I know he's not using it to sell anything but from the sounds of it, he's looking for some sort of payment before adding classic music videos or live performances. I would wonder why he expects that. Why wouldn't he use Youtube as free advertisement for his albums, which unfortunately get little to no exposure these days.

I think there are a number of issues.

Firstly the very small amount artists tend to receive from these albums. Also money upfront is worth so much more than 'potential' money.

Secondly, putting a 1980's video on Youtube would not nessecarily result in more sales for an album from 2016.

Thirdly, he does use Youtube as a promotional tool for some albums as the links above show.

Instead of looking at youtube as a means of selling his music, maybe he should see it more as an opportunity for free marketing. It won't cost him anything to upload his music videos but if people who aren't too familiar with his work see them, they might be willing to purchase the songs or albums from iTunes or whatever.

Prince is more than just an entertainer/product. He is also a career advocate, and his actions today are an act of career advocacy--not advertising for "Prince" the performer--whether any of us appreciate this aspect today or tomorrow, or not.

A number of Prince DVD's are available. Also, whilst hardcore fans would love these, it isn't that likely to draw many new followers in. Prince does fine for money and also enjoys the control of his art.

There are only 'The Hits' & 'Diamond And Pearls' for videos, and if you go to amazon.com,

you'll see you have to buy these from another seller. So apparently these titles are deleted.

Showing the '80s videos would definitely draw new people in. Of course, when they next

buy any recent cds they're bound to ask themselves WTF happened??!!

But luckily this will be answered in the MEGA memoir.

I'd hardly call that an explanation but I don't particularly care if Prince puts his stuff on youtube or not. There's a multitude of other music and entertainment out there.

However if he thinks that absolutely everything has to be monetized at all times then he's no different than the suits, bean-counters and gatekeepers that he endlessly rails against.

Either way the sun will still rise tomorrow and youtube will operate with or without his permission or presence. shrug

In the UK we can get Sign/Alladin/Rave/Hits/Diamonds etc on DVD. As regarding Prince's work over the following years...that's a whole question in itself and quite a journey!

I agree. He's already filthy rich.He should look at Youtube as simply a way to promote himself and to keep himself visible to the youngsters. For them,Youtube is the new MTV.But as I pointed out in the other thread, for Prince, there's more to it than money. He is always "against" things that he can't control. He can't control Youtube (or the Internet in general),so naturally,he's taking a stand against it.This is an all-too-familiar tactic for him, lol.

Beatles r doing the same thing....So r a lot of other acts...But u know, unlike that greedy ol' Prince, they r hailed as "smart" business people...

The irony is I do think P is making a mistake by not allowing more of his product on YouTube. I think he is missing out on the youth discovering his work...

But that doesn't translate to me thinking he's some greedy bastard....

Well you're talking to dance, who says he "needs" remasters or I guess he's gonna have a breakdown or something, lol

The thing is that he's a contrarian and the more they beg him and whine like puppies, the less they will ever get from him. How anybody can be around this long and not realize that is beyond me.

Add to that the fact that he knows people will come running as soon as he beckons and there you have it. Keep spreading your legs easily and widely and wonder why your lover don't call you in the morning? lol

Thriller has accumulated 330,000,000 views over the last 6 years. Modern artists get double or triple that.

When Doves Cry would get a fraction by comparison after the first month. Maybe he feels uneasy that young people might misunderstand the significance of his music?

To be honest, I think that's probably part of the reason. A fear that his music won't get as many plays as the likes of Michael Jackson and co. I could understand him not wanting to see the artists he's compared with receive hundreds of millions of views and Purple Rain or something get only a fraction of that.

I constantly hear Prince is all about the money...then i also constantly hear how Prince makes all these choices that cut his cash flow. Make up your minds people.

I also want to ask that if a person has a career in the music business, shouldn't that attempt to make some money in it? thedance, if Making music is his job, why does he get criticized for attempting to not do his job for free? I presume u have some type of employment. Do u ask for extra tasks at work and turn down the compensation for those tasks? Do you work for a couple hours before you clock in everyday. Do you work evening, prime time hours and turn down the extra 10-15% wage that sometimes gets offered for night shifts? Why is Prince criticized for trying to make money? Does he owe u something g he needs to give you for free? R his ticket prices way above the norm? Do his CD's cost extra? He wants to be compensated for his work. Thedance, please explain to me how that makes him 'all about the money'. I like to be compensated for my work, but I honestly don't see myself, and my friends would agree, as being 'all about the money'. Please explain, because I really don't understand.

He has never been a smart businessman when it comes to promoting his music. Now is not the time for him to start. He is an older artist that does not know how to change with todays times. Its his decision and if he does not want young people to know his music thats his perogative. Thank goodness us diehards know how to get whatever we want through other channels so it really doesnt matter if its on youtube or not for us.

Prince started out as a one-man-wunderkind, then became a cult act, as the story goes. Purple Rain pushed him into front-and-center stardom, and I guess he has enjoyed that experience! Michael Jackson was a long-time member of the Mowtown label and their big, broad audience adored him and his bros.--he's been on top for like 4eva, and obviously remains highly popular. But Prince has a healthy respect for MJ, so I don't know if he's afriad to be "shown-up" by the King of Pop. I don't think that a fear factor of under-pacing views of MJ and co. is driving his reticence to place his product online. hmmm

Nope--he's only had the drive to get out as much of his music as possible that he wants by any channel he can exploit, without suffering the censors of accountants and label executives, and maybe making a buck in the process, is what it looks like. He's been hitting a snag lately with the snafu that the Internet presents. Other striving music pros. can attest 2 that. And that other thing--the pirating thing--is for the insatiably needy, and the "theives in the temple."

He won't put his video on YouTube because they won't pay him enough, thereby actually LOSING money. Yes, he is shooting himself in the foot, because he is all about the money (and control). It's a paradox/Pyrrhic victory with only losers.

They're his songs, and therefore his right to govern how they're used.

I don't think enough people are aware that streaming sites such as YouTube and Spotify pay huge amounts of adrev money annually to labels. This isn't passed on to artists...or if you see an artist coming out in support of Spotify et al, you can bet that they're getting a sweetener from their label.

Then make the concert footage available to your fans, who ARE willing to pay for it.
