Something in the Water has always been one of my all time favorite songs, in all its different versions, but this instrumental version is one of the best ever. Great jamming, great solos.

And I also love this version of Strange Relationship.

I could listen to rehearsals and soundchecks from this period for days.

And I often do. wink

Could we qualify this solo (Something In The Water) as one of Prince's true "Guitar God moments"? (Yes, there was a thread dealing with this topic)

I think this might be my favorite Something in the Water. It sounds real fresh especially with the sax solo first.

So....where do these come from?

Yeah! mad lol neutral

Blame Prince. If he weren't such a fucking tyrant about these things, and if his lawyers didn't have the Org's balls in a vice, we'd be able to share freely.

In my case this stuff came form the innerwebz, so we can thank either Al Gore or DARPA, whichever you believe as being involved with originating the webz.

Were you more than pleasant after hearing more than two songs? Or is it still just a throwaway for you?

My `pleasant` is already quite OK in any other person's book. (I am a spoiled 'semi-hardcore' Prince person fan -yet critical about him- that collects boots since early 1989 or so)

I listened to the whole thing and need to listen more but it is good.

I need to find the incredible thing but it will be worth my while.

Just find this stuff and download it.

What more am I allowed to write?

One of the highlights for me is Controversy. I guess I like the Purple Rain-era version. The drums are very distinct from that period.

I agree. My favorite live rendition of Controversy is the one that opens the Feb. 23 1985 Purple Rain show at the Forum in Inglewood, CA. That is my favorite Purple Rain era show hands down!

Elsewhere:

Ah ben tiens... Strange Relationship déjà entièrement enregistré (?!!!) High Fashion au complet... et enfin un Groove In A complètement déroutant !!!

Awesome stuff. I must say, though....as badass as SITW is, IMHO, I still prefer the version on the Neon Rendevous rehearsal bootleg. boxed

Was at the Forum show on Feb. 23, 1985 and that was such a great and totally unexpected moment. For those that do not know, there were a handful of shows during the PR tour where the lights just went out and with the stage curtain drawn and in blackness Prince would perform Controversy or 17 Days. There has been speculation if these were actually done as sound checks in lieu of one occuring earlier in the day. Very hard to determine as such, but it is possible that some were.

That is one of the things that has made Prince who he is, that spontaneity and still after all these years, the sense of mystery as to what he will play, where he will show up, etc.

I hardly listen to any of the actual PR tour shows anymore. However, the precores, encores, rehearsals and sound checks are what I continue to find frequently my go to for when I need some funky-jamming Prince to listen to.

That´s my favorite version, too.....actually ANY version of SITW that he played during rehearsals and live shows is great. I love that song in all its different versions but those early to mid 80s versions are my favorite ones.

Great song, great versions.

And I like that he´s come up with different instrumentations over the years, from the cold , synth heavy version on 1999 to the piano and bass heavy 1983 studio version and 1983-85 long , guitar heavy versions to the acoustic guitar versions in 2004 and of course the airy, breezy, lighter version during the One Night Alone tour, or the 3rdEyeGirl versions and the current Piano and a Microphone version.....this song never gets boring and is one of my all time favorite songs.

It is, in my opinion the highlight of this bootleg recording.

That is a wonderful performance as well. And we are so lucky to be able to hear these moments pulled out of time.

*

These two performances could be bookends for the entire era. One of them is rehearsal, giving us a "fly on the wall" glimpse of how amazing those rehearsals were. Though for the members of the revolution they were hard work. We get to hear that moment in time, forgetting that for them that moment was one of many days of endlessly replaying the same stuff.

*

The other is entirely the opposite, not rehearsing to get it perfect, but perfection gained through sheer love of playing for himself. Though of course there is no such thing as perfection, the sound check version has plenty of flaws, a slow and interrupted start, missed bits here and there. But the perfection that does come through for me, is the purity of his playing. That guitar solo is coming from somewhere deep inside Prince. And it speaks volumes.

I'm really impressed! How can it be that it has leaked more than thirty years after? Where, whom stored it? Sound is great! Without any doubt, best part is 17 days (as the opening of PR tour at Uniondale) & it confirms that it is by far my best Prince's song (followed by Another Lonely Xmas). Prince had a great era from 82' till 86' and I'm really thankful for all the happiness he brings me through his music.

Yet another performance that should be present in the ultimate Purple Rain deluxe box set.

.

Astonishing that gems like these remained under wraps for 30+ years. Debunks all the BS from the skeptics who claim the "insiders" don't have any good shit anymore...

It's one of the 'A Night in Erotic City' shows in the vip room at Glam Slam, pretty loose and funky show. Great to have the NPG horns on there too.
