retaliation for feeling that P was the potential butt of spiteful Q/MJ inspired actions. I do think P's feelings got hurt as he realized that while he was respected by other musical peers he wasn't going to be included in that particular group as a friend/colleague, that he'd never be considered "one of them". Yet, he was also very connected to friends from Minneapolis and had plenty of folks in his world.

Eventually, I think P realized Q/MJ were "mean girls" and although on some level it still stung a bit not to be able to be "one of thier circle", he also realized that he didn't really want to be one of them.

I think if Q had been able to get P to cooperate in the same way Donny Osmond did back in the day when he was popular, we would've seen P and MJ presenting awards together and doing appearances together as "buddies" and I think P realized early on that all that would've done was make him look bad/make MJ look good and distract P from his artistry.

I'm glad P never fell for the Q/MJ attempted manipulations and "collaborations". They were on vastly different ends of the musical spectrum and I think that P's involvement with Q/MJ would've watered down his art.

As for Q saying P was in the studio "buck naked", that's something that an older person says about someone dressed in a way they don't find approprite, such as a gal wearing a mini skirt and a top that shows cleavage an older woman might comment that the gal was "naked". It's not to be taken literally, it's said for shock value.

Just my opinion.

By the early to mid-60's, Q was the producing and arranging albums for Sinatra and Count Basie (Sinatra/Basie has "fly me to the moon" on it.) . Q worked on the soundtrack for iN the Heat of the NIght. At one point, he was also living in France in the 60's. I would not imagine his and John Nelson's paths ever crossed in the early days.

That being said, I do think he encouraged the rivalry between MJ and P. I also think asking Prince to basically play the Wesley Snipes character in the song (the person who gets "your butt is mine" sung to him in the first line of the song--implying MJ's superiority-- was just insulting. NO wonder Prince turned it down.

Plus, Bad is a stupid ass song. I like Mj but I have always hated that song because it is so NOT suited for MJ. Hell, I don't even know if Prince could have pulled it off completely without a wink or a bit of irony. MJ, to me, was never convincing as tough or overtly sexuall. Sweet, ephereal, joyous, romantic--sure. Tough and sexy--hell to the no.

Good points ^^^^! P was too smart for all that and although I think a collab between him and MJ would've been nice to see, it would only work if they were genuine and not just set up for publicity! Glad he always did things his way.

Erm...With all due respect...(Yeah, I've been watching The Godfather again)...P has said in interveiws many times when asked about any competition between himself and...the other one...that P was his own competition.

I think in P's early days that upon seeing a cute young Black male lots of folks immediately thought P would become some sort of counterpoint to MJ but after awhile, and certainly after P WON THE OSCAR FOR PURPLE RAIN, folks realized there simplay was no basis for competition because the only the points of comparison being that they both were cute young Black males who sang. Other than that there really are no other commonalities about them. Not socially, not in thier values, not in thier life experiences, not in thier families, not thie heights, not even thier eye color...although as time went on MJ did catch up with P in complexion...(Relax, it was a joke to lighten the mood...See what I did there?)

Anyhoo, they've only ever had being cute young Black males who sang in common...ever.

Before I tell the story, I must humbly admit that I was not in the studio the day Prince came for a visit. I don't know where I was or why I wasn't there that day, but for whatever reason I missed the visit. I saw Prince again a couple years later at the Warner Film Studios, but I never had the privilege of meeting him. So, let me briefly tell the story, keeping in mind I wasn't there for the final scene.

Michael and Quincy had wanted to do a duet with Prince, and it was discussed many times in the studio. The song was originally recorded at Havenhurst (Michael's home studio), and it was in pretty good shape when Quincy and Bruce took over the project.

Quincy has stated that he envisioned the fight scene in the short film featuring these two incredible musical rivals (yet friends) tearing it up with the choreography.

The word "Duet" was all over the original track sheets and tape boxes. In fact, it sort of became known as the "Pee Duet". No, that is not a mis-spelling; some of the work tapes and early mixes were called "Pee Duet".

I seem to remember that as part of our security measures very few people were to know that Michael was talking with Prince about doing the duet, so spelling it "Pee" might really throw a curious guest into a quandary. Hey, this was way before Twitter and smart-phones, so our security measures were a bit more unorthodox.

Anyway, the tracks were prepped, and Prince finally came to listen to the song. (Again - I am working on a Taco Bell commercial or eating an In-N-Out burger this particular day.) I'm sure Michael played it for him at 122db spl, and I'm sure the room was rocking. I'm sure they got along swimmingly and I'm sure it was a very memorable day for everyone there.

After the playback, Prince looked at Michael and said something like, "This song is strong enough on it's own, it doesn't need me." There have been other speculations about Prince not liking the lyric "Your butt is mine", but I can't say for sure.

I CAN say that when I finally did get back into the studio later that day everyone was very excited about Prince's visit, and how cool he was to be around.

I wonder why Prince later said that he did not like the "your butt is mine" lyric since he said it would be a hit without him. MJ and Prince both admired, liked, respected and inspired each other.

Oh brother, no it was not. There was friendly competition between both. Also did you hear what Prince said about MJ after he passed? Prince said that MJ pushed him and showed him he could go further after Michael sold out 1 million tickets in one city with 50 dates. They are two great talents andgeniuses, please dont pin them against each other. I am surprised Luv4u did not lock this thread with how anti MJ she is. She is slipping. razz

Anyhoo, they've only ever had being cute young Black males who sang in common...ever.

lol smile

I never said they had anything in common. However, some of the comments made by MJ and Prince in later years show that there was some small friendly competition between the two although they respected each other but I agree the media rivalry was completely contrived and orchestrated by the press. I think its cool that the two biggest black male acts of all time were both motivated and inspired by each other to do better and more, nothing wrong with that. In fact, its admirable.

I don't sense any malicious intent from this guy, but the fact remains...He wasn't there.

and it wasn't the last time he reached out to Prince to work together. The discussed it for HIStory and I think Invincible. With all the quotes that have come out these past couple of years, you can tell they at least got along well with each other

and mjcarousel, remember how Prince went off on Tatiana Thumbtzen for talking about MJ in the press? lol

Who knows what Prince really thought of the song, video concept and duet idea. He was probably being polite. The bottom line is that he turned it down. Seems like the right choice. He could smell GIMMICK a mile away. I can't see him dancing in a choreographed West Side Story fight against MJ...to a song he didn't write.

When did he ever do that in his entire career? Not Batman, the Muppets or any other strange collaboration.

[Edited 1/5/17 8:14am]

Oh brother, no it was not. There was friendly competition between both. Also did you hear what Prince said about MJ after he passed? -- I am repeating what Kenny Ortega said. I am repeating what the AEG live people said. How about Antonio Reid said about MJ laughing for an hour at the James Brown tape for about an hour and Jill Jones saying Mike sat Prince up at that show. I doubt they hated each other but come on they did pal around with each other. The rivalry was built up by Quincy Jones which is kind of shameful and stupid.

[Edited 1/5/17 17:41pm]

I can see how it may appear that way but I don't see that in thier comments in any time period.

Unfortunately, what I see is P being disappointed in not being accepted on his own terms by what he may have felt from early on as "the in crowd", only to get close enough to realize who they really were intrinsically and his consequent and enduring disappointment in a possible friendship.

Sorta like the new kid in school who gravitates towards a certain science loving kid in his class only to find out that the kid doesn't wanna play nice and be his friend...ever. Ok, they grown up to go to Yale and Harvard and the new kid has an astounding career as a world renowned and well respected and lauded surgeon and the other kid becomes a world renowned doctor too but never lets the new kid be his friend and uses every opportunity to be unkind.

For whatever reason, they both had incredible careers and made lots of money and were famous, but I think any respect MJ had for P was begrudgingly because P made it without ever having MJ have an opportunity to hold it over his head that it was MJ who made it happen in any way...On P's part, I think he respected MJ's place in the industry and was disappointed with the realization that they weren't gonna be friends, true friends.

I don't think this is an issue for either solo P fans or solo MJ fans at all. I think MJ fans who are also P fans romanticize that P and MJ were frends because it's difficult for them to reconcile being fans of both otherwise, but being "friendly" isn't the same as being "friends". MJ made sure that P knew that.

Funny thing is, I think P wanted to be friends with MJ early on. I even think if Q/the media had left them alone they might've ended up closer than they did.

I'm glad that a collaboration and true friendship between them never happened, though. I think either would've only served MJ and P would've ended up hurt in the long run.
