For those questioning the timing, have you not seen the Sandra Bland arrest video and story in the last day or so?

Yes, the Sandra Bland arrest video and her subsequent jailhouse suicide/homicide are disturbing and the release of this "Baltimore" video could be intentional 2 indicate that nothing has changed. This tragedy happened NW of Houston. So, perhaps Houston will get the next HitNRun Tour stop!

Eye wonder when is prince going to release the alternate version of "bAlTiMoRe", with the haunting, smoking guitar solo, that left everyone in tears?

Maybe he is saving it 4 his HOT, summer funk driven fourthcoming album...That will include the sizzling, blockbuster single "stare'....

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

The mayor in the video is disturbing.

Where's due process and innocent until proven guilty for the officers?

The other criminal in the van with freddy gray gave a video deposition saying that how dare the police put him in the same van as the crazy man bashing himself repeatedly against the interior wall of the van.

I'm looking forward to the reaction of that video when released during the trial.

The other criminal said he said nothing and the story that he did say something is total bull. The officers will get their day in court which Mr.Gray will never get his day in court. I also suggest that you and some other members of this board check out the news. The city is in total kaos with police allowing crime to continue unabated with the chief of police being fired a few weeks ago.

I liked this song before now with this video I love it. I teared up a little. I bet the ones questioning the relevance of the video's release now are probably not African-American. The song isn't just about what happened in Baltimore it's about what's happening in America daily.

My honey thinks this video is great and as for me, I think it hits the right notes in a poignant way.

The lyrics are perfect, the music is pure "Prince speaks musically in one of his well known idioms".

Together with the images, it all gels very nicely. The lyrics had to be this way or at least that was one of the sensible options: share your dismay, keep it simple for authenticity and immediacy.

It's too bad you don't see what's really happening, denial and deflection got us to Baltimore.

I see what's happening but I don't believe in criminals rights trumping the rights of average Jane and Joe.

I don't believe in putting criminal michael brown next to victims Treyvon or Tamir or murdered Walter Scott. The facts of Freddie Gray aren't in yet.

Bad cops aren't responsible for the epidemic of black on black crime or the majority of problems destroying the black community (drugs, absent fathers, education).

There's a disgusting amount of cops that shouldn't be cops... but burning down a city block or looting the stores of INNOCENT citizens is never the answer.

How can I sing along to Baltimore when it portrays a criminal as a victim?

If anyone can answer that one question... please!

My kids are too young to understand FOX News but they know not to sell drugs or commit strongarm robberies. Hopefully the song Baltimore will inspire enough people to change their ways

and if so then Prince will be proud. And now that the video is out even more addicts will put down the crack pipe and hold hands and work together to make their communities safer.

It will happen!

Amen, friend, agreed that every criminal deserves their day in court.

The crack pipe was mentioned because of Freddie's long history of drug sale convictions.

But it's all better now because Prince released the song and video of Baltimore and I'm telling you this video is going to be on repeat night and day.

-

I don't know if you believe in psychic abilities but I can FEEL the change already that Prince has brought about unpresidented change. During my nap, I had an out of body experience and can confirm that 3 gang bangers/pimps/drug dealers in Baltimore flushed their stash and turned their illegal firearms into local police and even F.B.I. I saw it happen in my vision!

And all because of the video of Baltimore.

Bless you, Prince, and all those that are making the change for our communities by tolerance, no more using or selling drugs, no stealing or robbing, getting off welfare and getting a job (even if it means you can't afford to buy multiple gold chains), having car insurance and a valid license, and respecting police authority but also reporting the illegal activities of police.

A change is gonna come.

-

What a happy day!

I'd like to thank those here at the Org that helped me see the broader vision and deeper meaning of Baltimore.

I'm holding hands with you all, spiritually, and at midnight let's all watch the video and it will be as if we're watching it together.

What a happy day!

I'm assuming that you're making an attempt at humor, but wow. If you really want people to listen to your argument, it might be a good idea not to talk about addicts putting down the crack pipe...and your rationalization for doing so is that Freddie Gray has a "long history of drug sale convictions"? What exactly does that have to do with you essentially accusing an entire race of being crack addicts?

I really hate shit like this. Not sure if you live in America or not, but if so, please open your eyes. The drug epidemic is far worse among Caucasians right now, where heroin is literally decimating communities. Yet I don't see anyone using that as an excuse for police brutality against whites.

If you watch the Sandra Bland dash cam and don't feel overwhelming disgust, then there's something seriously wrong. For a cop to feel justified in unlawfully ordering a black woman to extinguish her cigarette and then get out of the car or he will "light her up" (while holding the taser to her face in a threatening manner), and - even worse - for people to watch that and say "Well, she shouldn't have had that bad attitude".... it's so incredibly sickening.

I've got lots of problems, I'll be the first to admit that, but I don't understand where so many seemingly good people have such ugly, hateful attitudes. If that was your sister, how would you feel? Have you ever been pulled over by a cop for bullshit reasons? As a white guy, the only time that happened to me was in college when I was driving my car with 3 of my Indian friends to show them my suburban home....and this cop was beyond hateful. He said that "people like you come in to this neighborhood and think they can just smash and grab." His attitude was so repulsive and offensive, and on the one hand I'm glad I got to experience that, but on the other hand it makes me so sad for our country.

No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Sex is not love. Love is not sex. Putting words in other people's mouths will only get you elected.

Another childish and ignorant response. You have nothing of any substance to add to this post. Apparently your definition of a talking point is an opinion that differs from yours. You should spend a few days in the heart of a poor black community and tell me who is wreaking havoc on the black community. It won't be the police for sure. There is a false narrative being sold to the public by activists and some media which says that young black men are victims of society and of the powers that be. Being black myself and growing up in a black community, I know this is the farthest thing from the truth. Black men are not victims and portraying us as such is racist. It implies that we are incapable of being responsible for ourselves and our families like any other race of men. If you don't use hard drugs, sell drugs, commit crime, have out of wedlock births, or drop out of school you can have a damn good life in the United States. I've been stopped by the police a few times for traffic violations. A couple have been jerks, but most were just doing their jobs. However, even with the jerks I've encountered, none have beaten me, shot me, or violated my civil rights. The reason why is because I complied. I didn't run, fight with the officer, argue with them, or have a gun on my person or in my car. If I didn't agree with my citation I took up the issue in court. By they way, Prince, a millionaire and a success, should know better with the life he's gotten to live since he was 17 years old.

I wouldn't say that, it's just that Baltimore (the song) has been discussed a great deal and the video, while well done and fitting, isn't visually ambitious and doesn't feature Prince much or at all.

I don't see how showing a visualization of a broken system and exposing police brutality, and people protesting against it, would be an issue. The images in the video are similar to the protests against police brutality of the 1960s. Which is sad that the same type protests aganst that particular, societal ill, is still going on more than 50 years later. Looks like America hasn't got that far in improving that. We all just can't sit in silence when these social injustices happen. Who will speak for those victimized by a broken system or when those in positions of authority, take advantage of citizens in communities like Baltimore, in an abusive manner? The vid doesn't make excuses for any criminals who choose to take part in criminal activity, nor will it stop crime in the U.S., but when you have bad cops acting like criminals, how is that acceptable? That vid represents that particular, societal ill, and there are many Baltimores in the U.S., as the message in the vid represents an ugly reality, that has been going on for years.

Let us remember and acknowledge that most Blacks who commit crimes are arrested or imprisoned, but over the past 40 plus years, how many bad cops went to jail for murdering unarmed Black males? I bet it's less than all the fingers on our hands. The vid pretty much represents and exposes an ugly truth, that may be uncomfortable for many. But, if some feel uncomfortable with the content that the video presents, then the vid has served its purpose, by successfully tapping into the conscience of its viewers and exposing the harsh realities of police abuse on a community.

I have to say they did a good job with this video. Well done. That's all I will say about it so the thread won't get moved moved to P&R.

Actually what is responsible for a broken community, is a broken system, a failed system. Elected officials failing to fufill the interests and concerns of the communities they represent. Lack of employment and job training, no companies investing in poor communities, lack of decent housing, poverty, insufficient educational and career resources and opportunities, abandoned buildings and homes, and companies leaving the communities and taking the jobs with them.

What do you get with that? People searching for means of survival. This is not making excuses or saying anyone should result to criminal activity to survive, but many do out of desperation. Then you have some bad police going into many of those communities and abusing their authority.

Have you ever visited a poor, white or even a poor, Native American rural community? There are many that exists in this country. Their ills are not displayed or as visible by the media, on the same level the media displays the ills of poor, Black communities, but they have similar, societal issues with drugs, crime, lack of employment and lack of other resources, needed to empower their economic situations or to improve their communities' ills. Broken/failed systems are a contributing factor to a broken community. Question and main concern should be how do you fix it?

So let's not act like specific, societal ills are isolated to one community based on race or fall for the myth of absent Black fathers, being the main reason, behind youth crime as that in and of itself would be a lie. (see this link that debunks that myth; a little research always helps http://m.dailykos.com/sto...ked-by-CDC. Sadly, some people tend to use crime statistics, of specific communities to hide behind their personal prejudices and ignorance. The vid exposes an ugly reality many may be uncomfortable with, so it is not unusual if some react in a negative way towards the contents of the video.
