Those calling it the best album of all time, Prince's best album or a perfect album are those who make me think this album is very overrated around these parts.. How is this album the best of all of time when 99% of the planet don't even care about what's on it expect for Kiss. This is one of the very few places where this album will get all this adulation.. A perfect album?

when the music on it sounds old and dated?.. Time hasn't been kind to this album.. how is this a perfect album? I can't take all these hyperbole seriously..

As my buddy KCOOL would say rolleyes You put a lot of faith in the general public's opinions. The general public isn't and has never been the best gauge of the excellence of art. Also, you might want to tone down your own bullshit before accusing others of hyperbole. 99%! Old and dated! One of the very few places! [Edited 10/6/15 11:05am] [Edited 10/6/15 11:05am]

that's no hyperbole compared to calling it the best album of all time and it's true that time hasn't been too kind to this album..

No, that's not true. That's your opinion, which is no more or no less valid than the opinion of people saying they think Parade is the best album ever. In my opinion (see what I did there?) Parade has aged far, FAR better than almost any other Prince album from the 80s.

but that's no exageration compared to some things some fans have said in this thread about this album..

None of these statements qualify as exaggeration: "Parade is my favorite album." "Parade is the best album ever." "I think Parade is Prince's greatest album." Those are opinions. Exaggeration would be "Parade influenced so many other musicians that it's clearly Prince's most groundbreaking work."

Not at all. The first five songs work as a suite, and they might be my favourite stretch of songs on any Prince album. In my opinion, Parade is perfect from beginning to end.

I think you're confused. You brought exaggeration into it and accused Parade fans of exaggerating. Opinions are not exaggeration. You committed the cardinal but frequent sin of dismissing others' opinions as something other than opinions. There's no object measure of "best" album. Any statements about "best" album are by nature opinions. And as such, how can they be exaggeration? Exaggeration means you present something as greater or better or more or less than it truly is. There's no objective truth in statements about "best" albums. Perhaps they're hyperbole, but again your first post was full of hyperbole at the same time that you were acting like the Hyperbole Sheriff.

Look, you don't think Parade is as great as other people think it is. That's awesome. Like I said, all of our opinions are equally valid. But don't start acting like you possess some objective truth that others just can't grasp.

And you still haven't defended your ludicrous statement: "How is this album the best of all of time when 99% of the planet don't even care about what's on it expect for Kiss." How does that add up? Is Hootie and the Blowfish better than Parade?

as i said...

what i posted is no hyperbole compared to calling it the best album of all time.. that's really an over the top claim.. IF you don't see this that by now ...i don't know what to tell you..

and I'm not the one saying to shut down the thread right after someone posting a reoply praising the album.. Those with the positive comments have acted as if their opinion is the objective truth

yet your accusing me of this..

Also please present evidence supporting the notion that the percentage of the world's population familiar with more than one song on an album is correlated with that album's ranking on some objective list of "best" albums.

After trying to nail me with allegedly confusing hyperbole vs. opinion vs. exaggeration, you'd think you might be more cautious when using the word "fact." I'm not arguing that most of the world's population HAS heard more than Kiss on Parade. But you say it's a fact that they haven't. Well, support your fact. And like I said above, connect that fact to this discussion.

I don't consider mainstream popularity as a factor in "best" albums. Or best painting. Or best literature. Or best poetry. Or best sculpture. Or best of any art, to the extent "best" exists.

I'm fine with that..

But one last thing i'd like to add..

what bothered me the most in this thread is the musical elitism from some of the members in this thread. Look at my reply from the page.. i carefully added "in my opinion" to not come accross that way... But some members have acted like this is not up for discussion.. that this is a masterpiece and whatnot.. and those that don't agree don't know understand Prince.. yet I'm the one being accused of acting that way.. lol

Nonsense. What other people think about a piece of music should have no bearing on how it makes you feel. Unless you are a sheep of course.

I know it shouldn't... But some members using all sorts of hyperboles seemed to me like they were trying to shove their opinions down the throats of those who don't like it as much..

and I'll quote you "This album tops the pile for me. There is nothing better made by anyone, anywhere, ever. They should put this album on the next deep space probe (as a streaming service, one month free trial) so that those pesky aliens can see we are a race of pure artistic funkists."

I mean what else am i suppose to read into that?

As for the "popularity" argument.. it's valid to wonder how meaningful this album is outside of Prince hardcore fan territory if your gona claim that "there's nothing better made by anyone anywhere" ever...
