MJ's assistant engineeer Brad Sundberg posted this on Facebook shortly after Prince passed

Before I tell the story, I must humbly admit that I was not in the studio the day Prince came for a visit. I don't know where I was or why I wasn't there that day, but for whatever reason I missed the visit. I saw Prince again a couple years later at the Warner Film Studios, but I never had the privilege of meeting him. So, let me briefly tell the story, keeping in mind I wasn't there for the final scene.

Michael and Quincy had wanted to do a duet with Prince, and it was discussed many times in the studio. The song was originally recorded at Havenhurst (Michael's home studio), and it was in pretty good shape when Quincy and Bruce took over the project.

Quincy has stated that he envisioned the fight scene in the short film featuring these two incredible musical rivals (yet friends) tearing it up with the choreography.

The word "Duet" was all over the original track sheets and tape boxes. In fact, it sort of became known as the "Pee Duet". No, that is not a mis-spelling; some of the work tapes and early mixes were called "Pee Duet".

I seem to remember that as part of our security measures very few people were to know that Michael was talking with Prince about doing the duet, so spelling it "Pee" might really throw a curious guest into a quandary. Hey, this was way before Twitter and smart-phones, so our security measures were a bit more unorthodox.

Anyway, the tracks were prepped, and Prince finally came to listen to the song. (Again - I am working on a Taco Bell commercial or eating an In-N-Out burger this particular day.) I'm sure Michael played it for him at 122db spl, and I'm sure the room was rocking. I'm sure they got along swimmingly and I'm sure it was a very memorable day for everyone there.

After the playback, Prince looked at Michael and said something like, "This song is strong enough on it's own, it doesn't need me." There have been other speculations about Prince not liking the lyric "Your butt is mine", but I can't say for sure.

I CAN say that when I finally did get back into the studio later that day everyone was very excited about Prince's visit, and how cool he was to be around.

Thank you!

I wonder why Prince later said that he did not like the "your butt is mine" lyric since he said it would be a hit without him. MJ and Prince both admired, liked, respected and inspired each other.

I agree. He was pretty broken up about MJ's death....

^ Yeah true, Prince did play "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" at his concerts post-2009... in a kind tribute to MJ.... sad

However: Prince vs. Quincy Jones and MJ = always turns sour... sad sad sad

Both Prince and MJ were huge back in 1979 to 1995 (my fave time periods by them both).

But of course being a brilliant guitarist/ musician and producer himself, Prince was the biggest genius and most prolific of the two (imho, and not counting MJ-pre-1979), Prince had at least 10 brilliant albums (1980 to 1988, plus 1994/1995) - although MJ too had an absolutely amazing voice, and was a huge dancer, MJ only had 3 brilliant albums - ok maybe 4 if you count Dangerous, although Dangerous had some subpar-fillers, imho. (HIStory had some brilliant and huge single releases, but this wasn't a very good album (the new songs), so many weak tracks there as well.

I love both artists, true talent both... heart

Prince will always be my number 1 artist, no surprise since this is after all prince.org, right.....? smile

Prince 4Ever. heart

From what Quincy wanted, it would've been them having dancing against each other then together at the end.

It would've been great to see them collaborate but it wasn't the right song. Prince wasn't gonna sing on a song solely written by Michael and Michael was already having issues with Q on his input on Bad so there was a lot going on

Lol

The first time I heard the song My Name Is Prince, I chuckled to myself and thought "Well, P now has his own version of 'Bad' ".

and it wasn't the last time he reached out to Prince to work together. The discussed it for HIStory and I think Invincible. With all the quotes that have come out these past couple of years, you can tell they at least got along well with each other

and mjcarousel, remember how Prince went off on Tatiana Thumbtzen for talking about MJ in the press? lol

nod He sure did! Prince called her ass out for going to the media about Michael. I LOVED that Prince ride or died for Michael. razz Didn't Prince even ask Tatiana if she was dating Michael because he didn't want to take her out if she was? I thought that was very respectful of him. He probably assumed that they were "dating" because Tatiana groupie Thumbtzen was following Mike all over the world at every event after she was fired. lol

Also, if you read back, it's a common phrase for an older person to say that someone who is clothed but the older person doesn't approve of the clothing, they say the person is "naked".

It's not meant literally. Lol

But P definitely had a freaky soul, innit?

I think Q intended on molding P into a "Morris Day" type of stooge character for MJ to play off of...friendly rivalry where P aggresses against MJ and has temporary victories, but MJ triumphs in the end...always coming off as the "good guy" and P coming off to MJ fans and most of the public as "that darned Prince". Sorta in the same way MD is portrayed whenever P has his "Morris Day" character go up against "Prince". (I'm specifically distinguishing "Morris Day" and "Prince" as characters for the sake of performance and not the actual real life men.

But since P wasn't going for it, it never worked out.

Who knows what Prince really thought of the song, video concept and duet idea. He was probably being polite. The bottom line is that he turned it down. Seems like the right choice. He could smell GIMMICK a mile away. I can't see him dancing in a choreographed West Side Story fight against MJ...to a song he didn't write. When did he ever do that in his entire career? Not Batman, the Muppets or any other strange collaboration.

Actually Quincy talks about this encounter multiple times, in fact its a small interview on MJ's BAD 2001 special edition CD in which he discusses it lol QUINCY set up the meeting between Michael and Prince and Quincy ALSO said that Prince said that "You don't need me to be on this, it will be a hit without me" I am listening to my CD right now. I can't find this clip on youtube. As senile as Quincy is, he is pretty consistent with this Prince and MJ/BAD encounter and other engineers have said the same thing so its strange Prince would later say he did not like the lyrics. Your right, its possible he was just being polite maybe. However, I notice Prince didn't want to collaborate with Michael for WATW either. Like I said, both men respected each other but a bit of a friendly competitiveness between the two razz I don't care what ya'll say, Prince should have walkd his little cute self into that studio, swallowed his pride and sanged on WATW, I don't care if it was cheesy lol it was a beautiful song for a beautiful cause.

From what I recall, Quincy thought of Prince coming to kick Michael's ass then having them both dancing then at the end, they becoming friends and dance together. (Corny concept that Q could've kept to himself lol )

When P declined, they instead went with using the story that was inspired by Edmund Perry's death

Yes, I know the concept for the video.

My comments were about how Q seemed to want to define a "friendship" between P and MJ over the course of time.

Glad it didn't happen...none of it.

WATW was an okay song, but I'm glad P didn't participate.

That project was meant to serve Q/MJ's image as "good guys" and if P had participated on stage it would've only provided a visual juxtapoition as P being subordinate to Q/MJ in the public's mind.

By P providing a song for the album instead, it defined P as being independant of the project but supportive of the cause.

It put P out of Q/MJ puppetry.

Smart move to keep the public from perceiving P as a Q/MJ sockpuppet like the rest on that stage. I don't see WATW as an innocent charitable contribution. It was definitely a Q/MJ image construct as well.

JMO

And as we're seeing from 4/21 on, P was plenty philanthropic enough without being a part of a public display engineered to make MJ look like a "great guy".

Just sayin

I think stuff like this magnifies the comments I made earlier about a "true friendship" between P and MJ.

I think P wanted to really be a real friend to MJ and apparently tried to reach out to him, but after seeing MJ's immaturish behaviour up close...the whining...I think P was turned off.

I think P thought MJ's public persona was an act just like P's was in a lot of ways...and that in private they could be "real" with ech other without artifice...But I think MJ never let P see that "regular guy" side and...well...P got disappointed and probably bored as well.

I think those outreachings might have been genuine on some level but engineered by Q to always make MJ look good.

I also think that MJ was a bit lost in how to connect with P.

P grew up poor and very "street" compared to MJ who for the majority of his life was sheltered and rich.

P's artistry was completely different from MJ's.

I think MJ was fascinated by the stuff P did and knew he (MJ) could never pull a lot of that off, but I think Q encouraged a bit of jealousy in MJ for P, which is silly cuz MJ had a longstanding successful career, but I think it's true.

-- I am repeating what Kenny Ortega said. I am repeating what the AEG live people said. How about Antonio Reid said about MJ laughing for an hour at the James Brown tape for about an hour and Jill Jones saying Mike sat Prince up at that show. I doubt they hated each other but come on they did pal around with each other. The rivalry was built up by Quincy Jones which is kind of shameful and stupid.

ANYBODY would have laughed at that video of Prince running up on stage acting a fool lol I love Prince but he was completely out of it that night! He was clearly drunk and high as a kite in that video and nobody can tell me otherwise! NOBODY didn't set Prince up, Prince set himself up! Michael just invited Prince to perform on stage. Mike didn't know Prince would go up on stage and jump up on a stage prop into the crowd. lol lol lol lol lol LOL thinking about that mess, Love Prince but damn! razz

This incident stands out in my mind, and I don't think P was drunk or high, I think this stoopit incident was a case of "OOOh, the "popular kid" wants to play with me!"

I dunno if I beleive MJ set P up, but I do think P got over exited at the prospect of possibly being accepted by the "popular kid" and tried to show off for James Brown/the audience...to embarrassing results.

It was all so new to him and he hadn't been groomed for fame so it took time for P to mature and understand his own power/worth in the industry and that the "popular kids" aren't necessarily the "cool kids" in the grander scheme of life. Once he realized that he (P) was actually one of the "cool kids" I think he was able to settle down and relax about it all.

The only times Q engineered them meeting was during the WATW and Bad meetups.

After the Bad discussion, MJ and Prince hung out at Sunset Sound and had that infamous ping pong game, as well as hanging out at Paisley after Michael performed at the Met Center in '88.

Bobby Z and Michael Bland both talked about them getting along and MJ sending tapes of James Brown and Sly Stone to Prince to watch.

The girl in MJ's The Way You Make Me Feel video had gone to the tabloids about Michael in '93 or 94 and was confronted by Prince

"Prince and I lost touch for about four years. We met by chance one night at a club and started talking about an interview I had given to the Star tabloid during the scandal involving Michael Jackson and the underage boy. Prince was upset that I had spoken to the tabloid; he attacked me for my comments and he was especially bothered by a line that quoted me as saying that Michael would never get married. He shouted, “Did you need the money that bad?” Are you that poor-that broke, that you sell your story to the tabloids?"

So while they definitely weren't best friends, they did get along and had contact over the years. I never felt Prince wanted acceptance from anyone or anything in the industry, because Prince did whatever Prince wanted and didn't give a damn about what anyone said biggrin

As we can see, this is another attempt to drag Michael and claim he was some severe inferior and madly jealous and conniving towards Prince. I wish this nonsense rivalry talk would end, as it's clear as day these 2 men had nothing but respect for each other, mixed with a little competition.

Prince used to talk about him & Tyka being picked on as kids in the neighborhood....P probably saw Michael Jackson as an easy target, and got a kick out of fucking with Michael just for the pure joy and ego boost of it... there was also P's failed and embarrassing attempt to join MJ onstage with James Brown, that probably made P wanna kick Mike's ass (figuratively speaking)...Will I Am from B.E.P. tells a great story about P and MJ's rivalry manifesting itself in later years

Will I Am who invited MJ to watch him perform onstage with Prince in 2006, says:

"There was a point during the show where Prince was playing bass and he came out into the audience with this giant bass—he knew where Michael was sitting—and he walked right up to Michael and started playing bass in Michael's face. Like aggressive slap bass.

"The next morning, Will went over to Michael's house for breakfast, and they're talking about Prince and the show. And then Michael goes, 'Will, why do you think Prince was playing bass in my face?'

"Michael was outraged. And then started going on. 'Prince has always been a meanie. He's just a big meanie. He's always been not nice to me."

Its clear to me that like any other Alpha Male, Prince saw MJ as a Beta Male, and an easy target, and treated him accordingly, and apparently getting a kick out of fucking with the so-called King Of Pop...you gotta respect that...thats the way of the world ... cats smell fish, they gonna eat... and Quincy Jones weirdo ass, probably got all moist in the pants trying to instigate shit between the two of them..... Q always has been a snake-like puppet-master

lol That wasn't the video concept. See bboy87's post. The concept focused on Michael and Prince, not just Michael. Quincy wanted to play into the media generated "rivalry" by having them both have a dance and sing off and then towads the end they come together and squash the beef.

thumbs up! I wish you posted more!!! Its clear, Michael respected Prince as an artist and wanted to work with him (I am not sure why that is so hard to believe). Prince is not the only 80s icon he wanted to work with on BAD. Whitney Houston also was suppose to duet with him on I Just Can't Stop Loving You.

So while they definitely weren't best friends, they did get along and had contact over the years. I never felt Prince wanted acceptance from anyone or anything in the industry, because Prince did whatever Prince wanted and didn't give a damn about what anyone said biggrin

"Getting along"...sounds like basic civility to me, although it's well documented that there were many episodes of clearly not "getting along".

Like I commented earlier, "being friendly" isn't the same as "being friends" but I understand MJ fans who also consider themselves P fans like to beleive they were friends. I don't think thier personalities were conducive to friendship with each other..

Also, I find it hard to find this gal's remarks about what P said to her credible since she admits speaking to the tabloids about MJ.

Erm, this goes back to my comment about whining.

What grownazzed man calls another grownazzed man a "big meanie" and complains that "he's always been not nice to me"?

Seriously? It's that very thing that I think kept P from being able to take MJ seriously as a friend after he realized that the "popular kid" wasn't a "cool kid".

As for Alphas and Betas (although I think more Zeta than Beta, but I digress), I think after the early days of P getting fame and confidence and realizing the true nature of things, this may very well be true.

Its clear, Michael respected Prince as an artist and wanted to work with him (I am not sure why that is so hard to believe).

Respecting P's artistry and respecting P as a man and wanting to be his friend, a real friend not a "made up fake industry friend for the sake of publicity" aren't the same thing.

I think that ending up in LA, P was a bit wide eyed and in awe and out of his element at first...and the thought of being friends with a young Black male in the industry like MJ might've been appealing...at first...until P realized it couldn't happen in any substantial way without compromising his values and possibly losing focus on his art.

I think MJ started out enjoying simply singing but ended up enjoying being a celebrity far more, to his eventual personal downfall.

I think P enjoyed making music and thought he'd enjoy celebrity far more than he did and he eventually matured into keeping the celebrity in it's place and focussing on the art more.

Truthfully, I think if MJ had stayed in Indiana and persued his music career he might never have become "MJ" as the public has come to know him.

I also think if P hadn't kept ties to Minneapolis in the physical form of PP, he would've ended up being assimilated into the music industry "Borg collective" in LA, losing focus and becoming (for better or worse) anything but the P he became.

Just like we have stories of them not getting along, we also have stories of them getting along, like I mentioned Michael sending tapes to Prince and Michael Bland talking about MJ and Prince hanging out, for example

I've been skeptical of that "big meanie" comment since Will has told that story differently over the years. Hell, we also have Quincy saying after the incident at the James Brown concert, Prince tried to run down Michael and LaToya in his car, and he's guilty of embellishing as well lol

but hey, we all have differing opinions biggrin

You're so right in saying that everyone has an opinion, especially regarding this particular topic of discussion.

Considering that all I've ever heard regarding either a "respectful/friendly rivalry/competition" or "getting along" or "hanging out" or anything else has been from people who aren't either P or MJ, I think my opinion will have to remain extremely skeptical that there was ever anything more substantial than an intermittant polite civility between the two of them...ever.

Especially since I've absolutely never heard either P or MJ publicly acknowledge any sort of a true friendship (or even a casual friendship) between them, even when asked directly by the media.

Actually, I don't remember hearing MJ questioned about a friendship with P, but I do remember hearing P asked several times about MJ and if they were whatever or if P considered MJ competition or whether P was going to collaborate with MJ...as if they were expecting P to be automatically expected to be seeking those things from MJ as opposed to viceversa.

I find it hilarious, especially in light of how it all played out historically.

wink cool

I wonder why Prince later said that he did not like the "your butt is mine" lyric since he said it would be a hit without him. MJ and Prince both admired, liked, respected and inspired each other.

-/ You really do not see the problem with Prince standing around while MJ dances around pointing and saying "Your Butt is mine" I mean you really don't see the problem.

--It still would have been corny. Not something I want to see two brothers doing.

Prince and Michael were fans of each other. The so-called "rivalry" was created entirely by the media.

Their rivalry wasn't invented. All you have to do is read some of Prince's lyrics from the 90s.

The whole "Cqmile" thing, Prince hiring from the MJ camp...

"2 whomever it may concern you must come to your senses"
"You must become a Prince before a king anyway"
"So called king gives birth to so called Prince"
"My voice is getting higher and I ain't never had my nose done"

Are some of the most obvious references to MJ. There is also a line in "No More Candy 4 U" where Prince mentions "freaks walking into walls" - granted he could have been referencing Harry Potter... more likely he was talking about that time MJ walked into a wall at some awards show.

Now, that said... I don't think Prince was being cruel. But he obviously got a bit of a kick out of teasing MJ.

It's a polite way of telling someone to fuck off after they ask if MJ can sing about owning you... to your face... and on tape.

Mike didn't know Prince would go up on stage and jump up on a stage prop into the crowd. lol lol lol lol lol LOL thinking about that mess, Love Prince but damn! razz

Well MJ had to call Prince up on stage, after he did a couple of "woos" and "I Love You's" he had nothing left to offer... he just stood there.
