The service was broadcast live around the world, from the U.S. to Slovakia to parts of Asia. Public screenings were held in 37 cinemas across the U.S., as well as in Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Bucharest, Gothenburg, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Malmö, Oslo, Paris, Milan, Seville, Stockholm, and Tallinn.[26] There was also a live broadcast at 3am in Melbourne, Australia at Federation Square.[27] Before the event, the organizers expected an estimated one billion viewers.[28][29][30] According to Nielsen, 31.1 million Americans watched the service live on television;[31] an amount comparable to the 35.1 million that watched the state funeral of former president Ronald Reagan in 2004.[32] According to some news sources the event exceeded 2.5 billion viewers, which would make it the most watched live television broadcast in history worldwide.[33] Although this number is not widely agreed upon. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department motorcycle detail patrolling the parameter of the Staples Center during the memorial service. Also in comparison to other big non-funeral related events, the inauguration of President Barack Obama garnered about 38 million viewers, and the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics garnered about 34.2 million viewers in the U.S. alone.[34] The memorial service was the most watched event in online streaming history.[35] CNN's webcast drew at least 9.7 million streams; their feed on Ustream, 4.6 million streams; and MSNBC's feed via Justin.tv drew three million.[36] Media coverage[edit] According to Global Language Monitor, the coverage from the death and aftermath to the funeral of Michael Jackson tops Pope John Paul II as No.1 media (noting the longer timeframe and contentious circumstances re. the former).[37] Cost[edit] The city of Los Angeles said the memorial had cost the city $1.4 million for 1,400 police officers, trash pick-up, sanitation, and traffic control. The city set up a webpage asking fans for donations to help with the expenses, though it kept crashing. City Attorney Carmen Trutanich said it would be wrong to expect taxpayers to finance a private event. "The city attorney does not want something like this happening again, the city paying for a private event," spokesman John Franklin told CNN. "That's especially in a cash-strapped city, where people have been furloughed or even lost jobs."[38]

They have no cash. What do you want them to do? How can they stage an event like MJ? Besides, Prince was no MJ. Prince would have not wanted anything like MJ I am sure. He would have done something big but differently. The celebration in October is too late. There is no point in that. Maybe it's a good thing cause we still want to know about it, but it is not a celebration of Prince. This thing is over.

I am very confused this week. I have no idea anymore which direction to look at.

Prince I will always miss and love U.

I think all of the people he helped should perform at the concert for free.
Pay their airfare and for their hotel rooms.
Charge a small fee for admission $25-50
for security etc..And perhaps have people he wrote hits for perform.
I personally wouldn't pay to see Lady Gaga sing Prince songs..And I would never pay hundreds for a ticket to see anyone but Prince himself!
Until the end of time

I am afraid it is over. I am trying very hard to stick to the belief that it is not and trying to find some joy but it is very dark. My biggest fear is that he may fade into obscurity. I think this is too soon to happen. I am not wholly blaming his family for feeling this way as I know they can't give us Prince back. I would have wanted to them to share their sadness, joy etc with the fans. They have not and this is the issue here. It could have been a snippet of a song played at the service this saturday or a picture of Prince that we have never seen. But they don't. We are all feeling left out - left alone in our grief, but remember whatever they do they can't bring him back.

It is sad.

Exactly. I wonder if someone was suppose to stay but they didn't. If someone in his inner circle called the DR in California and said he was in a GRAVE MEDICAL EMERGENCY, then why would that same person leave him alone unless they thought someone else was staying. Who was the last person to see him alive?????

True. Back in April most people already assumed it was going to be private and quiet, I don't know what all this other is about but if the family decided to go beyond having something just for the family/friends then good. I've already said I'm cool with memorials going on until forever if need be. I'm over the intial shock anyway. Closure means answers to me at this point so a service won't bring me closure anyway regardless when it's held.

We knew that when he died on Thursday autopsies on Friday morning and cremated Friday afternoon Smdh

I was a little bitter about how quickly the cremation took place, but in hindsight Tyka did the right thing to do everything quickly so medical people could not take pictures of him and sell them to the tabloids like they did Michael Jacksons autopsy photo, Whitney Houston's and Robin Williams. I'm glad we did not see Prince like that.
Prince wanted his family to have his money remember he said that in an interview.
I don't think he left a will because he assumed it would go to his siblings.

There is no answer really. Whenever somebody dies people look for answers, but there are no satisfactory answers. Even if you were told the whole truth you would still be looking for an answer. Now looking forward I am more concerned about his legacy and we gotta find a way to keep this thing alive otherwise will be grieving like forever.

Hmmm I am not sure what could be expected from the family? I feel like whatever they could do we may still not feel satisfied because we are missing Prince and we don't care for these folks. So we are wanting someting that is not there.

I am just wondering if at this rate and pace Prince will go onto obscurity. It is a little dealt like he was second rate, there has nothing happened that justified this man. I keep waiting but I begin to wonder what and when will this celebration happen?

Prince has already been forgotten by the average person...he's an afterthought. But his fans are still trynna do right by him even though we too have been forgotten. He died in April but his memorial is in October...alrighty then...shit ain't right.

yeahthat

I've been thinking about this a lot. WHO has a funeral or memorial 4 months later?!

Seems so very disrespectful of Prince. disbelief

Even the exes, Sheila E and Spike Lee got it that nothing was getting done to pay respect to Prince.

IMO, I feel like they were waiting to make sure they were heirs and were going to get the $$$.

As for the October concert, I feel like it's just to pay the taxes.

It's like Revolution said all these people have been to at least three memorials but ours is 6 months later and we gotta pay for it...think not. I appreciated Spike Lee doing that and Sheila

Anyway those have been my thoughts since Prince passed however I did buy at the record store Hit and Run 2 was thinking that would have been what Prince would have wanted.

I remember when Prince was not happy when he found out about Starous...in a sad way I feel this way about Prince seems
Someone lied about the way somebody died

about two months ago I bought all of Prince's last three CDs, his movies and a P&M poster and I did that out of love and remembrance of Prince. But I will never buy another thing from anybody associated or related to him. I feel like they said a big fuck you to his fans and him for that matter.

And our beloved Prince most likely knew that we would react this way and be so hurt by the way we are being treated.

Hmm.. The legacy of Prince belongs not to his biological family as it were.. It belongs to the multitudes of artists, creators - dreamers and his royal fandom to drive to his legacy onward to ensure the next generation knows him and his contributions. If u never buy another Prince relic again - it matters not for the catalogs u already have speak volumes. Share it. Personally I am dissatisfied with every shred of information leading up to the 911 call placed 4/21- the fallout of his monetary value and the vault is on his shoulders and perhaps in this final instance he was giving us the insights we needed to see the vultures that rocked his world daily. Alas Prince is gone for all purposes and intents ..
