No because I'm not paying for music I already have and I know too many well meaning people that are going to think they've found the perfect Xmas gift for me, so I'll likely have more than a couple of copies anyway. shrug

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

So far after 83 responses

.

Yes - 51 (Includes all responses about waiting for it to reduce in price)

No - 22 (Including 4 responses where the person said they would get a boot or an illegal download)

Unsure - 10 People who wrote gibberish or maybe.

.

Looks like a strong case for buying it.

Not sure I'd quantify that as "a strong case". It looks to me more like a missed opportunity. I bet the majority of those 22 would be more than happy to pay for it if there had been a bit more thought put into it.

Maybe more important question is how many non-hardcore fans will buy it.

We might want it because of ML and the edits, but the rest of the world who just like the well known hits already bought one of the other compilations in April/May.

Adding The Most Beautiful GITW and newer releases might have raised their interest.

But Prince was planning on releasing this when he was alive, this isn't just something cooked up by na estate planning company. He even picked out the cover.

Reportedly Prince put this together and had a hand int he artwork. This wasn't some rush job. Even it it was a rush job, the estate has bills to pay and if you don't want the govenment taking everything (including your ability to buy live/vault releases in the future), then you might consider picking one of these up to support the cause. The more popular Prince stays both on the charts and in general the more likely you are to have music you WANT available to you in the future.

Elsewhere we already concluded that 'they' (estate, heirs, etc) need to take very radical measures to even scratch the surface of the music in the vault.

I do doubt they will go that far.

Even at 4 CDs per year it will be a trickling stream that will never let us hear the majority of the massive amounts of stuff in the vault.

Let alone 40 CDs per year.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Of course, yes. Not supporting this will have negative implications on the marketability of future Prince releases of any kind.

I really don't believe than existing fans not buying this is going to have negative implications on future vault releases. Over the long term, this is about trying to widen the fanbase, which I hope is successful.

There is a hardcore more than willing to part with their cash in support of well-thought out vault releases. This is a profitable business that will be exploited no matter what happens to any best-of package.

Yes. I already pre-ordered it. I want all officially released material. It's all about that one song n this case and all I have is the boot version. I want this one as an official version as well.

Exactly.

Because of this I'm curious how the new Bowie compilation will sell, which is a comparable release (first official compilation after his death, 40 tracks and hardly anything new for fans or anyone who already bought his albums earlier this year).

.

On topic: I consider to buy 4EVER and probably will.

It would have been a no brainer with some more singles like TMBGITW, Musicology etc. They could have also add for example If Eye Could Get Your Attention, which is probably a new track for 90% or more.

If they used the Purple Rain shorter version and skip Head, Uptown and Gotta Stop (which I love but don't belong on a greatest hits) there would have been space for more hits.

Well I think it is strong, considering there was a 24 page thread on how much of a rip off and a cash in on a dead celebrity it was. There were grumbles about buying repackaged music for the 4th or 5th time, dangling Monnbeam Levels as a carrot and gripes about single edits and censored versions. I honestly thought the yes camp would be under 50% and it was around 60 - 65%.

.

It is like we are all saying one thing and doing the opposite. How long until we have "40 Golden hits" type compilations issued by Bear Family, Rhino, Murray Hill and other "oldies' labels.

No I don't intend to buy this, I'll certainly try to get Moonbeam Levels as an individual track download (if that's not possible I would have no qualms about pirating it quite honestly) but I don't feel the need to pay for stuff I've already owned for a while.

I'm kinda shocked that any fan would consider NOT buying this

1) It contains a vault track that is considered one of the best

2) The success or otherwise of this release may have implications as to how readily other vault material is released

One vault track out of 40 songs. Nah. Not paying $16.99 for one track. lol

Think of it as an investment for many future vault tracks.

An "investment"? You don't get any future vault tracks for free if you buy this release.
And of course they will release more vault stuff in the future, even if this release flops.
