that's really great that you found a band that fits what you want them to be for you. there's so many to choose from, so when we disparage others for NOT being that, or following their own muse, even if a its a "fleeting one" or one that involves a desire for stardom but doesn't come at the expense of personal growth (as if those things are mutually exclusive concepts).

Meanwhile, back to the intent of the post...

Well, you and Bohemian appeared to be saying: well, he's older now, so he can't be dangerous etc. [relevant?] anymore, we shouldn't expect that of him, we should be glad for what we get blabla...

And I'm saying: they are also artists who CAN pull it off.

As for the thread topic: the song is crap.

Checked out New Model army on youtube. Urgh. "Puking smilie". Typical rockers like Van Halen, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith etc whom I've never liked. Ugly White men with long hair. Little soul, no R&B, too hard, too noisy. They sounded awful too too generic. But the good news Pentacle is that they have full concerts on Youtube! So run along now and go and 'be' dangerous.
lol

By the way not going along with youtube and spotify is quite rebellious don't you think? But don't worry 'Prince is gonna keep doing you until come to Revelation'.

IF u read what I stated about some of the things danger can me besides what u WANT them to mean apparently u didn't grasp them. My feelings remain regardless of what u think of the song. Not that anyone who isn't Black can't appreciate the song but I'm not surprised by those who don't. Of course the sonic structure is an 'out' if the content is lost on someone like u. (Plural). Mellow Prince does not = retirement homr. Good musicianship is timeless. There's multiple threads per day u can hop on to wax nostalgically or bash everything post 80s. Pick one

I don't need Prince to sing about incest with his sister, but something substantial would be nice.

And songs about masturbation are always great, of course.

Or you know, something insubstantial set to cracking music, like most of his old output.

They are nothing like Van Halen or Aerosmith; they ARE Stones influences (whose music is very different from VH and Aerosmith); 'generic' - that is actually the first time in history this label has been put on them.

Lucky for you they'll be in the Amsterdam Melkweg around Christmas, like every year. I'll be seeing you there. I'm one of the ugly white men in the audience, but beauty is on the inside, right?

But back on topic: What happened to you, Prince? Your ass used to be beautiful.

this to me is indicitive of this site and the general ignorance about the evolution of music and artistry.

i was taken aback by black muse

its musical sophistication, its groove and its lyrical nature..its fucking incredible

my 12 year old son went and read about civil rights and slavery after listening and reading this "non substantial " work

"can I talk to you what I got to share is mighty good news a brand new day is dawning U and me know what to do so much work to do Black Muse we've been so abused Our mothers were good looking and our fathers were too if they don't stay together we can walk no better in these shoes"

Prince is still more rebellious (subtly) than most artists around today ...

NWA were terryfying and genuinly groundbreaking back when they dropped straight outta compton
youthful righteous anger and rebellion..
you really want a NWA in the late 50s TRYING to be rebellious ..or rather what you believe "rebellion" to me
rebellion is far from growing your hair long and shouting whats wrong with the world....
so if you think an african american singing about how the shameful past of slavery is still affecting the world today is "not substantial" ....then words fail me

It's some straight up juvenile, ahistorical ass peeps in here. Do you have ANY idea of the difficulty marriage and how helpful good examples for families and communities?! That's the POINT of that lyrical excerpt. Do u realize that black skin/features were (and still are) denigrated?! He covers huge topical ground in those few lines and the Porgy and Bess reference is intentional

word... whenever P displays any racial pride or knowledge of self, it pisses off a certain percentage of his fan base...some of them just want him to shred guitar, wear shiny purple trench coats, perm his hair over one eye, and write songs about Starfishes and Coffees with wendy & lisa & susannah, forever....

What does the reference mean?

What's so clever about substituting 'rich' with 'good-looking (too)'?

Why would parents staying together only be good for black families?

Why would parents staying together at any cost be good?
Also note that Prince himself divorced twice.
It's easy to come up with platitudes.

The fact that a song touches on slavery and/or the position of black people

doesn't elevate the lyric.

wow, thanks for your cnn news headline about prince being twice divorced. he must have tweeted you directly. that fact doess not mean its something that he doesn't regret or has affected his view of how families endure difficult times or if he views his marriage as "different" (not the best case in point, given all the celebrity extras) and not reflective of the larger community he wants to inspire. clearly families staying together is good for ALL families WHEN they're healthy marriages (if THAT'S not apparent then....SMH). the lyric struck me as poignant, reflective and even vulnerable (in light of his divorces) if its so easy to come up with "platitudes" that inspire, then why the contemporary dearth that fits THIS context. AND for the record he can visit the subject matter as often as he wants/needs. mofos kill me trying to dictate someone else's artistry. i get it you hate the song. lots of yous. everyone one does not. what's crap to you is not universally so. keep it moving already

.

If you ran a survey amongst 100 classical music respondents, soul or R&B fanatics etc or specific genre lovers, I'm sure you'd hear the word generic a lot more often. The culture surrounding rock bands, rap artists and commercial pop have never attracted me so I won't be in the Melkweg.

.

Is beauty really on the inside Pentacle, or is beauty in the eye (or ear) of the beholder?

.

Before December though, be sure to take a visit to the Scheepvaartsmuseum to see the east section on Slavery, based on Henk den Heijer's research book with collaborating authors. The exhibition is called The Dutch Black Page of history and explains how 600 thousand slaves were bought and sold, taken over the Atlantic in the 17th and 18th century. Aspha Bijnaar shows what it was like for children to live in slavery. Scholarly research pyschologists, link this early fragmentation of families being sold and torn apart to modern day issues their culture stiill suffer from. Having your roots ripped away from you is not exactly pleasant now, is it?

.

You might not like Black Muse, that's fine. You should though be able to place yourself in someone else's 'shoes' and understand why others do if you are capable of any human empathy, even if you are not that familiar with the subject behind the lyrics. Be nice Pentacle. I know you can do it.

I obviously know about slavery but who knows, I might do that. But again: it won't turn the song into a masterpiece.

And again: generic - no. Try pigeonholing a band which worked both with Tom Jones and Sepultura.

Look, I'm not a hater of this song. I like it a little bit. But what really annoys me about it is that when I think of it, it's mostly just singing women harmonizing. I think, for me, that brings it out of my sphere of attention and praise because Prince is sort of in the background. Lately he has been doing that so much... getting women to sing his songs... Shelby, etc. At least Rosie was a unique voice, and was limited to a line or two. I'm a singer, and I can harmonize to P songs myself... I don't need them to sing it for him...you know what I mean? It's annoying and unlistenable now

How'm I gonna fill this empty room...
