So, when did all the guitar (and pop sheen) come into this? Princevault has four configurations, and clearly there is a major across the board change in how these tracks sound between here and the end product--so when did Prince go back in and lay in the "new sound" that transformed the album. I'm assuming here that at some point he decided to lay in the "final" signature sound to this album--I'm suddenly very interested in the intervening configurations and how the songs that stayed changed through the evolution.

.

I recall that band members (Michael B?) told in interviews how they were upset when early versions of the album had leaked before it was released. Perhaps that was the catalyst to change the sound of the album? Then again, D&P was Prince trying real hard to score a hit.

yes I actually prefer this D&P to the released one. Great versions of Money don't matter 2night, Horny Pony, Willing and able, D&P (yes I don't mind that there's no Rosie Gaines) and Insatiable. I also enjoy Something funky this house comes despite Tony M. This version of Live 4 love sounds good but I miss the guitar. I prefer the released version of Walk don't walk and I never liked Schoolyard.

I agree...this collection doesn't sound like a legit album configuration, but rather a bunch of incomplete/ unmixed/unmastered tracks. As in, the bases for the final master tracks before overdubs (vox, guitar, horns, etc.) were added. These bases have simply been put in the correct track order to mimic the actual configuration. Which is fine, but it should be stated as such on the artwork.

Some of the missing elements on the tracks are OK to live without, but others are jarring. I can dig D&P without Rosie, but not without Levi's lush guitar licks. eek And what's with P's over-loud vocal on some tracks? For example on "Money Don't Matter" they sound bizarrely double-tracked, almost as if they're being delivered through a megaphone or something. wacky

It is cool to have extra lyrics in Insatiable, but that's about the only "plus" I can see with this release. Overall, the sound of the entire collection lacks "fullness."

I feel almost as if this is Prince's original vision before bringing in the lesser talents of the NPG. The end result is more commercial, but also more tacky.

It's just a collection of unfinished songs, work in progress.

I don't believe these are originals as the sleeve says.

But very nice to have !!

Never liked D&P, but still prefer the released album

agreed, but it's such a highly produced album that it's worth a listen to hear it in progress. Kinda like the T. Rex alternate album versions that were (officially) released over the years.

I agree with those who say that these are probably unfinished demos. But Prince had already released demo like songs like Forever in My Life and New Position so I don't really feel like there's anything missing.

How different are the version of the matching songs from 'uncut diamonds' versus this one?

+1

I would like also someday to give a listen to one of the first configurations of "The Gold Experience", that with "Strength" and "The Coca-Cola Theme".

Talking of this version of D&P, I have to say I find it really interesting.

Obvious highlight is the alternate version "Insatiable", but I also find really nice the more stripped down version of "Diamond & Pearls".

Without Rosie and with less musical embellishment it sounds more "Princely", in a strange way it shares musical feelings with "Love Thy Will Be Done", to say one. I really like it.

On a side note, I would like to ask a thing.

On Princevault there are listed several alternate configurations of P releases, and many of them have tracklist and specification in a way more precise than others.

Looking for example at the page of "Graffiti Bridge" you can find this one:

  • 25 September, 1988, configuration
Side 1
1. Big Tall Wall
2. Stimulation
3. Graffiti Bridge - alternate version
4. Bloody Mouth
5. The Question Of U
Side 2
1. Beatown
2. Pink Cashmere - alternate version
3. Melody Cool - alternate version
4. The Grand Progression
5. God Is Alive

Is it really circulating between some collector and the Princevault staff actually listened to it or we're talking of mere speculation on the tracklist and on the specification that "Pink Cashmere", "Melody Cool" and "Graffiti Bridge" are alternate version?!?!??

By the way, it would be also nice to see the leak of this one.

BoraBora - that configuration is most certainly circulating, since Princevault has descriptions of every track, including ones "nobody" has heard like "Bloody Mouth" and "Stimulation".

This is probably the source of the circulating versions of Melody Cool, The Grand Progression, Big Tall Wall, etc.

While I am thankful to be able to hear these, the released versions definately blow these away!! Its always cool though to hear the rough demo versions before it gets spruced up though.

I really like this alternative mix of Money Don't Matter 2 Night. The differences are subtle, but make the song sound better the the released version.

I prefer the released version of Walk Don't Walk - I much prefer the horns to whatever that noise is in this version.

Horny Pony is much better than the released version. Much better.

That noise is still in the released version.

Could a version of Gett Off perhaps replace Something Funky this House Comes as the opening track?
