Even Prince himself wasn't totally satisfied with it.

"Parade was a disaster",he said."Aside from "Kiss",there's nothing on it that I'm particularly proud of.I recorded it too soon after 'After The World In A Day' and I just didn't have enough good songs ready.I'm not gonna make that same mistake again".

He is blaming the album because the movie did not do good.
the album music was not the problem at all.
the problem was Prince felt he was an actor who could carry that movie by himself and direct it.

The movie should have had a real director. The movie should have had live renditions of the songs w/ the band.

Prince tried to duplicate the Morris & Jerome affect from Purple Rain.

The album Parade is one of his top 5 of his whole career.

What has he said about Graffiti Bridge the album. And the complete utter failure of the movie?

Most fans still enjoy-love Under the Cherry Moon. Most fans can't stand to watch the movie Graffiti Bridge.

Could not have said it better.

Parade is excellent and easily in the top 5.

I hope SoulAlive won't mind me quoting him from another thread, but I thought this would make for an interesting discussion:

So do you agree with this? I personally rank Parade as one of his best works and I don't agree about "the first five songs" sounding under-developed/rushed (ain't nothing wrong with Girls & Boys and UTCM) but I do think Prince's drumming sounds substandard on the first three tracks.

I also wish he'd included All My Dreams on the album and then it'd probably be my all time favourite Prince album despite my misgivings about the opening cuts.

[Edited 10/4/15 3:14am]

If I recall correctly he played the drum tracks to the first three songs all in one take, so that is, in my opinion as a non-drummer, quite impressive.

I like Parade much more today than I did when it came out but I remember that Prince was not very happy with Parade and thought he should´ve taken more time to come up with better songs.

So, even though we consider it a masterpiece, Prince himself might disagree about that, that ´s why I understand fans who think this album is overrated. I think it is a great album but if the artist himself didn´t like it that much, who can blame some fans for calling it overrated?

Most acclaimed artists are extremely self-critical and rarely satisfied with their outputs though.

it's a good album..won't say masterpiece though... UTCM needed a smooth guitar solo instead of a piano solo...Christopher Tracey's Parade is a stupid song...Do U lie? is a horrible song as well as Venus De Milo... you would of figured after all the great material he was recording at that time and those 2 clunkers got on the album...who knows?

Good taste is seldom innate, you have to be exposed to a lot of music, classical, ethnical, and good ol' rock'n'roll. It takes a lifetime.
Aside from opinions, there's musical culture.

So fuck democracy, fuck diplomacy.

You good sir, must listen to the entire Beatles catalog and know it by heart before you can deem CTP "stupid".

The piano solo in UTCM is a lesson in minimalism. All comes from the silence in between the chords played, not the chords themselves.

Do U Lie is a miracle which Skipper was clever enough not to rehash, in his whole career (and God knows it's a vast catalog). His best Macca impression.

And Venus de Milo, is a state of grace. Displace one phrase, there would be diminishment, as Milos Forman's Salieri would say. Prince and Clare were a match made in heaven.

Underdeveloped? That's like saying the studio version of 4 The Tears In Your Eyes lacks big fat snares and heavy metal guitars.

Parade is the ultimate musical crossover.
Special Thanks to Joni, Lisa and Wendy, and probably the whole Revolution to make Skipper want to be an european. Classical strings, accordions, voozaytraybell and all that jazz.

I mean, when he got tired of it, when he thought it was time to be a 100% american again, we got Graffiti Bridge and Tony Mosley. Ugh...

Luckily, Batman had him still a foot into Lovesexy.

This person did share their opinion. You can tell by the way he wrote some words based on his opinion and then posted them onto the thread. Did someone stop him? Did the fact that someone wrote some words that opposed his opinion in anyway make his opinion invalid? Did bonatoc physically prevent avasdad from speaking? Are two opposing opinions not allowed in the same thread? Youre still pissed off by the fact that not everyone agrees with your opinion, only this time you have disguised your outrage with a smiley in the hope that your comment slips by unnoticed, giving you the last word. Nice try.

I've noticed that nowadays when people with little education or insight in regard to a particular topic go and post utter nonsense online and someone tells them that it really wasn't necessary to share their unsighful nonsense with the rest of the world, everyone falls on that someone sayin' that under their right of freedom of speech, people are entitled to an opinion and to claim it out loud. Therefore the paradigm is now that uninformed/uneducated people having a right to polluting the interwho with nonsense is freedom of speech, and educated people objecting to their nonsense is not freedom of speech but censorship (even though as u point out censorship is banning a claim, not replying to it). Debate is therefore now considered censorship and we should immediately name the most uneducated people at the highest responsibilities in governments while we're at it.

I do not believe that everyone is "entitled" to an opinion. As someone whose scholar level in science is extremely low, I for example do not believe that I am entitled to an opinion regarding whether the String Theory makes sense or whether viruses are alive or not. I'll leave that to people with a background in physics and biology.

Besides, Avasdad didn't post an "opinion". An opinion would be to claim that one dislikes Venus De Milo and Do U Lie? even though one is aware of the brilliance of those songs. Everyone is entitled to having personal tastes, I'll give you that. Claiming that those songs are "horrikle clunkers" is an attempt at making an objective, absolute statement. It's intellectual cheat. All the more reason to fight it nod

some were acting like they are cool with other's having different opinions on this album yet this rejecting one's opinion response because he supposedly dosen't know his shit or hasn't listened to this album enough to understand it gets co signed.

Some of y'all kept proving my point this entire thread.

And you're clearly acting butthurt but pretending that you're not with this response after i mentioned that your claim that Parade the best album of all time is a hyperbole. It's one thing to say it's your favorite Prince album or you love it like others have and another to call it the greatest album of all time. If I said Parade is one of the worst albums I've ever heard, wouldn't that seem a bit funny and exagerated claim to you?

anyways I'm not going down that road having this endless debate again when It's pretty understandable what I'm talking about

How does Christopher Tracey's Parade feel underdeveloped?

When I first heard it, it sounded like an explosion of colors, there were sound coming from everywhere. What could actually be added to make it sound 'developed?
* remember it was developed to fit a piece in the film Under the Cherry Moon.
1.) Do you think it filled the spot well?

.

New Position: pulling from Carribean influences (Lisa and/or Wendy pulled this one out of the vault via 81) Wendy was skilled on the steel drums. Carribbean music of this vein tends to be more stripped. What could actually be added to make it sound 'developed?'
1.) Do U think it filled the spot in the movie well?
2.) I think having the band playing in the movie @ Mary Sharon's party would have definately made the movie much better

.

I Wonder U

I heard the piece before the strings and many other instruments were added. And I LOVE it, it's very raw and steamy. With all the added instruments, I love it even more, it feels like a whirlwind of desire, poetic, chic. And if it was longer I think it would have taken something away. It's shortness makes me want it more. I didn't like the added piece on the tour so much. I wish it would have been allowed to continue to build musically with some breathing and orgasm, maybe some electric guitar(like AnotherLover or the Flesh session cut:Up From Below) But what could have been done to make it fell 'developed'?
1.) Do you think it fit the scene in the movie?

.

Under the Cherry Moon
Perfectly stripped. You hear it in different parts of the movie including the opening intro(before An Honest Man) I love the sharp crispness of the song. Prince showing more of his piano over guitar skills.

1.) Do U think it fit the scene(s) in the movie?

Of course p thinks parade is bad .. Have u listened to hit n run? P has always had horrible taste ... Woulnt know a good song from a mcdonalds jingle .. Considering the massive input from the rev and claire p ego cant handle the parade praise either .. If p had better friends with good taste he would not release the garbage he does .. P used to have great tasting friends .. Now they all taste cheap and tacky ... Thats why his music reflects as much ... P really has no clue what is good or not and churns out music because HE CAN ... Parade is a classic to anyone who can think beyond dance beats and bling .. Opinions are for people who don't know what the hell they are talking about .. Nothing subjective about it .. If u cant dig a record that is considered by p fans AND critics to be one of the best records of all time than that is on u ... not parade

Underdeveloped suggests that the minimalism wasn't intentional. It's like calling "When Doves Cry" underdevloped due to its lack of bass. It's intentional; it's artistic.

Important point. It's not like WB said, "sorry Prince, you've spent your entire recording budget. Hand the tapes over to the mixing engineer and go home. We'll take it from here." lol

We all get the impression that Josh was the first external producer, but on Parade, there was Susan Rogers and 3 Davids, not to mention Clare.

W&L were responsible for having Skipper make huge stylistical shifts, and progress at an incredible rate (the bridge of Wonderful Ass is a nod to Dylan, anyone noticed?).

I think we must recognize what a collaborative result Parade is.

Skipper was probably pissing on Parade out of his skinny ass-ego, because he knew that this was truly a many women/men's effort.

Or simply playing Controversy with the media, as usual.

And of course he needed to persuade himself so he could go further. Being The Artist is a discipline, boys (and Girls).

I'm not sure Mary Lambert would have saved UTCM.

What would have been insanely great is having Scorcese directing it. Heck, he did Michael's Bad video.

Marty would have dropped in some drug traffic, Mary kidnapped for ransom, real hot steamy scenes (who the fuck has the idea to take his girl in the races sand and gravel, with a little horse shit here and there, except Good Ol' Skipper?), and entire hallucinated long clips, and I mean just the music, the WHOLE album versions, over narrative montages, intertwining a real screenplay.

A Romeo and Juliet musical for the 20th century, Love and Music against capitalism and greed, not the Luhrmann and Dicaprio shit.
