It's a win win for gun/arms manufacturors. Sell ppl guns to protect themselves from ppl who bought guns to protect themselves. One thing is hunting, other thing is selling assault weapons to the general public. Gun control don't mean gun ban, it means fewer idiots carrying assault weapons. Look at statistics, more ppl killed by home-owned guns than ever by terrorists in the states, yet billions are spent fighting terrorists. Seriously?

I was very happy to hear P call for gun control. It does not mean a person hates guns or wants to ban them or wants to prevent ppl from hunting. It means sensible distribution for sensible use.

There's no such thing as an "assault rifle" . . assault is verb. rifles are inanimate objects not capable of their own action

The statistics are skewed and used to appeal to the emotion of people like yourself. In reality most of those statistics include such suicide - so such a statistic has no credibility as someone determined enough to kill themselves can also jump off a bridge. See: Golden Gate Bridge

As a non-American I can't help but have a bit of a laugh at the attitude towards guns in your country.

So, so, so many more deaths compared to countries that don't have guns.

It's sad that having a much higher death rate from guns than other comparable countries is seen as a part of a culture, rather than a problem to try and eradicate.

Also it's not difficult to understand the culture. Many understand it but just disagree with it and the resultant high death rate.

I prefer to think that there may be a day when we dont need to carry at all.
To Princes point, that starts with taking them away. We've proven we are not
Responsible enough with this much power.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I hate guns, and feel our over reliance on them is morally shallow. The guard in my gym parking lot, hell, the guards at the grocery store, wear giant guns and walk around squinting at everyone like Clint Eastwood. I'd rather have someone steal my stereo than have someone get killed for trying to steal my stereo.

.

That said, I don't believe in 'take the guns away', at least not in this country, because there's like 400 million of them, and the people who own them are very very serious about it. That doesn't end well for anyone.

Again, you're creating a general rule from an exceptional (and unlikely) case. And besides, deradicalization doesn't just begin with law reform.

You sound like Wayne La Pier when you throw these ridiculous scenarios around to incite fear.

When you say, "take all the guns away" are you referring to the song "Baltimore"? If so, I actually gained even more respect for him after he wrote the song for the city of Baltimore last year as a result of the uprisings that ensued after the death of Freddie Gray. Your right to wound or kill an intruder in your home or animals in the wild was not at the forefront of his mind when he wrote those lyrics. He was thinking about the family of Freddie Gray and families of countless others who have died as a result of firearms, especially young black men such as Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown. Quite often, context is everything. Are you in favor of police officers shooting and often killing unarmed citizens? If not, then you are closer to understanding Prince's sentiments than you realize. He doesn't want to take away your gun necessarily but he does want to take guns away from those who kill humans unnecessarily.

Check out these links and maybe you will understand where he's coming from:

http://www.theroot.com/photos/2014/07/unarmed_black_men_killed_by_law_enforcement.html

http://www.rolereboot.org/culture-and-politics/details/2014-08-black-unarmed-women-girls-without-weapons-killed-law-enforcement/

If they were killing your sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers or those in your community, maybe you would want the guns taken away as well.

Peace,

Grog

I think p lyrics are more idealogical than practical .. And therefore mostly meaningless

It would be great if no one ever had guns ... Of course ... But if cops can drive tanks and murder innocent civilians based upon color .. Well i know every citizen is better off with some real fire power .. And ps ALL terrorism is manufactured to terrorize YOU into voluntarily giving up your ability to protect yourself

P is a sell out unfortunately .. Like hillary he lost all his cred and stands for nothing these days ... Even if you agree with him .. That doesnt mean he gets it .. One day he says to love and respect women ... The next day he calls them pretty "things" ... Money is his god and he serves money ultimately .. Those who serve money feed the violence that comes from what you have when others dont

Trevor,

I am not so sure Prince has lost credibility. If he's a sell out, he's a sell out who has created a slew of socially conscious songs. Who else wrote a song for Balitmore, gave a concert for Baltimore and called for peace in Baltimore? If that makes him a sell out, then I wish we had more sell outs in the industry. Who do you have in mind who is not a sell out and is making songs about current social conditions? And as for his stance being more ideological than practical, that's fine with me because that's the only stance that gets things done. Making practical demands don't usually get you very far, but asking for more than you know you will get, does usually get you at least something. You can't change things if you don't push for more than the system is willing to offer. For example, if you want one million dollars for a homeless shelter, ask for ten.

Unequivically false . . Switzerland. In the US those statistics are inflated by falsified and misleading statistics. First of all if you remove places like California and Chicago - which have the most strict gun control laws - those numbers drop significantly.

and here lies the problem with someone like Prince conveying political beliefs, someone who walks around with a bodyguard is never going to be a credible person on gun control

I am not claiming to know what goes on inside the heart or mind of Prince. All I am claiming is that he has said similar things about guns and social conditions since Controversy (1981?). Remember the album cover with Prince in the foreground and newspaper headlines in the background, especially those about love, God and gun control? He has been singing about those same subjects, on and off, ever since. Is he authentic? I'm not sure, but I do know he's consistent.

Every year, so many school gun shootings over there, in America...

Here in Denmark, we have had only 1 - back in the 80s (afaik, iirc).

Imo:

America is a lot more violent I really think its time for them to have Gun Control, and not free weapons for every citizen.

Yes, we use guns to kill in schools, theaters, churches, night clubs, homes, on the streets, on college campuses, in the workplace, from car windows (whether the car is moving or not), etc. Our proficiency with firearms is depressingly impressive. We seem to like being #1 in the world, even if it's for all the wrong reasons.
