TMZ: Jay Z Bid to Buy Prince's Unreleased Music

It's TMZ, so take it with a grain of salt...

http://www.tmz.com/2016/1...buy-music/

Jay Z Bid to Buy Prince's Unreleased Music

Jay Z tried to snap up all the unreleased Prince music that was unearthed at Paisley Park after the singer's death ... TMZ has learned.

We've learned Jay met with Prince's sister, Tyka, and her husband, Maurice Phillips, several weeks ago. The mogul flew Tyka and Maurice to NYC to meet with him.

Sources close to Prince's family tell us ... Jay made an offer of around $40 million. We were unable to confirm the figure from Jay's camp.

But there was a rub. Tyka may be Prince's only full sibling, but she has to get sign-off from all the brothers and sisters, in addition to the trust that is managing the estate.

Word is that JZ is still in the running to get the overall deal for streaming rights ... but it will be very expensive and there are some major players in the game.

Update:

Apparent response from Londell...

Update #2 (thanks Babynoz):

http://www.billboard.com/...ased-music

Prince Rep Has 'No Knowledge' of Jay Z's Reported $40 Million Offer for Artist's Unreleased Music

[...]

Reached for comment, L. Londell McMillan, an advisor to the estate, told Billboard that he has “no knowledge of any discussions in that report,” and emphasized “there is no sale [of Prince’s music assets], and those responsible for the assets are not in discussions with anyone regarding a sale.” McMillan confirmed to Billboard last week that the estate is considering offers, including bids from all three major labels, to license -- not purchase -- Prince’s catalog and unreleased material.

[...]

Representatives for Jay Z and Tyka Nelson had not responded to Billboard’s request for comment at press time.

--- Once again someone at TMZ has their head in their ass. First the article said sell and then it said streaming rights. Which is it? Because their is a big difference.

Well I guess this explains the previous headline about the estate shopping the vault for $35 million.

People need to remember that the vault material isn't the same as the back catalog. The catalog is full of hit songs & songs that could have been hits if they'd been released as singles. It's infinitely marketable. The song "Kiss" could generate millions on it's own by licencing it to makeup brands for advertising.

The Vault is full of untested songs. Which may go on to make hundreds of millions... or may only be of interest to a few tens of thousands of fans around the world.

All I can do is speculate but I'd have to think Jay-Z's offer would be for the rights to the music rather than actually buying the vault music outright.

no not Jay Z. I know Prince used Tidal for his music streaming, but I am not sure how I feel about Jay Z, rearranging Prince's music.

I honestly think Warner Brothers should buy it because they knew Prince and his sound. Jay Z may put some rap spin on Prince's music. No, no

Since I heard about Prince's unreleased music being supposedly sold, for some reason, Jay Z got on my mind because of the association with Tidal.

Prince didn't have a problem with Jay-Z. Princce did have a problem with WB. I'm surprised people would rather WB ended up owning the music Prince fought them for.

I'd guess if the estate had accepted we'd be hearing about it. More likely they're using J's $40 million offer as a way to negotiate a higher price from the big labels.

I know prince really like Jay Z and obviously felt comfortable with him controlling his entire catalog on his crappy streaming service Tidal.

However I really don't want him to own and control all the unreleased tracks

--They are not going to sell anything. They are going to continue to stream on Tidal which requires licencing fees. The back catalog is already on Tidal so why not put the unreleased material on Tidal. This is the fastest means to get the music to the public and Prince seemed happy with whatever Tidal was paying.

Prince gave the re-issue of Purple rain to WB so he approved that - and he streamed his music on Tidal - If there are streaming rights being sold to Tidal - it makes sense. I hope they dont sell JayZ mechanical rights to do anything to the music itself.

If there is mastering arranging or finishing to be done - WB should do that as they've done great work with Princes music - the issue with Prince & WB wasnt with the quality of Princes music it was with the business side of it - I would totally trust WB to handle, market and package Princes music properly.

I'm not a fan of Tidal - JayZ has also been shopping it to sell it... so who knows where the vault would end up.

So you remember that Prince's music is streaming on Tidal. So why would he not meet the family. The family are heirs to the estate and will have to make a decision about Tidal at some point.

If he gets streaming rights, cool. Just don't edit any shit out. Hopefully, whoever gets to release in Physical format will do it right (artwork, booklet explaining outtake details, etc.) I personally wouldn't have a problem if Warners would get the catalog.

-- Why they had no interest in what he was doing for 20 years. Do you know how many songs or albums they did not releashed in the first place. They can do the marketing and promotion and just not own anything.

That is why I won't always dismissed TMZ's gossip anything related to Prince as much as it sounds tabloid. You best believed that Harvey and Co knew what went down on April 21st too but they are sitting on it until the right time.

TMZ and Warner Bros Records are like cousins as TMZ owned by Time Warner and Warner Bros Records owned by Warner Music Group. They are part of the Warner family.

Londell knows a lot of shit but he is definately deflecting. I think there are some lot of talks and stuff going on that the fans are unaware of and tough choices are pondering and considering.

And Prince didn't have problem with Jay-Z and seems like Tyka and her husband don't either. I have issues with Jay-Z but its not place to tell the family what they should and should not do. So sometimes fan need to step back as some decisions in the future are going to be made and fans won't like it but it will be out of their control.
